“Do you really know who killed my parents? Please tell me who they are,” I said.
Alicia looked at me and replied, “Yeah, of course!”
“Then tell me who are they…” I replied.
“I am going to tell you about it, but first you need to be strong and brave because you don’t totally know them and what they can do.”
What can they do? Are they that difficult to catch? Maybe they are also spirits like Alicia, so the police officers cannot see them. It’s been months, but they still have not told me anything about those murderers.
Speaking of the police, there was a carriage that had stopped at the front of my gate and there was a policeman who got out of the carriage. He went towards the gate and pressed the button there to make the doorbell ring. As usual, everyone is busy now and there is nobody who opened the gate. So, I am the one who opened it and let the constable enter.
He was wearing a thick denim shirt, thick black trousers, and black boots with a yellow sole. He appeared to be very serious, and I could not judge him because cops are very serious about their jobs. He has a high nose, short hair, thick eyebrows, brown eyes, and a round face with some hair on his chin and lower cheeks. His face had some wrinkles and his eye-bags were showing when he smiled even a little. He was also taller, stronger, weightier and older than me. The muscles on his arms have popping on his brown skin.
He looked at my face and said, “Good day, miss—”
“Good day too… I am Sheena Breaks,” I replied.
“Oh… you’re miss Sheena Breaks, the only daughter of the late Aya and Clark Breaks?” The police asked while holding the paper. I was appalled when he said, “Can I invite you to the police station? I just have some questions to ask you.”
“Yeah, I am Sheena Breaks and can you please don’t mention the name of my parents again? And, can I know why you are inviting me to the police station?” I tried to speak normally.
“Okay, sorry for mentioning your dead parents, but we had received a report about the guard that was once working here. Someone had reported that you had once fought with him, and his family had been searching for him.”
G*ddammit! I did not expect that the guard would choose to report me to the police instead of quieting down and living peacefully. He was really trying my patience. But I cannot blame him if his conscience was persecuting him and would not make him fall asleep every night. I also did not expect that the guard that I had killed would still have a family. Maybe his family had been searching for him for over a month, but it was a brain teaser that they did not go here and told me about it. I don’t know what to do now. I don’t want to be a prisoner because of the crime that I am not the one who did, but the curse. The curse that cannot be imprisoned too.
Alicia was also beside me. “Don’t worry, Sheena, I will help you,” she whispered by my ear. She abruptly held the arm of the naivety police from the back and shouted, “Kill him now! Else he will be the one to put you in prison!”
The naive constable was so shocked when he felt that there was someone holding his hand, though there was nobody there. Who would not be scared if they felt someone holding them but could not see who it was?
I had not considered alternative solutions to my problems because I was afraid the constable would lock me up. I saw a big stone on the ground, so I got it and un-hesitatingly stroked the him on his head.
The constable had cried many times because of the pain, but Alicia blocked his mouth so that he could not make any noise. But though he could not cry, his tears still told me that he felt pain. It had not lasted long enough because after I stroked him three times, he was out of consciousness.
His head was too hard that it was not broken when I stroked it. I stroked him again and again, but it seemed that he was a nail, and his steel-hard head could not be broken, and his feet were also pointed like a nail, as if he was going to bury himself in the ground as I was striking him with a stone.
Though what I was doing was a crime, Alicia was used to laughing. I don’t know why she was laughing, but I sensed that it was because of what I was doing to the constable.
“Glue him more—on the ground.” Alicia chuckled.
“G*ddammit! what a steel-hard head he has.”
“Go on faster, stroke him more!” She half-shouted. “He deserves it. We should bury him on the ground so that he will be totally quiet.”
Because of fear that there was someone who could see what I was doing, I stroked that constable many times, faster and faster, until half of his body had been buried on the ground. I did not stop striking him until his head was the only part of his body that could be seen. But it is the same with the nail. His head is so difficult to bury in the ground. More than ten times, I stroked his head, but he stopped moving and it seemed that there was something blocking his pointed feet from the ground.
“What should we do now? His head cannot be buried on the ground.” I was panting while saying those words. My sweat is also dripping down onto the ground.
“Don’t worry,” Alicia said, then pointed her finger at the head of the constable. I was so amazed that the head of the constable was totally buried in the ground.
“You are so powerful. Why did not you tell me that you could bury him in just a second and you made me do it the difficult way?” I complained.
“Oh, sorry, but you need to be strong and brave so that you can conquer all the trials if you really want to get rid of the curse.”
“Trials? What kind of trials?”
