His vision blurred for a moment. He wondered if Elisa felt the same way he did during those four years when he forced her to divorce him. Was her current state of mind similar to his back then?
What was even more ridiculous was that, whether it was those four years or the present, he had an inexplicable feeling that Elisa would never leave him. No matter how big of a mistake he made, he believed he could win her back.
He didn’t know where this self-righteous attitude of his came from; he could only say it was laughable.
“This marriage should have ended a long time ago.”
Hamish didn’t say a word. He silently organized the documents and handed them to Mr. Hunter.
Mr. Hunter flipped through the signed section, confirmed its accuracy, and put it in a folder for safekeeping.
He didn’t inquire further about the remaining matters. After all, it was a private affair, and he had handled numerous divorce cases where situations like this would change from wanting a divorce to not wanting one.
But now that the papers were signed, there should be no turning back.
After Mr. Hunter left, Hamish used the key to unlock the chain on Elisa’s ankle, relieving her foot of the burden of the missing link.
Elisa moved her feet a bit and climbed onto the bed, preparing to sleep. This night might be her last night of sleep.
Hamish took off his clothes and threw them on the floor. After quickly showering, he came out and got into bed, embracing Elisa tightly under the covers. It was as if he had to hold on to her with all his strength, fearing that she would disappear the moment he loosened his grip.
Elisa felt a bit suffocated by his tight embrace, and she sarcastically remarked, “Are you holding me like this because you want to make love to me and celebrate the divorce?”
Hamish pressed Elisa against his chest, and with a slight downward gaze, he could clearly see her face, including her lips, which had lost some color.
Elisa had always been insignificant in his heart, and he was confident that this woman wouldn’t disturb his state of mind. The analogy of a kite was perfect; everything about her was under his control. As long as he exerted enough force on the string in his hand, no matter how far she flew, he could pull her back. But now, the string in his hand had broken.
Things had come to this point, and he chose Lila, sacrificing Elisa. He couldn’t afford to think about it anymore; he was afraid he would soften and be unable to let go of Elisa.
“I will definitely save you, Elisa. Give me time. As soon as I find out where Lila is, I’ll go and rescue you. Don’t do anything foolish.” The scene of Elisa attempting suicide in the underground casino was still vivid in his mind.
“We have no relationship anymore. Instead of worrying about my life and death, you should spend more time coaxing Lila.”
Elisa wanted to sleep, but she couldn’t find a trace of sleepiness. She was engulfed in confusion, not knowing what awaited her during the day. She had left the wolf’s den only to enter the tiger’s lair. How could she escape?
She just wanted to die peacefully, but even such a simple wish couldn’t be fulfilled by fate.
Suddenly, it started raining outside. The sound of rain was pitter-pattering, and the temperature would drop once the rain stopped.
Thinking about tomorrow, Elisa was afraid. She was terrified of the pain, both physical and psychological. In just a few months, Elisa had experienced the ups and downs of life, with absurd and melodramatic events happening to her one after another.
She had believed that she had built an impenetrable fortress, immune to all harm. But Hamish, with a single slap, had pushed her into a dangerous situation. The despair she felt was not just the fear of falling into hell, but also the despair of being unable to control her own destiny.
“Hamish, have you ever thought that Lila orchestrated all of this just to get rid of me and be with you?”
“Impossible. I checked, and the other party even sent me a video.” Hamish immediately dismissed the idea without hesitation.
Hamish’s affection for Lila was like a dog seeing excrement, Elisa sneered inwardly.
“I’ve always wondered why you would like Lila.”
Hamish paused for a moment. “Six years ago, she risked her life to save me.” He had never told anyone about this.
“Six years ago?”
Hamish slowly recounted the events that happened six years ago. He seemed skilled in everything, but he had one fatal flaw-he was afraid of water and couldn’t swim.
Six years ago, one night, he accidentally fell into the water and lost consciousness. Lila saved him.
AsElisa listened to Hamish’s account of being rescued from drowning six years ago, her gaze deep and seemingly lost in a memory.
