Elisa knew that she had completely severed ties with the Bakers. There was only a business relationship left between them, devoid of any other emotions.
Hamish drove away those who loved her, leaving her isolated and helpless. The most significant things in her life were indulging in food and being loved. Hamish wanted to tame her like a toy, making her dependent on him.
The Baker Group had suffered heavy losses in business over the past few months. It was said that they had offended Hamish. Now, the Burns Group took the initiative to cooperate with them, dispelling the rumors. It wouldn’t be long before the Baker Group returned to its original state.
Elisa calmed down and felt relieved after signing the contract. The weight on her heart lifted.
Days went by in an orderly manner. In the blink of an eye, half a month had passed. Elisa worked at the Burns Group, and the man who was busy with work all day somehow found time to watch her. He called her for meals every day, they went home together, slept together, and went to work together. Their life was routine, coupled with taking medication on time. Elisa’s illness rarely flared up for such a long time.
They seemed like a loving couple, completely different from what was reported in the past. Elisa didn’t know that she and Hamish were already privately referred to by the employees as the “model couple,” who had been loving each other for years, becoming more and more affectionate, setting an example for others.
On this day, Elisa went to the hospital for a check-up. She was in good spirits and showed no signs of an impending illness. Hattie gave her the medicine sent by Micah and drew five tubes of blood.
“You’ve been resting well this month, and your complexion has improved,” Hattie remarked.
Elisa instinctively touched her face and replied, “It’s alright.”
“Just maintain this condition. Are you still coughing up blood?” Hattie asked.
“I coughed up once two weeks ago, with some blood, but not as much as before.”
“That’s good,” Hattie nodded and paused before saying, “Hamish came with you today.”
“He didn’t,” Elisa replied.
“That’s fortunate.”
Elisa hadn’t reacted yet when Hattie suddenly stood up. “There’s someone who has been waiting for you at the hospital for a month.”
Who would wait for her at the hospital for a month? Elisa racked her brains but couldn’t come up with any clues. It was only when Hattie made a phone call and waited for a few minutes that hurried footsteps could be heard outside the door.
The door was half-closed, and Elisa looked through the crack to see the person standing outside-it was Autumn.
Autumn had run all the way here, afraid that he would be late if Elisa left. He took a few deep breaths, wiped the sweat off his forehead, and awkwardly knocked on the door.
Hattie gestured with her eyes to Elisa.
After hesitating for a moment, Elisa got up and opened the door. Autumn was a head taller than her.
Elisa tilted her head slightly and asked, “Have you been waiting for me at the hospital all this time?”
A man is prone to blushing, and Autumn’s face turned somewhat red. He took a step back before giving a heavy “Mm.”
“Why did you wait for me? Is there something important? Why didn’t you call me?” She fired three questions in quick succession.
Autumn wasn’t quick-witted and had a slow response time. He hesitated even for straightforward questions. “You said before that I shouldn’t contact you. If I contacted you, you wouldn’t respond.”
Elisa was taken aback, remembering that she did say that to Autumn.
“Why did you wait for me at the hospital, then?”
Autumn explained, “I brought you here before… There’s someone you know here.” He had originally intended to find that doctor, Micah, to inquire about the situation. But when he arrived, he found out that Micah had already left. If he hadn’t bumped into Hattie, he wouldn’t have known how long he would have blindly waited.
Autumn’s thoughts were easy to guess, and everything he was thinking was written all over his face.
He was truly foolish, to the point where Elisa felt embarrassed to call him that. His behavior was similar to waiting for something to fall into his lap. After he had brought her here once, he believed that she would come again, so he simply waited for her every day at the hospital.
Elisa turned her head and glanced at Hattie. Hattie shrugged helplessly, clearly at a loss about what to do with this person.
Autumn was not talkative and was always aloof, not knowing how to start a conversation. The fact that he took theinitiative to find Elisa was already surprising.
Hattie interjected, “Should I leave you two alone to chat?”
Elisa shook her head. “No need. If a patient comes looking for you later, what will you do?” She turned to Autumn and said, “Come in and have a seat.”
Originally, she had planned to take the medicine and go back home. But now that she had encountered Autumn, she couldn’t go back so easily.
Glancing at the time, it was already one o’clock in the afternoon. Elisa asked, “Have you eaten?”
Autumn pursed his lips and shook his head, his gaze burning intensely.
Even with Elisa’s composure, she felt uncomfortable under his intense gaze. Looking at Autumn’s expression, she realized that her previous words were in vain.
There were many things she couldn’t understand, like right now. She couldn’t understand why Autumn would like her. But then again, wasn’t her liking Hamish just as perplexing?