“Maybe it is time to tell you the things that you need to know about the curse and how to get rid of it,” Alicia said.
Her words sounds interesting. It was not totally boring to have a powerful friend like Alicia. There is just something messing with my brain right now. It was the reason why Alicia told me to kill the constable, though we both knew that there was other way to escape from him. Especially since Alicia is powerful, and killing someone was an immoral way to make them quiet. Maybe there is a heavy reason why Alicia told me to do it, so I did not waste an opportunity to know.
“Why did you tell me to kill the constable? Is there an appropriate reason why we need to kill him?” I asked.
“Well, I know that you are full of sympathy and that is your weakness, so we need to remove that from you. If you are asking a reason, it was a part of how you can get rid of the curse.” She tried to explain it, though it was incomprehensible. It made me slowly scratch my head.
“Still, I don’t understand the way to get rid of this curse. I have been asking you about it for a long time, but you are just making me more baffled,” I complained.
“O sorry, I had forgotten to tell you about it.” Alicia replied. “But are you sure that you are willing to do it even whatever it takes? Think about the word [whatever it takes] because it was a serious thing,” she said.
I thought for a while and said, “Just give me a second.”
I go towards the balcony. I never knew that Alicia was a little bit lazy. She can also transport herself from one place to another, and she used it to go here from there. It made me more baffled as to what really was the only way to get rid of this curse. Maybe it will risk my life and waste my opportunity to live in this world. She had been telling me to be strong and brave for this, without even telling me what it was. But what does not kill you makes you stronger, so I decided to risk everything just to get rid of this curse.
“Yeah, I am ready to die, and do whatever it takes to get rid of this curse,” I said, bravely.
“Oh! That is what I like about you, because you are so brave and that is your courage. That was also the reason why I chose to put that curse on you, because you can help me.”
“Shhh—don’t mention that again. Now tell me, what is the only way to get rid of this curse?”
“The only way to get rid of that curse is not by risking your own life but the lives of other people. You need to risk the lives of a hundred people. You need to risk a hundred lives in order to get rid of that curse. Now tell me if you are really sure that you can risk a hundred of lives just to get the thing that you solely hope for?”
The words [a hundred lives of people] echoed many times in my brain. I was thinking if it was the only way to get rid of the curse, but I heard that Alicia clearly said it—that the only way to get rid of this curse is to kill a hundred people. I knew that it would be a big challenge for me.
“I know that your weakness is attacking you now, but that is the only way. If you won’t do it, there is also a possibility that the curse won’t set you free. Not just that, if you can’t kill a hundred people by yourself, the curse will be the one to kill people, and it might kill more than just a hundred, but thousands of people. As long as you are alive, it will stay forever inside your body. So, could you see blood every day?”
Eventually, I was enlightened about what it really meant. I need to kill a hundred people in order to get rid of the curse. Though it was difficult for me, I don’t have other choices. I am not thinking that it is better to kill a hundred people with my own hands than to let the curse kill thousands of people by itself. I don’t wanna stain my hands with the blood of innocent people. I knew that there was another easy way to make it. Well, I can choose the people that I am going to kill if I am using my own hands. The curse is so merciless that it kills even innocent people, as long as they are alive. I had an idea that would not make me feel more guilty about doing a crime. Though life has no price, it is better to kill wicked people that can do nothing in this world than to kill innocent people.
“So what is your take?” Alicia asked. “Are you willing to kill hundreds of people to get rid of the curse? Or will you tolerate the curse that lives inside your body forever? That curse is like a toxin, that will slowly occupy your body until everything you have will be affected, destroyed and—” She had not finished her words when I interrupted.
“I am willing to kill a hundred people with my own hands, rather than thousands by this curse.” I said those words bravely, though the tears from my eyes were dripping downward.
“Would you like to tell me why you chose it?” She asked.
“I am not a child that will tolerate the heinous crime that the curse wants to do. I chose it to stop the curse. I’d better kill a hundred people to get rid of them, to give justice to my parents’ death and to kick all of the bad people in this world.”
“Good choice, you are totally a clever girl! Well, you can choose who to kill if you are the one who is controlling yourself, unlike when the curse was controlling your body.”
“Yeah, unlike you, you are a little bit foolish. If you did not offer me power, I am not in a dilemma this time.”
“Sheena, please let us just let bygones be bygones and have a good partnership. You already know why I need to do that. Don’t you have any sympathy for me? My age is already thousands of years old and I am tired of strolling through this world. Though I am already a spirit, I also need to rest in peace.”
“Why won’t you use your power to get rid of that curse?”
