Unhappily An Hybrid

Jack’s POV
My eyes snap open as I turn to the clock. It’s exactly 5am. I’ve been waking up by that time, of recent. I look right beside me and Jake’s still sound asleep. I am about to ask myself what’s going on when I notice a frame on the wall. It’s a picture of a werewolf and I can see another one right on the adjacent walls.
“I am a werewolf!” I scream happily as I wake Jake up to play some music to celebrate my new life.
He wakes up but frowns and returns to bed. I slowly creep out of the room, creaking the door open as Alex bumps into me. Do I now have a scent?
“I can now track your location.” He says, answering my unasked question.
“That’s great! Where’s mum? Does she know? Is she fine?” I ask.
“You didn’t ask after your brother, Jake.” He says, a tone of disappointment evident in his voice.
“What happened to Jake?” I slowly ask, as I suspect something indeed went wrong with his werewolf. He doesn’t respond on time, which prompts me to ask the question again.
“Didn’t he transform under the full moon?” I ask.
“He did,” he replies, “but his wolf is just a different one. I think your brother is more of a werewolf.”
“Really?” I ask as I bulge my eyes, “tell me more.”
“Definitely,” he says, “do we say it here or walk to the field?”
“So many girls are doing to distract me from listening to you carefully.” I respond.
“Jake is a hybrid of a vampire and a werewolf. I’m afraid the pack will have to ban him if his mate is eventually a vampire. I need you to give me your word that you won’t tell him this.” He says as my heart beats faster.
“Sure, I will not,” I whisper as I ask out of fear, “am I a hybrid as well? I’m afraid that I’m one as well.”
“You’re not, luckily. But you’re yet to find your mate.”
“That can take a month. Don’t pressure me.”
“Are you trying to place yourself under a curse? Don’t you want to resume college? You know you’re qualified now.” He says.
“That’s true. I want to resume college. What if my mate is in the college?” I ask excitedly.
“That can’t be. I’ve prayed to the moon goddess to make sure your mate is nearby.” He says.
“That’s not necessary. I’d even prefer it that way. Do you know I can reject my wolf if she doesn’t meet my standards?” I say.
“That’ll weaken the wolf bond between you two. It’ll discourage the moon goddess.” He says.
“Am I going to the next Alpha for this pack or you’re not willing to get down from the post? You’re growing old already. You should be in your forties while mum should be Forty on dot.” I say.
“Don’t calculate our ages,” he says and chuckles, “I’ve got a fucking college and there are several wolf packs there. Once you get there, you’ll mingle with them and find your way to be the Alpha.”
“It’s better that way. But once I can’t do that successfully, you’d have it done for me.” I say and he approves of it as we both get in to wake Jake up.
He’s facing a mirror, staring at his teeth. I think he’s grown fangs as well as it’s high time I separate from him. He’ll hate me moving forward for being the kid to qualify to be an Alpha because according to the moon goddess, no hybrid is allowed to reign as an Alpha. Only a pure werewolf breed can.
“No! This isn’t happening. Have I turned to someone running Helter skelter to find blood for survival?!” He wails as he says.
Dad moves closer to him, hugging him from behind, “it’s not that way. You’re only an hybrid and won’t be so vicious as other vampires. You won’t be as active as other wolves as well. Just fifty fifty, do you understand? You’re a special being.”
“Don’t tell me that. I’m nothing but an outcast!!” He screams as he dashes blows at the mirror so that it shatters and he gets bruised by it. I suddenly get that tip as dad leaves him to himself. He’s sighted blood and would want to suck it.
He slowly cries out as he asks, his lips shivering, “am I going to suck this blood? Am I a vampire?! Why? Why did I become one? Why are you running away from me?”
“It’s not what you think, Jake. We’ve got you. Dad and I. Nora and Amanda.” I slowly say as I gesticulate the message further to him.
“I don’t want to be a vampire! Fuck the moon goddess!!” He cries out as the door flings open, Nora and Amanda marching in with the pack doctor. Alex and I quickly rise to our feet to attend to them.
“What can we help you with?” I ask as Alex unintentionally slaps me on the chin, but adds this intentionally, “stay quiet. It’s Jake’s test result.”
“The result has shown that Jake has a larger wolf in him and he’s got a vampire self right before the large werewolf.” The pack doctor says as Nora pulls Jake into a hug.
“Mum, I’m a vampire.” He says and slowly sobs while she runs her hands through his hair, responding, “no, you’re not, you’re very special.”
“I don’t want to hear that again.” He fumes and pulls out of the hug aggressively.
“Jake won’t be aggressive as you all think. He’s only got the vampire as a companion. It’s more of a defense when his wolf turns out to be weak. Though it’s not our best choice to inform him about this at an early age, we also feel making him aware of the situation is paramount to avoid getting out there and biting people unnecessarily.” He says.
Jack lifts his hands on his head as he wails, asking, “does this mean I need to seek blood before I maintain my vampire self?”
“Actually, a leader who’s an hybrid can explain this best. But I’ll say most times, you don’t need blood. Only when you know you’re gonna employ your vampire self soon, then take some blood to activate it.” He says.
“I’ll drink human blood to survive. What a crooked world.” He says as he bursts into tears. Nora pulls him into a tight hug as the scene is too emotional to watch.
“I love you, brother.” I pull him into a hug after Nora detaches from him. I ask all of them to get out of the room as I want to speak with him one-on-one.
