“Wh.. Wh.. what do you mean by that?”
“Wow. You’re stammering, that tells the answer. You are never short of words, my dear brother.”
“Don’t be unreasonable. I was only taken unawares. The question was unexpected. I mean, why will I do such a lowly thing?” Ivan defended.
“Well, I don’t know. I was watching your secretary’s every move closely and her acts were questionable. She spent time admiring you and…”
“Enough, Daisy. You should know before now that so many girls fawn upon your brother and he has a lot of secret admirers who long to have him in their arms. Drink your coffee before it gets cold. Enough of all these.”
“Noted man.”
For the next thirty minutes, the only noise that was heard was the lifting of the mug and it’s return to the saucer. Ivan went through the file in silence and sipped coffee occasionally. He picked his pen and wrote one or two things on the paper and closed the file.
“Okay. We are good to go.”
“Finally,” Daisy answered in excitement and sprang up from the chair.
The traffic light shone red and Ivan pressed the brakes.
“Ivan, do you know why my mum returned now?” Daisy seized the opportunity to ask.
“I don’t think I know. Is there a problem?”
“I want to know everything. I want to know why she left me without looking back only to return when I’m an adult. How does she expect me to accept her? She’s back to reopen old wounds. I grew up lonely, you were the only one who played with me outside the school environment. Grandfather loved Katty and she made him hate me. There was no mother to console me, I bore all alone and now, she suddenly appears to walk back into my life. No!”
“Easy dear. Take it one step at a time.”
“I want to know why she left, why she returned, who my father is, why he denied her, I want to know everything.”
“That’s going to be difficult,” Ivan replied with his eyes on the road. The traffic light was green now and the cars had started moving again.
“I know. That’s why I want to confide in you. I need your help, Ivan.”
“My help?”
“Yes. I’ll appreciate it if you do this for me.”
“What exactly do you want me to do for you?”
“What? That useless girl made it alive? What then did those lousy boys do?” Easton shouted. He had just received a message of the news released by the paparazzi from his informant.
“Grandfather, is there a problem?” Katty asked as she ran into the living room. She heard him shouting and came to find out what the matter was. Grandfather faked a smile to conceal his emotions.
“No, everything is fine. I’m okay, no cause for alarm.”
“But you look tensed,” Katty probed further. Easton wanted to ask her to go to a thousand demons for bothering him. In fact, if it were some other person, he would have said that without mincing words. But, it was Katty so he had to be extra nice.
“Not at all, dear child. There’s nothing wrong. You can return to your room.” Katty nodded and away she went. When he felt the coast was clear, he called a number.
“Is this information one hundred percent legit?”
“Yes boss, it is,” the other person answered over the phone.
“Okay.”
He ended the call and dialed another number.
“How dare you defy my orders!”
“I didn’t defy it.”
“Really, Ria. Then what happened?”
“Sir, she just didn’t show up at the airport. Maybe fate was on her side. She didn’t deserve to die too.”
“What nonsense! So, you deliberately let her go? Have you gone mad? Maybe I’ve been too lenient with you. You seem to have forgotten that I have your father here with me and any of your misdeeds can cost his life,” Easton threatened.
“You will do no such thing!” Aria Dean challenged to Easton’s greatest amazement.
“Are you talking back at me? I see that you have grown wings, maybe I will have to tame them. Apologize now before it gets too late or before I change my mind!”
“I still maintain my stand that you will do no such thing. How can you be so wicked? I’ve worked for you for so many years but all I get in return is your constant threats. Each time you use my father against me, it kills a part of me. Haven’t we paid the debt enough? Do you want to use us to satisfy your selfish needs, dreams and interest to the last drop of our blood? Why are you so evil?”
Easton laughed wickedly.
“It has gotten to a point where you now challenge me to my face. You had the effontery to disobey my orders, let the culprit go and you still stand there, running your mouth. This little girl, you don’t know what harm you are doing to yourself. Save for the fact that I need you to warm my bed, I could have wiped you off the face of the earth. Nevertheless, I’ll have you punished. Always remember that when ever I send you on a mission, you are in my territory and within eye zone. Your father will loose his life for this!”
Aria’s teeth could be heard clattering over the phone. She had lost all her courage. The more she tried to regain it, the more it deserted her.
Meanwhile, a car drove into the Lander’s compound and the only occupant of the car came down. He made his way to the door and opened it. Easton didn’t notice the movement at the door. He continued making his call.
“I swear if anything happens to my father, I will kill you!” Aria suddenly shouted.
“Haha. I can’t believe you are saying this to me. You have seventy two hours to return and take that woman and her daughter off the earth or you will replace them. Seventy two hours, or I’ll kill you myself. Your time starts now.”
Easton ended the call and was shocked to see someone standing beside him.
