“But it’s already late,” the young nurse’s voice choked up.
“What do you mean, late?” Harry felt like he had fallen into an ice cellar, a sharp pain piercing his heart and collapsing it.
“Miss Mason has been in the operating room for an hour, her condition is very critical, I’m afraid she may have…”
Clang! This time, Harry couldn’t hold onto his phone, watching it drop to the ground, he felt like the straw he had been clinging to for dear life had slipped away.
The lifeline wasn’t cut by himself, but he let go, pushing himself into a corner.
Harry drove madly into the hospital, a place he had just visited not long ago, yet here he was again in less than 48 hours.
But this fear was far greater than the news of Hattie losing her child, it meant that his bond with Hattie might be severed forever. He had always thought of using the child to tie Hattie to him, but what if Hattie didn’t want a child now but changed her mind later? What if she was moved by him, what if she fell in love with him?
The future was uncertain and full of possibilities, with Harry having a thousand “what ifs,” but he forgot that in Hattie’s world, there were none.
After Hattie’s hysterectomy, he had no remaining attachment, not knowing how to hold on to her, with no way left.
Harry rushed upstairs in disarray, seeing the young nurse who had called him in the long corridor.
Ignoring her, Harry was about to charge straight into the operating room.
The nurse’s face had not recovered yet, turning even paler when she saw Harry going mad, her eyes reddening, clearly scared of him, but she still held onto his coat tightly, as if playing tug-of-war to prevent him from approaching the operating room door.
But she was too weak, and when Harry yanked with force, she fell to the ground with a cry, her arm scraped, but she didn’t care about the pain and shouted at Harry’s back, “Mr. Stewart, you can’t go in, Miss Mason is being rescued inside, you will only disturb the doctors, and if something happens to her, you will regret it even more!”
This directly stopped Harry, he abruptly stopped, his body swaying uncontrollably.
He turned around, his eyes red, looking at the nurse who was getting up from the ground, “Isn’t Hattie in there for a hysterectomy? Why is she being rescued? Tell me clearly what happened to her!”
At that moment, Harry was like a wild beast gone mad, ready to pounce at anyone who came near him.
The nurse didn’t explain, she simply handed him the critical condition notice she had been holding onto, “The attending physician asked me to give this to you, to have you sign it.”
Harry looked at the words on it: “Critical Condition Notice,” only given when a patient’s condition is critical to their life.
His heart started to panic uncontrollably, even if he forced himself to calm down, it was futile.
The nurse endured immense pressure, “Shortly after you left, Miss Mason started bleeding heavily from her lower body, she was taken to the rescue room, and the doctors eventually decided on a hysterectomy, her uterus was overloaded with too much blood, and for the sake of her future, this was the only step they could take. Miss Mason signed the surgical consent form despite being barely conscious.”
Why did Hattie suddenly start bleeding heavily? The reason for it was Harry, how did he dare to ask why Hattie was in the rescue room, why her uterus had to be removed, if not for his coercion, at this moment, she should’ve been peacefully lying in a hospital room, not in the rescue room being handed a critical condition notice!
Harry looked at the critical condition notice in the nurse’s hand, it wasn’t his first time seeing one, it was the third time, the first was when his father died in the hospital, the signature was his mother’s, the second time was the one he signed for his mother.
Seeing the critical condition notices twice, he had sent away the two most important people in his life, was it now Hattie’s turn?
“Why… why did it come to this…” Harry mumbled, his lips trembling, his ears buzzing so loud that he couldn’t hear anything, until the nurse forcefully pushed the critical condition notice into his arms.
Even the most patient person would lose their temper at this point, it wasn’t so much a handover as it was a shove.
Harry’s legs were already unsteady, and with a sudden push from the nurse, he crashed against the wall behind him.
Seeing the critical condition notice in his arms about to fall to the ground, he reached out to catch it.
“Mr. Stewart, don’t delay any longer, please sign it quickly.”
Despite his reluctance, Harry could only sign, but his left chest quivered violently, it was so painful, suffocating prickling pain, spreading through his body with his blood, even his fingers shook from the pain, he took the pen but couldn’t grip it tightly.
Harry had always had beautiful handwriting, his favorite font being italic, giving off a domineering aura when signing documents, now, the name he had written countless times suddenly became difficult, the handwriting messy and crooked.
“Will she be okay?” Harry desperately needed someone to comfort him, even just a casual “Hattie will be fine” would be enough.
The nurse said, “She is already in trouble, does it make any sense to ask that now?”
