Chapter 88: Slander

Book:Mr. Burns Is Killing His Wife Published:2024-6-4

This was completely different from what she had expected. Lila felt a sense of urgency. While wondering why Hamish hadn’t returned yet, she couldn’t help but wish to push Elisa down the stairs.
A pregnant woman’s body is fragile, and a fall could result in heavy bleeding, leading to death. This malicious thought grew heavier in her heart.
At that moment, the sound of a car engine outside the door caught their attention. Elisa’s expression changed when she saw Hamish return home unexpectedly at noon.
If he came back now, she wouldn’t be able to go to the orphanage. Elisa felt a wave of disappointment, accompanied by a sense of unease that veered off track.
However, Elisa was accustomed to accepting reality quickly. She was about to turn around and head back to the bedroom, ignoring Lila, when suddenly her wrist was tightly grabbed.
Elisa turned her head and saw Lila looking at her with a sinister expression, her eyes as deep as a venomous snake.
“Lila, haven’t you had enough?” Elisa had suffered losses from Lila before. Although this woman usually seemed as innocent as a rabbit, who knows what wicked ideas she might have in mind.
Whenever Lila came near her, it never meant anything good. Normally, they kept their heads down and avoided each other, minding their own business. But now, Lila suddenly approached. Elisa’s heart raced. She was pregnant now and would have an abortion in a few days. She couldn’t afford any mishaps.
Engaging in a dispute on the stairs was already dangerous, and coupled with Lila’s sinister intentions, it was easy to fall.
By this time, Hamish had already entered the house. Elisa stepped back, but Lila’s grip on her wrist grew stronger, and she couldn’t break free.
Lila suddenly leaned closer to Elisa’s ear, her expression malevolent. “Elisa, no one knows about the wild seed in your belly, right?”
Something flashed through Elisa’s mind, but before she could grasp it, she saw a glint in Lila’s eyes, and she pulled Elisa’s hand back.
Elisa quickly grabbed onto the railing of the stairs, but Lila suddenly let go of her hand. Unable to maintain her balance, she fell backward and tumbled down from the upper floor.
“Lila!”
Elisa followed the sound and saw Hamish entering with a gloomy face. He hurriedly rushed to Lila’s side and lifted her from the ground.
From upstairs, Elisa couldn’t see Lila’s condition clearly, but she could see Hamish’s dark face and his fierce, hawk-like gaze that sent a shiver down her spine.
So, that’s how it was. Elisa had underestimated Lila’s ruthless methods. It made sense. Back then, she had caused a car accident and attempted suicide by swallowing sleeping pills. There was probably nothing left for her to fear.
Her gaze shifted to the surveillance monitor behind her. With the surveillance footage, Hamish couldn’t easily accuse her.
However, she couldn’t be certain in her heart. After Lila’s failed suicide attempt, didn’t she use just a few words to convince Hamish of her guilt?
Hamish had made an appointment with Lila to come back at noon today, but he didn’t expect to witness Elisa pushing Lila. He carefully examined Lila’s body and found no wounds other than bruises, but falling from such a height could easily result in fractures.
“What happened?”
Lila leaned against Hamish’s chest, tears welling up in her eyes, looking pitiful and causing a pang in his heart. She glanced fearfully at Elisa before hesitantly speaking, “It was me, I accidentally slipped and fell. It has nothing to do with Elisa. Please don’t think too much about it.”
Her explanation was worse than not explaining at all. There was a mat placed specifically at the stairs to prevent slipping, so how could Lila claim that she slipped by accident?
Almost instinctively, Hamish’s gaze turned towards Elisa, his face darkening. “Did you push Lila down?”
He wasn’t asking; he had already concluded. Once again, Elisa felt a sense of desolation in her heart, but she wore an exaggerated smile on her face that didn’t match her true feelings. “Hamish, didn’t you hear her say that she slipped by herself? What does it have to do with me?”
Lila rested her head on Hamish’s chest, quietly shedding tears, as if enduring grievances. Hamish felt annoyed by her crying.
Mrs. Gordon happened to be present as well. Hamish asked, “Mrs. Gordon, did you see anything just now?”
Mrs. Gordon lowered her head and replied, “I was in the dining room at the time and didn’t see anything, but I heard Miss Powell insulting Miss Morris.”
Hamish’s gaze grew colder. Mrs. Gordon hesitated, her lips moving as if she had something difficult to say.
Suppressing his anger, Hamish spoke in a low voice, “Tell me!”
Mrs. Gordon respectfully lowered her head and said, “Miss Powell said that as long as she occupies Mrs. Burns’ position, Miss Morris will forever be a hidden mistress.”
