Dave POV
I stretched wide on my bed. It’s been a long time I’ve slept on such a comfortable bed. I went to my mother’s room to check if my mother was awake yet.
Yes, you heard me right, my mother’s room. We now have different rooms of our own.
“Good morning mother.” I greeted as I opened the door.
“Good morning son. Why aren’t you prepared for work yet?” She asked.
“There is still a lot of time left.” I told her and pointed at the clock.
“Oh. Yes, you are right.” She said.
I got some money from the back I kept it in and went back to my mother’s room.
“Mother, what should I buy?” I asked.
“Don’t worry about that. I will handle it. Just start preparing for work.” She said.
“Okay mother. I said and gave her the money.
She stood up and took the money with her to go and get the stuff.
I left and went into the bathroom and took a shower. I also brushed my teeth and did other things before finally wearing my clothes.
Just after I was done I heard a knock on the door.
“Who could that be at this time? And I also don’t remember telling anyone where we live. Most of all we don’t have neighbors.” I said to myself.
I went to the kitchen and took a frying pan from there.
Mr Adams is really a good man. He even filled the kitchen with cooking equipments for I and my mother.
I went towards the door with the frying pan in my hand. I breathed and then opened the door slightly first.
Oh. Thank goodness it was Mr Charles.
I opened the door and welcomed him in.
“Come right in.” I said.
“Good morning Dave.” He said.
“Oh. Sorry sir. I forgot to greet first. I was just excited to see you. Good morning.” I said.
“It’s okay. But I just don’t understand one thing.” He said.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“Why are you welcoming me in with a frying pan?” He asked and I laughed.
“Sorry about that. It was for protection. I thought it was a stranger.” I replied and he laughed.
“Now you know it’s me. You van put it down.” He said and came in.
“Where us your mother?” He asked.
“She went to buy food stuff or rather, breakfast.” I replied.
“So it’s just us men?” He asked.
“Yes sir.” I replied.
“Mind if we talk? It will be fun. Just the both of us.” He said.
“Okay.” I replied and we both sat on a sofa.
Charles POV
I have to find out everything about Dave’s mother and now that she is not around this is a good chance for me.
I have to do this right for Adams. I know him very well. I might get fired if I mess up and I don’t want that. This is already his third day for the bet.
I sat on the sofa with Dave and began questioning him. I have to ask questions about him first before asking about his mother. I wouldn’t want him to get suspicious about me.
“So tell me more about yourself.” I said.
“What do you want to know in particular?” He asked.
“Well… Um… Anything would be good but let’s start from the basic things. What’s your favourite food and favourite colour?” I asked.
“Okay. My favourite food is… Actually I don’t have a favourite food. I just eat anything I’m given by my mother. But my favourite colour is pink.” He replied.
“Pink?” I repeated, just to be sure.
“Yes sir. Pink.” He replied.
“That’s weird. I haven’t met any man or boy whose favourite colour is pink. Isn’t that a girls’ colour?” I asked.
“Yes. It is, but I like the colour.” He replied.
I got it. I know what to ask him next now.
“If you were to choose one person in this world that you can’t live without, who would it be?” I asked him.
“My mother.” He replied almost immediately.
“And why is that so?” I asked.
“What other reason could there be? She is my mother and I love her so much. What can a child do without the mother?” He said.
“Oh, that reminds me. I don’t even know her name.” I said.
“Her name is Anna.” He replied.
“Wow. That’s a beautiful name. What’s her favourite thing to do?” I asked.
“I thought this conversation was about us.” Dave said.
“Yes it is.” I replied.
“Then why are you asking about my mother all of a sudden?” He asked.
I guess I underrated him. This kid is smart.
“Well I asked before that if you can choose one person in the world that you can’t live without who would it be? And you said your mother.” I said.
“Okay. And?” He asked.
“These are only test questions to find out how much you know about the person in particular.” I answered.
“Okay. You can fire on sir.” He said.
Just then his mother stepped in.
“Mr Charles, you’re here.” She said.
“Uh… Yes. I am.” I replied.
“We were just having a chat mother.” Dave said.
“Really? What kind of chat might that be?” Dave’s mother said.
“Ah. Look at the time. Just ten minutes left to go to work.” I said, trying to change the topic.
“Yes. Work starts by seven doesn’t it? You came here quite early Mr Charles.” Dave’s mother said.
Now I see where Dave got his brains from.
“Just to check on you two. If you are enjoying your new home.” I said.
“Thank you. That’s nice of you. Will you join us for breakfast? I’m sorry, I noticed that its almost time for Dave to leave, so I only bought already prepared bread and eggs. I’m going to prepare for tomorrow’s breakfast ahead of time.” Dave’s mother said.
“No thanks. I’ll wait for Dave in my car. Once he is done he can meet me outside.” I replied.
“Okay, he will.” Dave’s mother said and I left.
I’ll ask him while driving him to work. There’s still a chance for me.
