“Stop the car.”
The driver stopped the car, and Hamish opened the door, holding an umbrella as he got out.
The rainy night sky was pitch black, and the drizzle fell like silk under the dim yellow streetlights. Lila wore a knee-length skirt, revealing slender legs. The coldness spread from her legs to her whole body, causing her to shiver.
“Why are you here?”
Hamish’s words were colder than the chilly wind outside. Lila’s eyes showed a hint of hurt. Since when had Hamish changed? He used to hold her hand and care for her when she felt cold, but now he only asked, “Why are you here?”
“I have something important to tell you.” Lila’s voice sounded hoarse and unusual. She cleared her throat and asked, “Can I come in?”
Hamish looked at the villa. The lights were still on, just like usual, but they weren’t left on by Elisa.
Hamish nodded and turned to walk towards the front gate.
Lila had been crouching under the eaves for a while, and her legs felt numb and weak. Seeing that Hamish didn’t pay any attention to her, she stood up, tapped her high heels, and followed him into the house.
After closing the door, Lila took off her high heels and took out a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet.
Ariella had already gone to rest, and the living room felt empty. Hamish poured two cups of hot water and handed one to Lila when she entered.
“Thank you.” Lila’s health wasn’t good, and after being exposed to the cold wind outside for a few hours, she felt dizzy.
She drank half a cup of hot water, and a warm sensation spread from her stomach to her whole body, making her feel much warmer.
“How long have you been waiting?”
“Since six o’clock.”
That meant she had been waiting for nearly four hours. Hamish remained unmoved. “Couldn’t you have said whatever important thing it is over the phone?”
“You didn’t answer the phone.” Elisa sat on the sofa, holding a cup with lowered eyelashes, sounding somewhat aggrieved. “And, I haven’t seen you in a long time. Don’t you miss me, Hamish?”
Hamish leaned back on the sofa, his gaze brushing over her skirt. He lit a cigarette, showing no emotion. “Tell me what it is. Finish speaking quickly, and I’ll have the driver send you back.”
Seeing his cold and unyielding attitude, Lila had nowhere to vent her grievances. She felt extremely tired and suddenly lost the desire to please him.
“Last night, Elisa called me and said she wants to divorce you. She asked me to testify that you cheated on her.”
Upon hearing this, Hamish’s pent-up annoyance surged within him. He pressed his thin lips together, a fierce look appearing between his brows.
“Hamish, Elisa no longer loves you. She’s clearly forcing a divorce on you. Why don’t you agree? Or… have you fallen in love with her?”
“I haven’t.” Hamish blurted out without thinking.
“Then tell me what you mean. Why won’t you divorce her and keep her by your side? Do you know how difficult you’re making it for me?”
“Do you know what they say about me online? They say I’m the third party who’s destroying your relationship. I’m the mistress, the one who can’t be seen in the light. But why? Clearly, I’m the one who’s been by your side all along. Clearly, you promised to take care of me, to marry me. Are all those promises meaningless now?” Sentence after sentence poured out from Lila’s mouth, tears welling up in her eyes.
Hamish lowered his gaze, staring at the cup on the coffee table. “Since you feel so troubled, let’s end it.”
The lights in the living room were too bright, giving a feeling that all emotions had nowhere to hide.
