After hearing her shout with all her might and seeing that her face was full of despair, Gorman suddenly realized that he’d touched a nerve.
Wendy didn’t even have such a big reaction last time when she walked in on him cheating on her with another woman.
He took a step forward with the intent of placing both his hands on her shoulders, but she immediately took a step back, as if she wanted to keep her distance from him.
she immediately took a step back, as if she wanted to keep her distance from him.
Gorman’s voice became much softer now. “I didn’t know about any this, Wendy. I swear, I didn’t think that-”
“You insisted on interrogating me even after I told you not to. Moreover, you keep saying that you love me, but your love is nothing more than poison to me. You’ve always been the selfish one. You only ever care about how YOU feel.
“I truly regret not heeding my mother’s advice to avoid men like you. The only reason I decided to be with you back then was because you were so persistent. If I can turn back time, I want nothing to do with you, Gorman. I won’t give you or your mother the chance to hurt me ever again. From now on, I’m going to make your life a living h*ll as long as you live,”
she fumed with a shaky voice, her glare razor sharp.
With that, she spun around and left.
He looked at her figure which was disappearing into the distance and knitted his brows. It was obvious that she was absolutely livid right now.
He’d never seen her so enraged before.
It was the first time.
However, he didn’t go after her either as he felt that he didn’t have the courage to quell her anger even if he managed to catch up to her.
He balled his hands into fists. He’d been at a loss at what to do in the past few days after finding out her true identity, coupled with the fact that he felt he’d been lied to. After all, if his mother knew that she was a Nicholson, she’d definitely approve of them going out.
But it didn’t cross his mind that the reason why the Nicholson’s didn’t want to make their own blood daughter’s identity public… was because they’d already disowned her.
He could finally sympathise with the anger, sadness, and despair that was reflected in her eyes just now.
He felt remorse for turning a deaf ear to her pleas and interrogating her when he clearly knew the type of person she was very well.
Once the coast was clear, she ran to the campus gates in one breath. Seeing that Baron’s car was already parked there, she immediately shoved herself in.
“Can you drive me over to Big City first, Baron?” She requested after Baron had also entered the vehicle.
“Right away, Miss Evans.” He obliged.
When she arrived at the entrance of the Big City neighborhood, she got out of the car and returned to the compound alone.
The paparazzi didn’t manage to catch her face last time, so she tried pretending to be another resident who stayed in the neighborhood this time, and passed by the entrance to her building.
Not too far away from where she was, two men were sitting on the ground. One of them was carrying a camera behind him, while the other held on to a microphone as they chatted.
The two of them didn’t pay any heed to her as she was just passing by.
She decided to leave after shuffling around for a bit.
She was slightly agitated by this. “These two must be crazy. Do they actually plan to stay here for the rest of their lives?” She thought.
After walking for some distance, she gazed up at the unit she’d rented.
The annoyance in her heart grew. She really liked her little nest too.
Outside, Wendy got out of the car and entered the compound.
Baron fished out his phone and dialed Henson’s number. “Your intuition is really like that of a god, Master Henson. You were right, Miss Evans actually returned to Big City,” he announced.
“Noted. Just wait for her a while, then drive her back to the villa in a few minutes time,” Henson ordered.
“Yes, sir,” he obliged.
Baron was puzzled. How could Mr. Charles have known?
A smile crept on Henson’s lips as he sat in another car that was headed back to the villa.
Wendy was literally defenseless against him.
Last night, she’d told him that she decided to head back to her apartment to scan for traces of paparazzo, and if the coast was clear, she planned to move back in.
Knowing that, how could he possibly let her go through with her plans?
It was so easy to station the paparazzi wherever he liked too.
After brisk walking to the entrance of the residential complex, she suddenly stopped and fished out her phone to call the landlady.
“Hello, Auntie. I’m Wendy, the girl who’s currently renting one of your places. Are you free to chat now?” She asked.
“Oh, Wendy is it? Hello there, is there anything I can do for you?” the landlady responded pleasantly.
“Well, it goes like this. I have a few personal matters to attend to lately so I don’t think I’ll be able to stay in this area anymore. So, I was wondering if I can sublet my unit?” She queried.
Although the rent there wasn’t too high, it was still quite a large sum in her eyes.
Since she was unsure of when she’d get the chance to stay there again, she thought it’d be better to just move elsewhere for now.
However, she thought it wasn’t right of her to terminate her contract after only paying rent there for such a short amount of time, which is why she had to resort to shamelessly asking the landlady if she’d let her sublet the unit.
“I see. But to tell you the truth, Wendy, I’ve already sold the unit to someone else,” the landlady answered honestly.
“Huh?” she said, flabbergasted for a moment. “I should move out as soon as possible then,” she hurriedly said.
“Let me explain. The person who bought the unit told me that they planned to rent the place out instead of staying there themselves. Since he knew there was a tenant already, he bought the whole unit from me right away, which is why I didn’t inform you yet,” the landlady explained.
She turned around and gazed back at the unit which was located not too far away from where she was standing. She was dumbfounded. The person who bought the place must be insane.
Who’d buy such an expensive house just to rent it out?
Who knows how long it’ll take to get back their money’s worth?
“Then, is it alright if you give me the new landlord’s number, auntie? I can talk it out with them myself,” Wendy asked.
“Sure, sure. I’ll text you the number,” she answered.
After hanging up, Wendy stepped towards the entrance where Baron was still waiting for her.
Baron was still waiting for her.
She got into the car and received a text from the landlady shortly after.
She peered at the number and let the call go through.
Almost immediately after the call connected, a man’s voice sounded from the other end, “Hi Miss Evans.”
How did this guy know that her surname was Evans? She surmised it was highly unlikely that her landlady had relayed her situation to him in such a short amount of time.
Also, why does his voice sound so familiar?
“And you are …” she trailed off, confused.
“I’m Mr. Charles’ secretary. Dayne Taylor’s the name,” he greeted.
Secretary Dayne felt something was off. She was the one who called him first, but she was also the one who didn’t know who he was.
“Um, sorry. Wrong number,” she muttered sheepishly.
“No problem,” he answered.
After hanging up, she blinked in disbelief a few times. She realised something not long after.
No wonder Henson could change up the locks and furniture so easily back then.
It turned out he bought the house.
She didn’t know what to say. He must be crazy.
The driver drove her home in the end.
Henson also got back at the same time and upon seeing Wendy, he smirked, “You’re back later than usual, did you work overtime again?”
She looked at him with a strange look on her face.
Sensing that something was amiss, he asked, “What’s wrong?”
“I was deliberating on how to tell you I’ve decided not to rent your place,” she said flatly.
“You don’t have to pay a single dime in order to stay here. So, since it’s free, there’s no reason to decline my offer, right?” He asked again.
“I was talking about your house in Big City,” she said after pursing her lips. Her gaze remained calm.
Seeing that she was unhappy, he made a gesture towards Donald the butler.
Donald swiftly led everyone out of the room.
“How come you know about this?” He asked with a chuckle.
“I phoned the landlady in hopes of moving out, but she spilled everything instead,” she said.
“Are you mad?”
“What do you think?”
“Does it really matter whose house it is you’re renting?”
“Don’t you think you’re acting awfully childish right now, Henson?” she replied with a sigh.
