“Elisa, you’ve said so much. You made up having late-stage stomach cancer just to divorce me. You’ll go to any lengths for a divorce, even conspiring with the hospital to trick me! That proves Elisa’s guilt in one sentence.”
Hamish angrily threw the stack of examination reports in his hand onto Elisa’s hand. The needle stuck in the back of her hand was pushed out by the vein, and liquid dripped down Elisa’s hand in a steady stream.
The bandaged area quickly turned red with blood, but Elisa seemed to feel no pain at all. She opened her eyes, and they had regained their calm.
She looked at Hamish’s violent eyes. Without a doubt, if she wasn’t half dead and lying in bed right now, Hamish would have likely slapped her already.
She turned her head to look at the examination report beside her, and picked it up with trembling hands, slowly flipping through page by page.
She really hoped these few “healthy” examination reports actually existed.
“At that time, only you were qualified to sign the surgery agreement for me,” Elisa said with difficulty. “I told the doctor I had late-stage stomach cancer because I was afraid you wouldn’t sign the critical condition notice if it was minor. The doctor wouldn’t treat me without it.”
She could hold back the tremor in her voice, but not the sourness in her nose. She kept her eyelids half-lowered, afraid Hamish would see her blurry eyes.
Elisa took a deep breath: “But you’re right, getting a divorce was also a reason. Mrs. Burns is who I don’t want to be anymore. Now you’ve tormented me until I have stomach bleeding. Who knows if I’ll really get stomach cancer before long.”
“At least you value your life,” Hamish said.
“Who doesn’t value their life?” Elisa retorted. “Didn’t your Lila? If I remember correctly, I’ve donated blood to her no less than fifty times in the past four years.”
Hamish’s eyelids drooped as he said coldly, “Elisa, are you saying this now to portray yourself as a victim? Donating blood was voluntary. Our prenuptial agreement stated it very clearly. What right do you have to bring up how much blood you donated to Lila!”
Yet he shields his sweetheart. Elisa forcefully clenched the bedsheet under the covers, enduring immense pain in her heart.
“Hamish, I did it voluntarily because I liked you, but you can’t abuse me in every possible way just because I liked you! I’ve given enough blood. Being your wife these four years, I’ve had enough too. Whoever you want to be with from now on, go ahead. I, Elisa, don’t care anymore.”
“No chance for a divorce. If you don’t want your dad to be comfortable in prison, you’d better listen.”
Elisa’s body stiffened as she stared at him in disbelief. Her lips trembled as she spoke after a moment: “What are you going to do to my dad? You clearly said you’d let him off.”
Hamish looked at her scornfully. Elisa was not unbreakable. On the contrary, she had too many weaknesses she could not let go of. These were all her fatal flaws. As long as he had a firm grip on them, she could never escape him in this lifetime.
The corners of his lips curled up slightly as Hamish gently pinched her chin. His tone was gentle yet icy cold. “I said that? Where’s the proof?”
Did Hamish want to go back on his word? On what grounds?
Elisa’s eyes gradually reddened. Her eyelashes trembled like a frightened rabbit. She gritted her teeth tightly, so forcefully it was as if she would bite through them completely.
“Hamish!”
“Elisa, I only promised to spare your dad from the death penalty. But who knows what could happen to him in prison. You know there are all kinds of people in prison. Your dad got saddled with such a huge criminal case, he might be sharing a cell with other convicted murderers. Missing arms and legs. It’s not something I can control.”
He used the calmest words to make the most vicious threats. His thumb gently caressed Elisa’s fair chin, his gaze very scornful, as if mocking her naivety.
Elisa’s already pale face suddenly became transparent. She lowered her eyelids to look at the hand Hamish had on her chin. Tears streamed down uncontrollably as she bit down hard on her teeth, so forcefully it was as if she could bite through them completely.
This was the man she had loved for sixteen years, deceiving her over and over again, yet she was still foolish enough to believe him.
