This scene feels so familiar, reminiscent of when Lila had a car accident a few years ago, and Elisa voluntarily came to donate blood, saying something similar.
“Do you have to make demands at a time like this?” Hamish’s expression suddenly turned cold and hard.
Meeting his icy gaze, Lila subconsciously swallowed, feeling disheartened. She had long stopped caring about how Hamish viewed her. All she wanted was Mrs. Burns’ position.
“If Elisa could do it back then, why can’t I? Hamish, it’s up to you now. Either get engaged to me and I’ll save Elisa, or watch Elisa bleed to death.”
Hamish’s eyes sharpened like a hawk’s. “Are you threatening me?” A chilling expression froze his legs and stomach.
Lila forced herself to remain calm. “Hamish, this isn’t a threat. After so many years in business, you should know that I’m just trying to make things a little better for myself.”
“If you want to live well, I can accommodate you. But why do you want me to get engaged to you when you know…?” Hamish suddenly fell silent, his face contorted with a grimace.
“Because you like Elisa?” She chuckled self-deprecatingly, answering for Hamish.
Hamish’s silence was an admission. His serious expression filled her with jealousy. This was the first time Hamish had admitted his affection for Elisa.
They say it’s better to destroy ten temples than a marriage, but she was determined not to let this “loving couple” end up together.
Lila knew she couldn’t push Hamish too hard, or it would backfire. She knew him better than anyone else, having grown up with him.
As someone long accustomed to power, his lack of empathy stemmed from a childhood deprived of love. If she pushed him too far, she wouldn’t know what he was capable of.
Having the same blood type as Elisa was her only guarantee, one she had to make good use of.
“If it weren’t for her interference, we would have been married long ago. Is it wrong for me to reclaim what is rightfully mine?” Lila’s eyes revealed a touch of paranoia. “You know what you should choose. Besides, I’m only engaged to you now; I haven’t presented a marriage agreement for you to sign, unlike Elisa back then.”
“So, I should thank you?”
Lila casually played with her long hair.
It took a deep breath for Hamish to calm down. “Once you’ve finished donating blood, we’ll set a date for the engagement.”
Internally, Lila sneered. Hamish was a businessman, and she knew he had used underhanded methods countless times. He had effortlessly diverted her last blood donation for Elisa. Did he really think he could do it again this time?
“Hamish, I love you. They say once a woman falls in love, she becomes particularly blind, but being blind doesn’t mean being foolish.”
Hamish narrowed his eyes. “Given the current situation, I don’t have time to call a lawyer to draft an agreement.”
“No need for an agreement. Just log into your Twitter account and post that you’ll be engaged in two months. Have Burns Group retweet it. It shouldn’t be difficult for you.”
It wasn’t difficult, but it would essentially publicize their relationship, and Elisa would find out.
Lila wanted Hamish to understand that there was no way out.
“I’m just using the same tactics Elisa used back then, Hamish. I won’t make things too difficult for you. I know you like Elisa. So, once we’re engaged, I won’t interfere with your relationship. The three of us will continue as we were before, with only a slight change in position.”
Experiencing the same thing twice, this time he truly felt nauseated.
A nurse hurriedly opened the operating room door and, upon seeing Hamish, quickly pulled out two agreements for him to sign. “Mr. Burns, we need you to sign these. Miss Powell’s condition is critical-she’s experiencing severe internal bleeding and requires surgery.”
The nurse’s face was as white as a sheet of paper, her lips trembling as she tried to enunciate each word clearly, her hand shaking uncontrollably as she held one of the agreements.
“What do you mean by severe internal bleeding and the need for surgery? Wasn’t it supposed to be a painless induced delivery? Why does she need surgery now?” Too many questions raced through Hamish’s mind.
There were things he didn’t dare to consider, but the more terrifying they were, the harder it was to resist thinking about them. Those horrifying speculations were like bubbles, aggressively occupying his mind, ultimately bursting one by one, leaving behind a gory reality for Hamish.
“After Miss Powell delivered a stillborn baby, she continued to bleed uncontrollably. We attempted to stop the bleeding, but her clotting function was abnormal, and her uterus detached. We need to remove it immediately…”
As though recalling everything she had witnessed inside, the nurse’s expression tightened, fear evident in her eyes.
Hamish staggered, his back pressing firmly against the wall before he steadied himself. “How… how could this happen…”
Hamish shook his head in disbelief, murmuring to himself, his ears ringing, unable to hear anything clearly…
