Chapter 77

“Nurse Terra, you may leave,” Neuer dismissed the nurse to her greatest glee. No words were exchanged between the two people in the office. He stood up, picked his suitcase and made to leave the office.
“Neuer? Are you ignoring me?”
Nelly stopped and stared at her.
“What do you want? Vera, get out of my office.”
“Really? Are you still angry with me? What’s the meaning of all these? I’ve already said I’m sorry.”
Neuer ignored her but she didn’t give up. She walked up to him and wrapped her arms around his hips.
Vera was Neuer’s ex girlfriend. He loved her dearly but she left him for another man. According to her, she wanted to travel outside the country and that new man promised to do that for her. Neuer pleaded but she was long gone.
Now, she was back, and professing her love to him.
“I’m sorry, Neuer. I’m very sorry. I love you, please, don’t leave me again,” she cried. Tears ran freely down her face. She knew Neuer couldn’t stand a crying woman. It made him weak.
“Can you stop crying? Stop it!” he yelled but she continued, unabated.
“Please, I returned to the country just for you. I don’t have anywhere to stay, it’s getting dark but I came back regardless, because I miss you, dearly. Please, baby.”
She clung unto his waist like a leach and made it difficult for him to walk away. She kept crying until his compassionate heart gave in.
“Fine. It’s fine. Come with me.”
She wiped her tears and flashed him a killer smile which he didn’t return. They both got into the car and Neuer drove off.
“So, tell me, how have you been love? I’ve missed you.”
No response.
“I’m sorry that I left when I did. I was stupid. I missed you every minute but then, I didn’t have your number again. I sent you several emails but you never responded to any of them. You don’t even know the stress I had to go through to find out your place of work.”
Still no response.
“I did all this because I love you,” she said and leaned close to him.
“Stop this. I’m driving, don’t distract me, okay?”
Vera pouted and folded her arms across her chest.
“We are here,” Neuer announced.
“Huh? Where are we?” Vera asked, looking around her. She didn’t recognise that place, it looked like a hotel.
“What does it look like? It’s a hotel, a place for you to spend the night.”
“Neuer? What’s the meaning of this?”
“I’ll inform the management that you are there and I’ll foot the expenses for this night. You can find your way before this time tomorrow. Good night,” he stated flatly and pressed the control button for the car door. The door opened and he waited for the other occupant to leave but she didn’t move an inch.
“Vera, can you please get down? I have my own business to attend to.”
Vera moved closer and leaned in to give him a kiss.
“Stop that. Out of my car!” he said in a voice that he didn’t believe was his. He had long forgotten about her and didn’t want to have anything to do with her. Moreover, he was in love with Nelly and didn’t want to have anything come between them. Vera took her bag and walked down, embarrassed. She didn’t expect Neuer to react like that. She thought he would take her to his house for the night. The man she met today was very different from the man she used to know. He used to be all over her and couldn’t do without her. Now, he could comfortably yell at her without feeling bad! There was great need to intensify her efforts. She wasn’t going to give up until she got her man back!
Neuer pressed the control button again and the door was shut. He drove home quietly. Upon getting home, his phone beeped and he took it out to check the message. It was not a saved number but he guessed who it was immediately.
‘Thanks baby for the room. Safe journey home and good night. Dream about me. Love xoxo’
He wondered how Vera got to know his whereabouts, place of work and even his number. She must have done a lot of research. She really didn’t give up so easily. Neuer waited all night long for Nelly’s message but didn’t get any from her. He however stayed hopeful.
“Here’s your flight ticket. First flight, tomorrow. Get ready.”
Amon’s words kept replaying inside her head. After they had reported a failed mission to Easton, he was very mad at them all. But he still maintained his stand and insisted that Aria returned with immediate effect to complete the task. He didn’t want any opposition from any Stratford.
He had even wanted Amon to come to the USA for the sole purpose of taking Nelly away from the face of the earth, but Amon thought otherwise. It would give them away easily. If Nelly should stumble on him in the country at any time, she might be forced to raise brows. Easton finally accepted that Amon stayed back to carry out other tasks. Amon had finally completed his duty for that period, and most importantly, with no traces. He couldn’t wait to have a huge sum transferred into his account for a job well done.
Easton’s men were at the airport to pick her up as soon as she landed. Her heart was beating really fast, she didn’t know what to expect. She was taken to the usual place where Easton stayed.
“Good…good…” she stammered as she looked at this man. He looked very terrifying and like the devil himself.
“Brave little rat! Are you done running your mouth? You dared to defy my orders and even went ahead to tell me to my face that I will do nothing!” Easton said flatly.
Aria dropped on her knees and pleaded for leniency.
“Too late!” Easton said.
Just as he said that, Aria heard a gun shot.
“Nooooooo!” she wailed and rolled on the floor.
