With Aldrich injured and in need of recovery, Maggie no longer had the urge to go home. She couldn’t risk the safety of her children, and staying at the mansion provided her with better care and support.
However, since waking up in Aldrich’s bed, Maggie hadn’t set eyes on him. Curiosity got the best of her, and she turned to the butler, asking, “Thomas, I haven’t seen Aldrich for several days. Is he getting better?”
Thomas chuckled, well aware that Mr. Barrett visited her while she slept. He had accidentally run into Mr. Barrett twice during his nighttime patrols, but Maggie seemed oblivious to it all.
“Maggie, if you wish to see Mr. Barrett, you will see him,” Thomas replied with a knowing smile.
Maggie blushed, awkwardly retorting, “I… I wasn’t thinking about him, Thomas. I was just asking casually.”
With that, she grabbed a book on child-rearing and headed towards the garden.
Of course, this child-rearing book wasn’t about ordinary human babies. It was a book specifically about raising werewolf infants, found by Charlie. Charlie had gathered an entire room full of books on werewolf babies, and Maggie and Aldrich read them every day.
Maggie delved into the book amidst the woods, absorbing every word. The growth and development of werewolf babies were rapid, with deep bonds forming between parents and offspring. The stronger the emotional connection between parents, the tighter the bond. Historical records even mentioned some parents and werewolf babies having such a powerful mental connection that they could sense each other’s physical sensations and truly experience each other’s feelings.
“It’s truly incredible… So, it was the children who guided me to dream of the silver wolf?” Maggie closed the book and gently caressed her slowly growing belly.
“I love you very much, my children. I can’t wait to meet you,” she added. “Your dad loves you a lot too.”
Aldrich’s name quietly echoed in Maggie’s mind. Lately, he occupied her thoughts along with his caring nature, the responsibilities he shouldered, and the beautiful life he envisioned for their family.
Maggie slipped into contemplation as she strolled deeper into the garden. Dense foliage and low shrubs created a serene atmosphere. She marveled at the picturesque scenery, wondering what Aldrich might be doing at that moment.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the bushes ahead. Maggie turned her head and saw Aldrich approaching her, just a few steps away.
“Aldrich, what brings you here?” Maggie exclaimed, taken aback by his sudden appearance.
Aldrich raised an eyebrow and said, “You inadvertently entered my hunting ground. I can sense it, and I believe our little ones guided you here.” Aldrich’s gaze was filled with tenderness and desire as his hand gently rested on Maggie’s lower abdomen.
Maggie was greatly surprised, and the warmth of Aldrich’s hand left her momentarily weak in the knees, almost causing her to stumble.
“It’s our babies!” Aldrich quickly extended his arms, encircling Maggie’s waist, and asked with a smile, “Are you alright?”
Maggie nodded, feeling the warmth between them, her heart racing like a startled deer. “I… I’m fine, Aldrich. I’m just a bit surprised…”
“This is my duty. I’m grateful to do all this for you,” Aldrich said as he held Maggie’s delicate hand. His once hard heart had now softened. He gently asked, “Would you like to witness a phenomenon of light?”
“The phenomenon of light?” Maggie inquired with a hint of confusion. Faced with Aldrich’s hopeful gaze, she nodded.
Aldrich led Maggie, clearing all obstacles along the way, and said, “Look, Maggie, that’s light.”
Maggie followed Aldrich’s gaze and saw a radiant, transparent beam of light descending from above, piercing through the dense foliage. The light flowed elegantly, reminiscent of delicate, ancient silk.
“Oh, it’s so beautiful,” Maggie couldn’t help but exclaim, appreciating Aldrich with a grateful look. He explained, “It’s a natural occurrence. I saw it earlier while running through the woods, and I thought it would be great to share this sight with you.”
The breathtaking scenery uplifted Maggie’s spirits. She looked at the gentle and caring man before her, feeling as if they had known each other for a thousand years in that single moment.
On their way back, Aldrich told Maggie, “Hold onto my neck tightly, Maggie. I promise nothing will harm you.”
Maggie held Aldrich close, her heartbeat in rhythm with their steps, as he swiftly maneuvered through the woods back to their residence.
Thomas spotted Aldrich carrying Maggie and his anxiety turned into joy. “Miss Nelson, I was worried when I heard that you ventured into the woods behind the garden, but luckily, Mr. Barrett was there.”
Aldrich carefully set Maggie down and gently reminded the butler, “Thomas, perhaps it’s time to address the lady of Barrett Manor differently.”
Now all eyes were on Maggie, and she heard Thomas raise his voice, his tone filled with acknowledgment and happiness. “Yes, ma’am, please accept my sincerest apologies.”
Maggie’s face turned beet red!
Aldrich extended his hand to her, waiting for Maggie to take it. Maggie noticed Aldrich’s hand hanging in the air with the corner of her eye. Her heart raced in her chest, and after a moment’s hesitation, she abruptly turned and ran.
No one expected Maggie’s reaction. The atmosphere had been harmonious as they walked out of the garden, so why did she reject Aldrich?
Aldrich also felt puzzled, but he knocked on the door politely and tried to maintain composure. “Maggie, what’s wrong? Open the door; I’m here waiting for you.”
This would only intensify Maggie’s anxiety. She sat by the door, feeling vulnerable and her thoughts in disarray. “Aldrich, we’re not the same, we can’t be together.”
Aldrich was momentarily bewildered, but he responded without hesitation. “Maggie, you’re the mother of our two children, someone deeply connected to me. You are indispensable to me.”
Please note that Aldrich did not imply any romantic feelings. Maggie suppressed the love that ignited within her and whispered, “Aldrich, it’s just our children between us.”
But love is a mysterious force, beyond human control. In that moment, Maggie couldn’t foresee the depth of their emotions in the end.
