Edward: Voice note [Don’t forget to eat. Rest well after dinner.]
Edward: [Sweet dreams, my love]
Edward: [Morning. Have you had breakfast? I just finished showering and getting ready for the meeting. I hope everything goes smoothly. If you’re going to work today, please be careful. Don’t forget to wear a thick coat to avoid catching a cold.]
Edward: [I just finished today’s meeting. How are you there? Are you doing alright?]
Edward: Sends a photo of the night view in Turkey [It’s a shame you couldn’t come. I swear, this place is perfect for a honeymoon]
Chloe looked annoyed at the series of messages Edward had sent her over the past two days. He acted as if he loved his wife so much, providing updates at all times as if Chloe would die if she didn’t know every second of his whereabouts.
Fed up, Chloe grabbed her phone, searched for her husband’s contact, and dialed immediately. It only rang twice before Edward answered the call.
“Darling…” Edward greeted from far away. “Do you miss me?”
“Edward! Please stop sending me short messages. I don’t care about all your activities.”
Edward was not offended in the slightest. Instead, he chuckled.
“But isn’t this what women love the most? How their partners always keep them informed when they’re apart?”
Sitting in her seat, Chloe sighed irritably. “That applies to normal couples! Not to us. So, I beg you, stop bothering me with all your short messages. I’m really sick of it!”
“But, Chloe–”
“I beg you, stop!” Chloe pleaded earnestly.
There was a moment of silence. Then Edward spoke again.
“Alright. I won’t bother you anymore.”
His voice sounded heavy, as if there was a hint of annoyance.
“It’s getting late, you should rest. I hope you have sweet dreams tonight.”
From behind the phone, Chloe could clearly feel how the usually mischievous tone in Edward’s voice now turned cold. It was somewhat awkward, but it was what Chloe wanted.
The next day, Edward proved what he said last night. There were no more short messages, voice notes, or phone calls that were usually addressed to his wife. Even when night came, he no longer sent goodnight wishes or anything of the sort.
Chloe should have been happy. She no longer felt disturbed by all the small talk messages Edward had been sending for the past few days.
However, the next day, Chloe felt strange. It was as if something was missing or lacking in her life.
Samuel, who was in Chloe’s office at the time, sensed her restlessness. He dared to speak up and directly asked why his boss was acting strangely that day.
“Ma’am, what’s wrong? I’ve noticed you’ve checked your phone more than six times. Who are you waiting for a call from?”
Chloe didn’t know how to respond to Samuel’s question. But she still answered.
“I’m just making sure if Edward sent any messages or not. It’s weird, he hasn’t contacted me for two days.”
“Didn’t you ask him to stop asking about your well-being or giving updates while he’s overseas?” Samuel explained. “Or could it be that you’re missing Mr. Edward?”
Chloe’s eyes widened. “What are you talking about! Why should I miss him?”
“Because he’s your husband, Ma’am.” Samuel immediately retorted with the words that just came out of Chloe’s mouth. “Besides, it’s normal to miss your own husband.”
“Ugh,” Chloe was ready to protest, but instead of replying, she changed the subject. “Now, back to your workspace, Sam. Finish the tasks I just assigned to you.”
After Samuel went back to his office, Chloe checked her phone again, intending to call Edward. But before the call went through, she changed her mind again.
“Hold on, Chloe, hold on. Don’t let yourself lose to Edward. Remember! He’s not serious. He’s intentionally toying with your feelings.”
Chloe repeated that sentence over and over, trying to convince herself not to be carried away by her emotions, which could hurt herself in the end.
