Sophia’s POV
What the heck? What did that mean? I was so confused.
Jerry turned a splotchy red at Reid Prescott’s words and I could see his hands form fists at his side.
I glanced between the two men. There was definitely bad history between them. I wondered what had caused it and how important it was that despite the fact that I had married both men, neither of them had discussed it ever.
“Did you really marry her?” Jerry spat out finally, his face scrunched up in a mix of disgust and annoyance.
At this point, I’d had it. It was one thing for Jerry to argue with Mr Prescott and a different thing entirely for him to act like I wasn’t even in the room as he spoke to Mr Prescott about me.
Gone were the days that I would let Jerry walk all over me just so he could feel better about himself.
“I am right here,” I said, folding my arms. “If you want to ask me a question, do it. Stop talking about me like I’m not here.”
Jerry’s gaze left Reid Prescott and focused on me for the first time since he had walked up to us.
There was so much emotion in Jerry’s eyes as he stared at me that I could barely decipher what they meant.
Then his gaze flattened out to the arrogant look I was more familiar with.
“Showing your true colors after five years of pretense must feel good.” Jerry said snidely.
“What?” I was dumbfounded by Jerry’s sheer audacity. How dare he talk to me about pretense when he was the king of lies and deception?
Now more than ever I really hoped this child wasn’t his.
But Jerry wasn’t close to done with his insults.
He sneered at me speaking derisively.
“You made a scene about me paying you for our night together but you had no problem jumping in bed with my half-brother the first chance you got.”
My jaw nearly dropped in shock. Half Brother? What did he mean by that? I looked at Reid Prescott. Was he truly Jerry’s half-brother?
Mr Prescott’s jaw clenched and unclenched and for the first time that night I saw something other than snide indifference. He was angry.
He moved, coming between Jerry and me, gently pushing me so I was directly behind him as he faced down Jerry.
“Say one more word to my wife and I’ll rearrange your face.” Mr Prescott said gruffly and in the background, the press began to take a flurry of pictures that I knew would end up in the front of every newspaper and tabloid tomorrow.
Staring at Reid Prescott’s angry face, even I almost believed our lie.
Jerry took a step towards Mr Prescott and for a moment, I was certain they would come to blows right there in front of everyone.
The next second, Anastasia Baxter appeared at Jerry’s side taking his arm cautiously with a polite but obviously fake smile at Mr Prescott and me.
“Jerry, the board will like a word.” She said succinctly in an obvious attempt to stop the confrontation.
Jerry didn’t even look at her as he responded.
“I’m busy.”
Anastasia tugged hard on his arm forcing him to meet her gaze.
“I’m sure Mr Prescott can wait, son. This is urgent.”
I saw the moment Jerry looked beyond his mother and realized we had become the center of attraction.
He slanted one last glare at Reid Prescott and me before leaving with Anastasia.
As he walked away, I heaved a sigh of relief, my adrenaline fading, reality kicking in brutally as I stared at Reid Prescott.
I had been played once more. And by another Baxter at that.
Reid Prescott hadn’t denied Jerry’s claim that they were half brothers. Mr Prescott’s marriage to me was another underhanded Baxter scheme and I had fallen for it.
I shouldn’t have married him without finding out his motives. How could I make the same mistake twice?
Mr Prescott took my arm.
“Are you alright?” He asked with a concerned look on his face but I was already sick of this pretense.
I pulled my arm out of his grasp.
“I want to go home.” I told him.
Mr Prescott seemed like he wanted to argue but at the last second, he simply nodded and offered me his arm.
“Fine, let’s go.”
I didn’t take his arm, I simply walked and after a moment, he followed me.
The drive back to his house was quiet and in my mind, I already knew what my decision was.
The car pulled to a stop in front of the mansion.
I turned to face him.
“I want to dissolve this contract, Mr Prescott.”
