Credence was on the phone for a long while. He had been listening to the person on the other side of the phone throughout the entire call. He kept his solemn expression and never spoke a word.
About ten minutes later, he hung up the phone with a dark expression. He grabbed Dorothy and strode out; he did not even eat the plate of food she had brought him.
“What’s wrong?” Dorothy asked nervously as she tried to keep up with his strides with her weakened body.
The man’s face was darker than black ink and a hint of coldness flashed in his eyes. “Something happened at the company.” He explained shortly.
“What is it? Why are you in such a hurry?”
Having been married to this man for four years, Dorothy knew Credence’s icy cold expression meant that something dire had happened even though he was deliberately trying to control his temper in front of her. Otherwise, he wouldn’t look like that.
“I need to get to Scott Group right away.”
“Did something dire happen?”
“Yeah, it’s quite a tricky situation.” Credence replied and softened his tone to appease Dorothy. He pinched her fingers and added, “I’ll get someone to send you back to the hospital. Sorry I can’t personally send you back tonight.”
“You don’t have to worry about me. Just go and settle it.”
She understood things always have their priorities. Moreover, Dorothy was not the clingy type so she told him to leave and not worry about her.
Even so, Credence did not back down. He shook his head and insisted, “No, I won’t be at ease if I don’t see you leave safely first.”
When she heard this, Dorothy felt her heart prickle with heat. She looked up at him and said, “Alright, then I’ll leave first. You can get Mr. Stanton to give me a ride back.”
That had been Credence’s plan as well. He then immediately called Jonathan, who had already escaped and was having some of his fun.
In less than five minutes, Jonathan came running from the guest room on the second floor to Credence’s side. He panted and said, “Credence, you can head off to your company now. You want me to send Dorothy back to Belle, right? No problem! I promise she gets back safe.”
“Good. Dorothy, give me a call once you reach Belle’s ward, alright?”
Due to the urgency of the matter, Credence could not continue to speak with Dorothy. After that, he quickly jumped into his black Maybach and started the engine.
At that moment, he received a phone call from Benjamin. The noise on the other side of the phone grew louder and louder and the sound of crying and cursing was overwhelming.
Credence only replied with a low “Um”. As he finally hung up the phone, his aura grew freezing cold.
Meanwhile, Dorothy had already gotten into Jonathan’s car. Through the half-opened window, she could see that Credence’s expression darkened even further. She could not help but remind him, “Drive safely.”
Credence turned to look at her with a deep gaze as he could tell she was worried about him and said, “Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to myself for your sake!”
From the information Benjamin provided, he deduced that this riot could have been fueled by a mastermind.
But who?
Rosalie? Or could it be her backer?
Or perhaps Jeremy. He had always been hostile towards him after all.
It could even be other business rivals that he had successfully defeated before.
Dorothy was stunned by Credence’s words. What exactly happened in the company for him to say so?
Belle had just accepted him as her father. If anything happened to him, it would definitely be a huge blow to her.
What’s more, he was the key to Belle’s cure.
Dorothy poked her head out the window and looked at the man sitting in the driver’s seat. She wanted to ask more about what was going on, only to see him lick his lips and flash her a charming smile, “Go back to the hospital with Jonathan and take good care of yourself and Belle, alright? I can only settle the matter with an eased mind knowing that you two are fine.”
Dorothy knew she could not persuade him any further, so she only nodded.
How could she not be worried about him knowing that he had to personally deal with the issue in the company when the injury on his leg was still serious.
Jonathan shrugged and comforted her, “Rest assured, Dorothy. With Credence’s abilities, not even ten strong men can beat him in a fight.
As for his intelligence, he would be able to crush 99% of the world’s human beings.
So you don’t have to worry about such a capable man like Credence at all!”
“Yeah.”
Dorothy’s heart was filled with sorrow after that. After all, she did not know Jonathan too well. She merely nodded politely, closed her eyes, leaned back into her seat, and stopped talking.
Two cars drove out of there one after the other.
The Maybach turned right at the next intersection and suddenly increased its speed to over 75 miles per hour. The car flew at an extremely high speed on the empty road.
Credence arrived at his office building in the central business district of Talco City a little over midnight.
The main entrance was blocked by a group of people who looked like the family members of workers. They were making a huge scene.
A few people held red banners with lines of shocking words written in white.
“Heartless real estate company! They killed my husband! A life for a life!”
“F*ck Scott Group, give me back my husband’s life!”
“I want Credence Scott’s life! A life for a life!”
The gates were surrounded by lots of people. But it was hard to tell how many of them were actual victims and how many were hired by the mastermind to escalate the situation at that moment.
Since it was such a chaotic mess, it was not convenient for him to enter the company through the entrance.
Credence narrowed his eyes, turned the steering wheel to the left, and drove to the back of the building.
There was an emergency exit there. Apart from Benjamin and him, no one else in the company knew about it.
The exit was just for show, however, it was especially useful whenever such moments occurred.
Benjamin knew Credence would get here as fast as he could, so he had already been waiting inside for a long time. He paced back and forth as he looked at the clock on his phone on and off.
As soon as Credence opened the narrow side door, he saw Benjamin’s eyes lit up as he ran to him and said, “Mr. Scott, just as I told you over the phone earlier, the construction at the Bramble Garden collapsed two hours ago and five construction workers died from it.
The most troubling part is that there are a lot of reporters outside. I heard even the reporters from the capital are here to report about this.
The families of the deceased all contended that it is our fault. They accused Scott Group of jerry-building to rush the completion of the construction and to be able to earn the profit earlier.”
They are demanding ten billion dollars for the loss of their family members’ lives. They said they would quiet down if we agree to their request!”
Credence frowned and said, “There was never a problem with the construction from the very beginning. How could it suddenly collapse?”
“I don’t understand either.” Benjamin immediately reported, “I went to inspect a few days ago and there wasn’t anything wrong with it. It hasn’t even been that long, yet five lives have been taken. I believe that someone must be behind all this.
What’s more, it took the reporters less than 15 minutes to arrive after the rioters just got here. They couldn’t have possibly gotten wind so early on!”
“Someone must be manipulating in the shadows.”
Credence stepped out of the elevator and walked to his office with a cold, impassive look and a bitter smile.
Who on earth was so determined to make things difficult for him?
