Soon after arriving at the airport, they were all on direct flights to Hong Kong, where they would sleep for the night before catching a flight to Paris at 4am.
Carl and two colleagues of the company sat together on the plane without talking. Carl was not familiar with them, and they did not know Carl very well, so they both thought about their own affairs. Fortunately, they arrived in Hong Kong soon.
After off the plane, a line of people at the airport directly called the taxi go directly to hotel already booked. There were seven people including four women and three men. Linda reserved Emma a single suite, the rest four standard double rooms. And she reserved a single room for Carl because he’s assistant, and she deliberately gave Carl’s face.
Because it was the plane at 4 o’clock the next morning, everyone didn’t go out and went to bed early. At 3 o’clock in the morning, Linda began to call everyone to get up and then went to the airport by taxi as scheduled. After going through complicated security procedures, the group boarded a plane bound for Paris.
“Is this your first time abroad?” Sitting beside Carl, Emma asked Carl, but did not get an answer.
“If you have time when you are in France, you can have a good look at it. France is a romantic country with a long history. It should be worth seeing.” Emma said to him.
Carl nodded and said, “Good.”
“Are you worried about Frost?” Emma looked back at Carl and then asked.
“A little.”
Emma nodded and then said, “In fact, I don’t know how to comfort you, but I believe that good people will have a good return. Frost is a very kind and lovely girl, I believe that God will surely care for her, maybe, after you come back from France, she has recovered. Perhaps I shouldn’t have called you to France at this hour at all. You should have been by her side at this time, and with you by her side she would have recovered more quickly.”
Carl shook his head, and then said, “No, I have my job, everyone has everyone’s mission and responsibility. She is my sister, I have the responsibility and obligation to take care of her and even raise her, but, I take your salary to save her life, I have the obligation to protect you.”
“The fight in business is sometimes just as desperate and reckless, and it’s more secretive than war. Your father is a wise man. There must be some reason why he hired me to protect you. Besides, why hadn’t he hired a bodyguard for you when you were a child? You have to trust him, and I have to trust him. Wherever you are I must be by your side to protect you, you and I need to be careful in case of any accidents.”
“As for Frost, my dad told me since I was a child, whether men or women, one of the most important is to be brave and strong. Only when you are brave and strong, you are the master of life. That’s what my father taught me, and I also taught Frost in that way. I believe that she is a strong girl, no matter whether I was beside her or not, she can be strong to get through this difficulty. After all, I can’t be there for her all my life. She has to live her own life, and nobody can help her.”
Emma went into meditation after hearing that, and the nodded, “In fact, the story between you and your sister moved me. A brother like you is rarely to be seed.”
“Everyone has different values. Some people like money, some people like fame, some people pursue freedom, but I’m a sentimental person. One of my leaders once said to me that caring emotion is probably the most fatal wound in my life. He said that if I die one day, it must be because of emotion. It could be that.” Carl thought of the talk with his former superior, and then smiled in a self-deprecating way.
“Dead? What was he talking about? Caring emotion is good, it will not kill a person. Without emotion, it is just a body. It’s just like a machine.” Emma was aggrieved at the words of Carl’s former leader.
“Sometimes a man does need to be turned into a machine. It will be a long time before we get to Paris. Have a sleep.” Carl stopped Emma’s words and then said.
Emma nodded, closed her eyes, and then turned to Carl and said, “I forgot to ask you, have your wound on hand get well? I have never formally apologized to you.”
“It’s all right, there’s nothing to apologize for. I tied you up, you bit me, we’re all even. I didn’t say sorry to you, you don’t need to apologize to me.” Carl lightly said.
Emma nodded, and then said, “I temporarily can’t sleep. Can you talk to me? It will be a long journey if we don’t talk.”
“Sure.” Carl asked lightly with his eyes closed.
“In fact, after listening to the story between you and Frost, I have too many feelings. You may not know, I did not fall asleep the night before yesterday, since I kept thinking the dialogue between you and Frost. It’s hard for me to imagine what your life was like when you were growing up, and I’ve reflected on myself, and I think I’ve been too ungrateful.”
“In common with you, my mother died of cancer when I was twelve, however, the difference is, my life was superior since the childhood, and we never worry about money. Since my mother died, my father was obedient to me, but I was still not satisfied. I hated my dad, I attributed my mother’s death to my dad, so, I had been very rebellious, not obedient, but he obeyed me. For many times I saw him quietly sitting in a room with a photo of my mother in hand, crying.”
“When I was seventeen, he brought home a woman and told me to call her Auntie. I knew he wanted to marry her, and she was very nice to me. As soon as she left, I put a knife to my neck, and I told him that if he married that woman, if he would be sorry to my mother, and I would die right in front of him. Since then, he has never had a relationship with any woman.”
“For so many years, he has been single. Sometimes he looked very lonely. Later I became sensible, and knew that was not the case. I advised him to marry a new wife two years ago, but he just sighed and smiled, and said he was satisfied to have me. I have done so many things to make my father sad. Frost said you ruined your life because of her. I think my father ruined his life because of me, too.” Emma said with a sigh.
