Chapter Nine

I scanned my eyes around, looking for Praise. In a short while, I saw her standing by the other side of the mall, just opposite Tracie and me. She was smirking, and I knew she was ready to do something stupid.
“Oh, help! Please, do something!” Sherri kept hopping around like a maniac. Of course, it was hard for anyone to help her out. Would anyone want to open her panty only to kill the cockroach in it? Well, in fact, a couple of people were filming her.
She threw her hands into her hair, her face squeezed like she was weeping hard. Her butt poked backwards, her hands dashing into her miniskirt, probably trying to get the cockroach.
She rolled her eyes around, seeming like she was searching for something. And, the moment her eyes landed on the corridor which led to the restroom, she gasped. All of a sudden, Tracie disappeared. I didn’t know where she went, but all I knew was that she stepped backwards.
Sherri was about rushing over to the corridor, but then, Tracie appeared. To my surprise, Tracie was holding a tray of coffee, and was even wearing a fez cap. As Sherri was running, Tracie bumped into her on purpose, ensuring the coffee spilled over Sherri’s body.
“Oh my gosh!” Sherri cried. At this point, I laughed. But, it seemed like the cockroach was no longer in her panty. “You fool! You’ve ruined my cloth! What am I gonna do now?!”
Praise and Tracie gestured to each other, and in one second, a ball bumped against Sherri’s head, which made her trip backwards. Yes, Praise threw the ball. Sherri was in scarpin shoes, which was one of the reasons she was moving this unstably.
“Ah! My forehead!” She cried further. The moment she tripped backwards a little more, Praise crouched, and tossed a banana peel towards her.
As if Praise had targeted the spot the banana peel landed, Sherri stupidly slipped on it. Her eyes bulged open, her jaw dropped, her legs moving as if they had gotten electrocuted. Though she had tried so much to remain steady, the heel on her shoe screeched against the hard marble floor of the mall, which made her fall like a dead mango tree.
Oh yes, I threw my head back, burst out laughing.
Though she was already on the floor, groaning in pain, Tracie and Praise threw two small balls at her, and gave each other a thumbs up. These girls were so, so crazy. And yeah, everyone was laughing at Sherri.
They hurried over to me, hit their fists against each other, praising themselves. And then, they laughed.
“Gosh, you guys really need to learn to stop this craziness. For goodness’ sake, you’re moms,” I said, amidst crazy laughter.
“Yeah, whatever.” Tracie took a deep breath when she stopped laughing. “I just couldn’t let her go freely. She’s such a dick. I haven’t ever seen anyone seem so mean.”
I smiled. “I’m used to her rudeness. In fact, Ryan knows we’re enemies. He ignores us when we argue.”
“So crazy,” Tracie remarked.
“We should get going now?” Praise suggested. She was already holding the cart. When did she get that?
I nodded with a smile.
In only a few seconds, we got to the cashier. As soon as we paid for everything we had bought, the cashier began packing them into shopping bags. Leaning over the counter, I smiled. And, just moving my eyes around, I saw her again.
Her hair was completely shattered, and of course, she looked like a mad monster.
“You asshole!” She grunted. If we were in a cartoon world, smoke would probably be eluding her ears already.
I sighed. “What? You haven’t been embarrassed enough?”
“I swear, you’ll pay for this,” she menaced. As usual. Her eyes dunked in tears. She rolled her fingers in a fist, clenching her jaw. “Do you realize that you’ve ruined my reputation? I’d only asked you to leave my guy, but you went as far as doing this to me.”
“Pi-lease.” I scoffed. “I didn’t do anything. Yeah, my girls did it, but so what? You know what? I think you should learn to think before uttering words.”
A tear left her eye. “You really don’t know how dangerous I am. I’m influential, you know? I can squander your life in a sec.”
I sneered at her. It was an intimidating sneer. “Let’s see how it goes. After all, you are nothing more than the creepy Sherri Dustin.”
“Yeah right. See you later, bitch. Get ready to be dealt with.” Spitting that out, she turned around, stormed out of here immediately.
To be frank, I felt a bit threatened. But, the truth was, there was nothing she could really do. It wasn’t like I was guilty. I wasn’t interested in her man, so what was she fussing about?
Soon, the cashier was done packing our stuff. As we walked to Tracie’s car, I could tell that she and Praise were worried about me, but I was only trying as much as possible to act cool.
Getting to the parking lot, Praise and I stood by a red SUV Jeep, waiting for Tracie to get her car. I sighed hard, and looked up at the sky. It seemed like it would rain soon.
“You think we should—” I was about to speak, but suddenly, my words got stuck in my throat. A sudden fear and pain washed through me, my heart feeling heavy. I wasn’t the first person to be heartbroken or ditched, but this pain still affected me. I had thought I wouldn’t ever see him again.
He halted in his position, staring blankly at me. “Serene?”
“Oh, hi, Ralph.” I swallowed my tears. Crying in front of him was the last thing I wanted. I needed him to think I wasn’t affected by his betrayal. “Didn’t know you’re still around. How’re you doing?”
He took a step close. “Do you mind if we speak for a while? I’d really like to say something to you.”
“Excuse me?” I narrowed my eyes at him.
He pressed his lips against each other, scratching the back of his neck. “I really need to say something to you. I… I think I’m ready to set things straight.”
Wait, what was this? A joke? Not only had he asked for a break up in a twinkle of an eye, now he wanted to “set things straight”? Was this guy nuts?
I scoffed, blinking to hold my tears. “What am I? A joke? Or a toy who’s emotionless?”
He clenched his jaw. “Don’t start this now. I know you really can’t live without me, so let’s just work things out.”
“Are you for real?” I furrowed my eyes at him, totally dazed.
For some very stupid and vague reason, he frowned. He twitched his neck sideways, sighed out loud. “See, I’m not in for this. Let’s—”
“You’re mean,” I said in a whisper. A tear escaped my eye, which made me whimper. “You’re heartless too. You’re dominant. You’re very unfair.”
“Pardon?” He shot a harder glare at me.
“You know what?” I sniffled, trying to plaster a smile on my lips. “I’m glad our relationship ended. You really don’t deserve me. Until now, I haven’t noticed that you speak in a blatant way. Even to a person you think you like? How crazy and disrespectful.”
“Serene, you’re—”
“It’s just over. I really won’t take you back. Move on, okay? We’re not meant for each other.”
“This isn’t—”
“Goodnight.” I cut him off completely. Saying that, I walked away, Praise following behind me.
Now, my day ended up being miserable. First, it was Sherri. And then, I had had to see Ralph too. Thinking about him, I felt too hurt. I instantly realized that I was yet to move on.
This was upsetting, but really, it would pass.
