Juelz was shocked at Marvin’s solemn face. When he came back to his senses, he sneered, “When did it happen? That was such a long time ago. I was only maybe seven or eight years old. I occasionally spotted this in my father’s office. Why, do you think my father is the man behind Melanie’s organization? Are you stupid or just naïve? Don’t forget, my parents died in a car accident when I was twelve years old. I heard that Jeremy was the one behind it, but it’s hard to find the truth about anything, so who knows?”
“All in all, my father has been dead for a very long time. It is impossible for him to be a drug dealer in Jenciga.”
Every single word from him was filled with mockery and sarcasm.
Marvin didn’t care for Juelz’s sarcasm.
This was no big deal to him. After all, he had been on countless anti-drug missions, all year round and has witnessed several people meet their bloody ends. He didn’t care whether he won or lost in a verbal discussion.
In life, apart from death, everything else wasn’t a big deal.
Marvin smiled indifferently and didn’t say anything else. However, after Juelz finished speaking, his worried eyes fell back towards the doors to the operating room that Dorothy was in. He couldn’t stand it anymore. He said, “Juelz, you care so much about Dorothy. Do you see her as your cousin, or another woman to chase after? Remember your place and position, so that you won’t be a bother to others.”
After that, regardless of whether Juelz understood him or not, Marvin turned around and left. He went to the second floor to look for a doctor he knew to wrap up the wounds on his body.
Darn it, he couldn’t even figure out his own feelings.
“Mr. Jules, what do you mean by that?”
Juelz’s expressions changed dramatically, as though something had crushed his foot. He shouted this angrily. He then turned around, only to see Marvin walking into the elevator.
However, this was all futile and pointless. Feeling powerless, Juelz kicked the wall and cursed to himself, “F*ck.”
No one knew what exactly Marvin said that aggravated Juelz so badly. After he kicked the wall, he leaned back against it and remained quiet.
Fearful of being implicated for his anger, Jonathan quietly took two steps to the side. He continued standing at the closed doors of the operating room and waited anxiously, his heart sank. “Argh Juelz, what do you think love is? Melanie risked her life for a man she could never get. What about Credence? He escaped death several times before, but this time, I don’t know if he’ll survive… When I first entered the operating room, the doctor told me that he not only suffered a stab to his heart but had multiple stab wounds on his body, and the nerves in his brain were aggravated again. He had undergone two brain nerve surgeries previously, which makes this the third time. It’s very likely he won’t survive. He might not leave the operating table alive. F**k!”
Jonathan sighed as his eyes darkened. “I don’t have any good news about Dorothy, ah, your cousin. She’s weak, badly injured, and almost lost the baby. Who knows if the baby will survive. All we can do is hope for the best!”
Juelz simply stood there. Jonathan wasn’t sure if he heard him. Juelz didn’t want to respond. He was overwhelmed. He simply stared quietly at the doors of the operating room, there wasn’t any sound coming from inside the rooms.
After waiting for a long time, Jonathan didn’t wait any longer for his reply and went to a corner in the corridor, in disappointment. He reached into his pockets and took out a cigarette case and a lighter. He prepared to light a cigarette to relieve his boredom. Then, he heard Juelz’s half-dead sneer behind him. “Mr. Stanton, you’re a man in your thirties, but you haven’t had a taste of love before. What a pity! Come on, today I’ll be a kind man. Let me tell you what love is.”
“Love is a feeling that makes your heart, eyes, and every cell in your body go numb even though there are countless beautiful women around you. You will be greatly annoyed by it.”
“There will only ever be one woman who can make your eyes sparkle. Just one sentence from her will make you happy for the rest of the day. You might even stay happy for half a month.”
“You will want to devote your life and everything you have to that woman!”
Jonathan was flustered for a moment, he didn’t expect Juelz to give such a response. When he came back to his senses, he sighed, “Juelz, after listening to you, I think I understand now! Credence can give up his life for Dorothy, so I believe that his love for Dorothy is real!”
Hearing this, Juelz’s hands trembled. He turned around to look at Jonathan. After staring at him for a while, he slowly walked over and spoke with a complex look on his face, “Do you have any more cigarettes? Give me one.”
The two of them squatted in that empty corner, smoking sadly, one cigarette after another.
They had a tacit understanding when it came to Credence and Dorothy, so they didn’t talk about it anymore.
They could only wait for the news from the doctor, be it good or bad, once they come out of the operating rooms.
…
The strong smell of disinfectant filled every nerve in his nose, it was very pungent and unpleasant to the nose. It disturbed her so badly, she couldn’t fall asleep.
If she wasn’t continuously being disturbed by being tossed and turned about, Dorothy felt like she could sleep for a very long time.
She was so tired; she didn’t want to open her eyes.
However, she kept feeling waves of heart-wrenching pain that pulled her back from her dreams.
Two days later, Dorothy woke up. Her vision was blurry and white. She was in a daze, and the incandescent white lights shone brightly in front of her.
She felt as if she was being torn to pieces. Not just her heart, but her entire body was in pain.
Suddenly, she heard a suppressed squeal of surprise coming from above her.
“Dory… You’ve finally woken up. That’s great!”
Juelz looked like he had just been picked up from a garbage dump. His beard was messy and his eyes were bloodshot red. The ecstatic look of excitement in his eyes surprised her.
She asked, “Juelz, what happened to you?”
How did he end up like this?
As soon as she said this, a shadow loomed over her. To be exact, it loomed over her entire upper body and held on to her. “Dory, the baby is fine. The baby in your womb is safe and healthy, did you know that?”
Dorothy was caught off guard after being held in Juelz’s arms. Not long after, she felt something warm dripping on her shoulder and realized what it was. She felt bitter but also moved. She spoke hoarsely, “Juelz, the child is fine, I’m fine too. How is Credence, is he all right?”
When she mentioned Credence, Juelz’s body stiffened. He held her tighter.
If he could, he would devote the rest of his life to protect her, to take care of her from any and every kind of pain and suffering. He wouldn’t let her wallow in despair.
Unfortunately, the fact that they were cousins denied him the right to do so.
“Credence, he…” Juelz slowly looked at her. He wanted to speak, but he stopped himself.
Dorothy was keenly aware that something was wrong. She slowly blinked her eyes and tried to clear her muddled brain. In the end, she recalled what had happened before she passed out.
She remembered that Credence fell in front of her and stopped moving. Her heart suddenly tightened, and her delicate body trembled in Juelz’s arms. She looked at the door with her eyes and murmured, “Tell me, what happened to Credence? What happened to him?”
