After five days of recovery at home, Elisa’s wound had started to scar. It didn’t hurt, but it was slightly itchy. At this rate of healing, she would be able to go out for job interviews in two days.
Hamish went to the hospital to pick up Lila and emphasized once again before leaving to make sure she had a good attitude.
Elisa agreed verbally but didn’t really care. At five o’clock in the afternoon, she began preparing dinner as usual.
Mrs. Gordon was still assisting her in the kitchen, while Elisa took charge of cooking. It took quite some time to prepare three dishes and a soup, and by the time she finished, it was almost eight o’clock.
The doorbell rang, and Elisa called out to Mrs. Gordon to answer it. She waited for a while but didn’t receive any response. Elisa took off her apron and went to open the door, her injuries slowing her down. As she opened the door, she first saw Hamish, and then her gaze shifted to Lila standing behind him.
Lila was obviously still afraid of her, cowering behind Hamish and cautiously looking at Elisa.
Standing at the doorway, Elisa smiled and said, “Lila, congratulations on being discharged from the hospital.”
Lila nodded with lowered eyes, remaining silent. She looked so aggrieved that Elisa thought she had been bullying her again.
Elisa glanced at Lila, taking in her appearance, and suddenly said, “Fortunately, you took sleeping pills. If you had cut your wrists, you probably wouldn’t have woken up after more than an hour.”
Elisa’s words were like needles, targeting the most vulnerable spot in Lila’s heart.
Elisa was not a saint. All her injuries were caused by Lila, so she couldn’t act magnanimous or pretend that everything was fine.
Lila’s expression changed, and she looked at Hamish. Seeing his normal expression, she felt relieved and said, “It was my impulsiveness that caused you trouble.”
Elisa chuckled and said, “It’s not trouble. If you had lost too much blood, that would have been trouble. I might have had to donate blood to you.”
Hamish pushed her gently as they entered the house. The force wasn’t strong, but it caused Elisa, with her injured leg, to stagger forward and almost fall.
His tone carried a warning as he said, “Let it go. Let’s go inside and eat.”
Elisa didn’t say anything, but Lila, who was walking behind them, suddenly acted like a good person. She tugged at Hamish’s sleeve and said in a gentle voice, “Elisa is also concerned about me. You promised me earlier on the way not to get angry.”
Elisa walked into the dining room, her footsteps faltering upon hearing this scripted line from Lila. It was a pity she didn’t pursue an acting career, considering how well she acted.
The hatred in Elisa’s eyes hadn’t had a chance to retreat before Hamish, who had just entered, noticed it.
Hamish stared at Elisa with a cold gaze. In truth, he wasn’t particularly angry. Pushing Elisa was just a warning, telling her not to be petty. After all, they would be living with Lila in the future, and he didn’t want her to cause unnecessary conflicts.
“Lila isn’t holding it against you, but you’re throwing a tantrum here.”
Elisa pretended not to hear and washed her hands before serving herself a bowl of soup.
The meal proceeded calmly, with only the sounds of utensils clinking.
After dinner, Hamish and Lila went out for a walk, while Elisa sat on the sofa, reading a book, seeming unnecessary.
After Mrs. Gordon finished washing the dishes, she hesitated for a moment and asked, “Miss Powell, do you need me to help you upstairs?”
“No, I can manage.” Elisa put down her book and slowly made her way up to the second floor.
Her leg was now capable of walking up and down stairs, so going out to work shouldn’t be a problem.
As soon as Elisa reached the upstairs landing, she heard some commotion downstairs. Leaning against the railing, she looked down and saw that Hamish and Lila had returned from their walk.
Mrs. Gordon had prepared some lemon water and handed it to Lila. It seemed like a perfectly normal gesture, but Elisa sensed something unusual.
Mrs. Gordon’s attitude towards her and Lila was completely different.
