Although this number had no label, Elisa remembered it clearly.
The amusement park accident, including Hamish’s medical diagnosis, all came from this number.
Why did Elisa suspect Hamish’s involvement back then? First, she knew Hamish’s ruthless nature when it came to achieving his goals. Secondly, he was ill and had nothing to lose if he wanted to do something drastic. When people are on their deathbed, consequences don’t matter.
Secondly, the content of the text message she received. If she didn’t return to Hamish, the danger Louis encountered wouldn’t be as simple as a brake failure. It was already a warning.
The sender provided her with an address in North Bankshire. How could she not be familiar with North Bankshire? It was the “home” where she lived for five years, personally decorated and envisioned as a new home to live with someone she loved.
Unfortunately, looking back, aside from the initial joy, she couldn’t think of anything happy anymore.
The only one who could enter North Bankshire now was Hamish. After the Powell family went bankrupt, she sold the property to Hamish to save money and repay debts.
Elisa accidentally thought for a while, her phone was still ringing, and she only answered it when the ringtone was about to end.
“Miss Powell,” Tobias’s voice came through.
Elisa wasn’t surprised, as she had guessed it earlier.
Regarding Tobias, Elisa couldn’t say if he was good or bad, she just didn’t care. She saw him as a bystander, and a bystander should stay in their place and not disturb each other politely.
“What’s the matter?”
“Miss Powell, could you meet me?” said Tobias.
Elisa chuckled coldly, “There’s no need for us to meet.”
“I have some important documents to give you, and also…” Tobias paused, his voice a bit hoarse, “I want to apologize in person about the amusement park accident. It was me.”
Tobias thought Elisa would angrily scold him but there was silence on the phone, so quiet that he couldn’t hear anything. He suddenly clenched his phone and heard the pounding sound, realizing it was his own nervous heartbeat.
After a while, Elisa’s calm voice came through, “I know, but there’s no need to meet. Let’s live our own lives.”
Respecting others’ lives without disturbing them is proper etiquette. Constantly bothering is impolite, but now only by persisting can Tobias get Elisa to meet and apologize in person and pass on what Hamish entrusted to him to her.
“If you refuse to meet me, Miss Powell, then I’ll wait outside your house every day, keep calling, using different phone numbers,” Tobias added.
Elisa frowned, not surprised that he was an employee Hamish had trained. This behavior was not only irrelevant but also exactly the same in style.
If being soft doesn’t work, try being tough. If being tough doesn’t work, keep pestering. Through persuasion and persistence, they both knew that Elisa was someone who avoided trouble. If they pestered her enough times, she would eventually agree.
Tobias added, “I know you often go to the hospital for pregnancy check-ups. As long as I wait every day, we will eventually meet.”
Elisa suddenly felt chills, her whole body cold. She glanced at Louis, who moved closer to her, making her feel much warmer.
“Is everything okay?” The noise around them didn’t allow Elisa to put the call on speakerphone, and Louis couldn’t hear the conversation, but seeing Elisa’s changing expression, he knew it wasn’t good news.
Was it a threatening call? Louis’s gentle eyes turned sharp like a hawk, filled with vigilance.
Elisa shook her head. She could find other ways to handle this, but Tobias rarely held on to someone like this unless it was important.
“If you want to meet me, you can, I’ll decide the time and place.”
