“Well, thank you. I will bear the fare for you to come and go every day. According to the contract between you and my father, you don’t need to pay this transportation expense. Now you have this extra expense for me, so it should be borne by me.” Emma thought for a while and then said.
“No, you can go back.” Carl said with light tone, and then added, “I watch you go in. Switch the light three times after you go in the living room, so that I can be sure you are safe.”
“Ok.” Emma nodded, and then went in, took out the key to open the door, and did as Carl said. Later she heard the sound of the iron door closed. The iron door just needed to he shut with the latch.
Emma came to her bedroom on the second floor, put the bag down, pulled open the curtain to see the yard. Under the dim light, Carl has disappeared, and, the iron door was closed outside. Emma smiled and then soliloquized, “I did not expect such a stubborn person also has a kind side.”
Then, Emma went into the bathroom to take a bath, turned off the light to sleep after watching a while of the TV and the network.
3 o’clock in the morning, Emma suddenly woke up, and then used the bathroom. After washing hands, she was about to sleep. Emma suddenly pulled open the curtains regularly to see the situation in the yard. She was to check around to see whether they are safe since she lived alone and she was lack of a sense of security.
The yard was quiet, everything had no change, and the iron gate was closed. When Emma was about to go back to sleep, she suddenly feel something wrong. Someone was laying in the bench in the small garden pavilion, and this person was Carl.
Emma could not believe that Carl did not go back but just sleep in the pavilion. Emma was moved in the heart, but also was angry, because Carl was too stuffy. She cannot believe that there should be such a stubborn person in the world. Without a coat, she went downstairs in her pyjamas, opened the door and ran out.
Carl was sleeping soundly. When he heard a sound of footsteps, he immediately opened his eyes. Hearing the sound coming from the direction of the house, and obviously the sound of slippers, he understood what was going on. He sat up, took a cigarette from his pocket and lit it.
Emma angrily ran out to wake up Carl. When she ran to the small garden only to find Carl had woken up, and was sitting there smoking a cigarette looking at her.
“Good morning.” Carl nodded and faintly said hello to her.
“Good morning? Look at the time. Carl, what are you going? Didn’t you promise me you wouldn’t be here tonight? Then what are you doing?” Emma’s cheeks were bulging.
“I only promise you that I will never set foot in your house. This is not a house.” Carl said after spitting a cigarette.
Smelling the suffocated smoke smell, Emma immediately coughed up, roared to Carl, “you cannot smoke. It the most basic courtesy and respect that you don’t smoke in front of a woman.”
“I’m sorry.” Carl lightly said, then got up, walked away a few steps, leaning on the pillar of the pavilion, and then said, “You run out so late is to tell me not to smoke in front of you? Now I know it, I won’t smoke around you, and you can go back to sleep.”
“What? Carl, I really don’t know what’s going on in your mind, or do you have a problem? Regardless of whether you feel comfortable sleeping on this slate, it is not winter, but the temperature is not high, aren’t you afraid of being cold for sleeping here for a whole night? What if something goes wrong with you? Why are you doing this to yourself?”
“I know you promised to my father and you signed a contract with him, that you would be by my side twenty-four hours a day, but didn’t I already say that the security here is very good? I have several doors, moreover, there are monitors anywhere, so as long as I stay at home in the evenings, it is impossible to have any accident. You can go back to sleep well, or come early tomorrow morning if you don’t feel relieved. Why not sleep on comfortable bed but here? Can you be agile?” Emma angrily said. Feeling a little cold, she naturally embraced her arms.
“Well, I see. Go home. If you really want to go on talking to me about this subject, put on some clothes.” Carl looked at Emma, said slowly.
“That’s my business, Carl. You hurry back to bed, Ok? Do you have to drive me mad?” Seeing Carl’s completely indifferent attitude, Emma was angry.
“Thank you for your concern, but it is not necessary to be angry. I’m telling you my reasons. First, your father has told you I was once a soldier. For a soldier, commitment and responsibility are more important than my own life. And it is my commitment and responsibility to protect you for 24 hours. Although you said I am pedantic and inflexible, that is my principle.”
“Second, sleeping here is as good as sleeping in a bed for me. I was once stuck in a marsh for a month without moving, except to eat biscuits and nourishing liquid, so I got used to sleeping in the open.”
“Third, I agree with you that it is not suitable to live in the same room with a girl. It is neither convenient for you nor for me. Therefore, it is better to live here than in it. That is my answer. That’s all I have to say, whether you agree or disagree. You can go back to sleep.” Carl said lightly.
