Chapter Forty two

I was starting to wonder how someone could be this cute, yet dumb. This wasn’t the right time to think about his beauty, but seriously, he was handsome. His sapphire blue eyes, pointed nose, and small lips, they all caught my attention. His full eyebrows quirked at me, which made me realize that I had been staring at him for a while.
“I asked a question.” My voice held so much huskiness, anger, and a bit of shame. I was embarrassed. “Do you need something? Holding your maid’s hand is crazy.”
“Oh. Sorry.” He released my hand. Of course, his apology was filled with so much sarcasm.
I glared a little. “Thank you. So, can I take my leave now?”
“So much confidence, woman.” He put his hands behind him, fixing his gaze at me. “Hope you know I’m the boss? This isn’t the way to speak with one’s boss.”
I scoffed. “Sorry, sir. And, one’s boss shouldn’t hold his maid that way.”
He sniggered. For some reason, he took a step close, his tall height kind of intimidating. “So, may I know the reason you decided to work here? I’d thought you never wanted to see me anymore.”
“What I’m doing here is none of your business. I’m your maid, nothing else,” I clarified.
“Don’t say it that way.” He took my wrist, which made me gasp. He kept smirking, those eyes glinting as if he had gotten an award. “Tell me the truth. I really don’t wanna believe you. Do you wanna come to me, but you’re only doing it indirectly? See, I don’t mind accepting you in any way. Don’t try to act smart, okay? Don’t pretend like you—”
“That’s enough.” I jerked my wrist from his hand, and took a step backwards. My voice was sharp, my head boiling in rage. “This is why I think you’re filthy. Well, I don’t care if you’re the boss. See, you’d better stop your madness. Holding a lady without her permission is totally wrong.”
He glared. “You’re lecturing me in my own house?”
“See…” I frowned even more. Raising my hand, I pointed my index finger at him, my teeth clenched. “If anything, don’t play with my dignity. It sucks. Not everyone cares about your money. I came here because I needed the job. If I wanted your filthy self, I’d have gone to your office to seduce you. But no, I chose to respect my dignity. And, if you try to play with it, you’ll see my wrath.”
He scoffed. “Do you—”
“That’s enough.” I swallowed, and looked away. “If you do this again, I won’t be cool with you. Thanks for hiring me. Now, get out.”
Oops. I had ordered him. Well, whatever.
“We shall see who’s the boss,” he stated. Glaring and cursing at himself, he walked past me, and left immediately.
As soon as he did so, I shut my eyes, and breathed out in relief. I felt very uneasy and upset, but I definitely wouldn’t let that affect me. Opening my eyes, planning to leave, I halted in my tracks when I spotted this crazy lady, Sherri. Anytime I saw her, an unexplainable fury always ran in my head.
What was she doing here? Had she come to haunt me again?
As usual, she was pretty, but that didn’t stop her from being dumb.
“Hi, sister.” Like the proud lady she was, she sashayed into the living room, and stood in front of me.
I rolled my eyes, and sighed. “Is there something you need?”
She was silent. Her eyes were scanning my body, her face squeezed as if she was disgusted. Sensing her body language, I knew she was up to no good. Soon, she would definitely sputter some ugly and vile words.
“Hm…” She wrapped her arms around her chest, a smirk forming on her tiny lips. “Surprised to see you in this outfit. Are you like… acting a movie or something? Cause, this is extremely awkward.”
Again, I rolled my eyes. “I know I’m not explainable to you. But, for some reason, I just feel like I should tell you.” I put my hands on my waist, staring at her with so much apathy dashing in my facial expression. “Well, for your info, I work here. I’m James Robert’s maid.”
“Sweet Jesus!” She placed her hand on her chest, threw her head back, and burst out laughing. Definitely, I had expected her to react this way. “You’re a maid? My gosh!”
What was funny? This woman was such a lunatic.
“Seems like you never have anything to say.” The band around my bun was loosing, so I quickly tied it properly, still glaring at her. “Guess I’ll be leaving now.”
“Wait, wait.” She stopped laughing. She resumed simpering, and just glued her eyes to mine. “How can Ryan’s girlfriend be a maid? Are you for real? Huh?”
“It’s not your business.” I dug my hands into the pocket of my gown, clearing my throat. “Focus on your life, then maybe you’ll become sensible.”
She chortled. “Well, since you work here now, I’ll have enough time with Ryan. I’ll eventually get him back.”
“Good luck on that, man stealer.” I smirked too.
“Anyway…” she cleared her throat. “Sorry to know your parents had an accident.”
I furrowed my eyes at her. “Who told you about it?”
“Uh, um…” She laughed weirdly, and cleared her throat again. “Saw you at the hospital that night. Had come to get some medicine. And, what if Ryan told me? Why do you care?”
“Whatever.”
She inhaled hard. Attempting to walk past me, I held her arm back. The corner of my eyes caught her glancing at me, as she stood beside me. I released her arm, and sighed.
“Please, do this one thing for me,” I said.
“What?”
I swallowed. “Don’t tell Ryan that I work for James. I haven’t said it to him. Please.”
She giggled. That cunning giggle. “Okay. It’s a deal.”
Saying that, she walked past me, walked towards the stairs, and left my vicinity.
I put my hand on my chest, violently squeezed my cloth in my palm, as I held back my tears. I really felt guilty that I wasn’t telling Ryan about James. And now, Sherri had to see me working here. Well, it would be fine.
Turning around, I headed back to the room Vicki and I had been cleaning.
