Mia’s pov
I stretched out my hand as far as it could go after that leap, hoping with everything inside of me that I will be able to grab a branch, and I closed my eyes as I felt my finger slipped through thin air. I managed to grab a branch, but it wasn’t strong enough to hold my weight.
I let out the biggest sigh of relief for my body since my 18 years of existence and even though the entire weight of my body was being held just by my hands now and it was also extremely painful, I encouraged myself with the knowledge that I was closer to freedom or so I thought, because as I was trying to balance myself and move my way down the tree and found out that I had misjudged the strength of the branch and before I knew it…
I was falling down to the ground and the only thing that stopped me from having serious severe injuries was the fact that I was bumping into one branch after the other that’s actually scraped my face and body, dragging pieces of my flesh along with it but it somehow softened my fall until I was finally slumped on the grass.
I tried to walk but then folded back on the floor, my knee was definitely already dislocated, telling from the sharp pain that shot up my leg at that moment. After a few more tries, I gave up on the supposed freedom and laid with my face planted on the grass, and the tears began to creep out from the corner of my eyes.
I had not really thought this plan through, and had just done most of the things on impulse. This was the result of it now that I was greatly regretting my attempt at running away right now, as I sobbed uncontrollably.
It wasn’t long before one of my kidnapper’s men who was on patrol saw me, and the first thing they did was to point guns at me and lit up their torchlights.
And then they recognised me and immediately called their leader. I could feel my heart pounding harshly against my chest when I heard that he was coming over.
He’d probably laugh at me, make fun of me and try to teach me a lesson I wouldn’t easily forget. That’d even be the best case scenario, considering that he literally showed me the detached limb of a person earlier today.
What if he cuts off one of my limbs as punishment?
Even though my face was planted to the ground with fear, I could sense when he walked into the garden. It wasn’t hard to feel his presence because his men instantly fell silent at once and I felt goosebumps rise all over my body with the way everywhere also became chilier as well.
I could also sense the murderous intent in his steps and I began to count the last moments of my life realizing that I did not even amount to anything in the 18 years that I had existed.
Finally, he was standing in front of me but he did not speak to me immediately rather he turned to his men and asked them how they had caught me, then they told him that they had heard the loud noise and approached this place to find out that I was on the ground they thought that somebody was actually sneaking in.
As they explained to him he was not yet regarding me and my heart pounded wondering what he was going to do to me.
I had been too dumb to even consider the fact that I could be caught.
Perhaps, Maeve’s successful escape was what had made me feel like mine was also going to go really smoothly.
“Stand up,”
he said in a commanding voice and then with my voice shaking pathetically while mortification engulfed my entire being, I told him that I couldn’t stand because my knee had been dislocated.
“I didn’t ask if your knee was dislocated, I told you to stand up,” He repeated himself and his anger was beginning to seep into his voice. Even though my entire body was trembling and gripped with fear, I badly wanted to do as ge has asked..
But, I could not get up because my knee would not allow me to, or at least that was what I thought… right before a loud banging sound echoed right from the side of the door I was completely crumbled in, and it only took a couple of seconds for my brain to recognise that that had actually been a bullet which had been aimed a few feet away from me in a warning.
Before another second could pass, I sprinted up to my feet but almost immediately, I was crashing down again, against the tree this time. The tree sustained most of my body up now.
Intense pain was coursing through my entire body and I could barely see clearly because of the amount of tears sliding down my face right now.
Even though I’ve seen him point his gun at me countless times before, I had never seen him actually shoot at me, so it came as a shock when I looked into his face and saw the pure fury that was boiling behind his eyes.
I could see now that my days were numbered.
I began to beg him to spare my life as I had done the first night that I had been placed before him, hoping that once again he will take pity on me.
I didn’t want to die, especially so young when I had experienced so little of life.
He walked over to me and his movements were so fast it was almost as if he was not walking on the grass was just gliding over until he was in front of me and then he grabbed me by my chin, forcing my face towards him.
“It seems like I have not made myself clear with you…so this is the last time I am going to tell you that your life is mine and I will do with it whatever I see fit. Are you listening?!”
His voice was low and filled with so much authority as he spoke and I found myself crying harder as I meekly nodded like a puppet doll.
“I understand!” I cried out, struggling to keep myself standing on one foot as the other one had given up on me.
“This is my last warning.” He growled.
“Because, when I pull the trigger at you next time, believe me when I say that I won’t miss on purpose like I did tonight.”
