Dorothy’s eyes ached. Then, she saw a nurse push a bed out. The man lying on it was covered with a white quilt, only his pale and frosty face could be seen. His eyes were closed, and his chest slowly moved up and down. There was no other movement from him.
Jonathan was the first to react. He rushed to the bedside and shouted at the stern-faced man, “Credence, what the f*ck are you doing? Wake up, open your eyes, look at me, look at Dorothy. Oh, your father-in-law is here too!”
Yezoo was also very excited. With a happy smile on his face, he said, “Well, well, well. After waiting for such a long time, Credence has finally come out from the operating room. I believe he’s fine now.”
Dorothy wasn’t as excited as the two of them. She stood up dazed and looked tenderly at Credence who was unconscious on the bed. Her heart ached with unbearable pain. She looked at the white-haired doctor who was walking towards them. When she saw how serious he looked, her heart jumped. She stiffly asked, “Excuse me, was his operation a success?”
Under normal circumstances, if the operation went smoothly, the neurologists would be full of relief and joy when they stepped out.
But now, none of them looked very happy. Instead, each of them had a very serious look on their faces.
What did this mean? It means Credence’s operation didn’t go as well as they had hoped.
The senior doctor asked, “Are you Mrs. Scott?”
He looked at the dejected young woman standing in front of him and noticed her bulging belly. In an instant, his eyes flashed with pity. “Mr. Scott’s brain nerves and blood clots have been cleared away. In terms of surgery, it was very successful. However, his brain is in a perpetual state of deep sleep. In other words, he is in a coma, and has become a vegetable.”
“Of course, please don’t worry, we need to monitor his condition for the next 24 hours. If he wakes up within that time, it means the operation was a complete success.”
When it came to Credence’s physical condition, Dorothy didn’t take it lightly. She opened her eyes wide and listened carefully to the senior doctor’s explanation. When she heard that there were still 24 hours of observation to go, her face turned pale and her body kept trembling. Even the child in her womb was getting restless and started kicking about.
Her child was kicking her, but she didn’t feel any pain.
Perhaps, it was because her heart had long turned numb from the pain.
Dorothy suddenly felt like the blood vessels in her throat had exploded, she could taste blood in her mouth and throat.
She closed her eyes and slowly opened them again. She choked from sobbing as she tried to calm herself down. Then, she tightly clenched her fists.
She told herself that it didn’t matter. There would be a chance for her to wake him up, right?
Faith could move mountains.
As long as she believed, she would be able to wake up.
She needed to do this, she had to!
But…
When Jonathan heard the senior doctor’s explanation, he rushed over and asked Dorothy to go with him to wake Credence up. Seeing her crying silently, he was at a loss and comforted her, “Dorothy, what’s wrong? You shouldn’t be crying. Credence’s operation was a success, you heard him right? He won’t be a vegetable. That’s not possible. You have no idea how much Credence loves you. How could he let himself stay this way and let you be taken care of and protected by other men?”
Dorothy was biting her lips, and her pale face immediately turned red. She shouted back, “Mr. Stanton, what are you even saying?”
Jonathan didn’t dare to make any jokes right now. He smiled at Dorothy. “Dorothy, I didn’t mean to sound offensive. I mean, we won’t know for sure, there’s a chance, until the very end. Especially with Credence, he always pulls miracles of some kind. I believe that this time, he’ll hold on, and he’ll come back to us. So long as he’s still breathing, right?”
“Yes, you are right. So long as he’s still breathing.”
Dorothy closed her eyes, blinked her tears away, and whispered this with her trembling lips. She smiled at Yezoo, who pushed his wheelchair towards her. The chair creaked as it moved, echoing out in the deadly quiet corridor.
Yezoo could see that she was pretending to be strong. He gripped the wheels in his hands tightly and said, “Dorothy, I believe in Credence. He will wake up because he won’t leave Belle, the child in your womb, and you. I know the feeling, I can tell you with complete confidence, Credence loves you!”
That’s right, everyone could see how much Credence loved her. She was the only one who was wallowing in grief right now. She didn’t know if she should start anew and be with him again.
If they didn’t hesitate so much with each other, then perhaps, the both of them wouldn’t be like this right now.
Dorothy lowered her head and looked at Yezoo. He spoke hoarsely, “Dad, thank you. I believe he will definitely wake up, he would never leave me and our child.”
She raised her hands to wipe the tears on her cheeks. She went to the back of the bed, placed her hand on the railing, and slowly pushed the bed forward with the nurse.
Jonathan raised his eyebrows and sighed emotionally.
He pondered about it and realized that Dorothy must have figured something out. His face suddenly lit up and went to push Credence to the ward as well.
Perhaps, it wasn’t all that bad for Credence after all.
…
Dorothy followed the nurses as they pushed Credence into the ward, followed by Jonathan and Yezoo. They followed closely and did not let go of the railing.
As for Marvin, he had just been given another new mission and took the earliest flight to Jenciga at five o’clock the previous morning.
Jonathan was the only one left to handle all of Credence’s affairs. He hadn’t slept for three whole nights. He had been so very busy with everything, he was so tired he could collapse at any moment.
He had managed to push himself into the ward. He leaned feebly against the wall beside the bed and nodded politely at Yezoo then yawned, “Mr. Sherman, if there is no need for me to be here for the time being, then I’ll head back to the office for a quick nap. If you need anything, just call me.”
Yezoo nodded and motioned for him to get some rest. He pushed the wheelchair towards Dorothy and sighed, “Dorothy, I had planned to hold a grand banquet for you after you returned from Kowloon City. But now, Credence is in such a state, I don’t think you’d be in the mood. I think that we should wait until Credence has recovered before we talk about this again. What do you think?”
As he spoke, his gaze landed on Dorothy’s pale face. Yezoo was saddened that his place in Dorothy’s heart had been taken over by Credence.
“Dad, I think we’d better forget about it. I don’t want to overcomplicate things.”
Dorothy clenched her fists so hard that it hurt. She frowned and said, “It doesn’t matter if we hold a banquet or not, I will always be your daughter. We are related by blood, and that will never change.”
“Alright, I’ll do as you say.”
Yezoo stared at her in silence for a long time. Seeing that her attention was focused on Credence, he sighed silently and turned the wheelchair around, and silently left.
