Writer’s POV
What did he just say? Serena thought, staring at him doubtfully.
Did the king just say that he missed me? She turned to stare curiously at him but found a smirk on his face causing her eyes to widen as she quickly looked away.
What was he doing? What was going on?
“You know you just broke one of my rules. You don’t stare at your master’s eyes.” King Zed said, taking a sip from his coffee.
“I… I am sorry master, forgive me.” Serena apologized immediately.
“Of course. All I’ve been doing is forgiving you. Now go make me something to eat and be quick about it.” King Zed ordered dropping the cup on the table
“Yes master.” Serena bowed slightly before rushing out of the room.
The king’s gaze lingered on the door even after Serena left, he lifted his coffee to his lips once more.
“Happy now? I don’t like being nice, you know.” King Zed said to his wolf who snickered inside him.
“Yes, I’m happy.” Damon, his wolf snorted in reply.
Serena set out to work immediately she got to the kitchen, she wished so much that Isaac would remain at the castle but he had to go.
That was the deal she made with king Zed, being forever loyal for her brother’s and Kendrick’s life in exchange for their freedom.
She stared at the door of the kitchen, two huge guards stood there and waited for her to finish her cooking.
She forced her eyes back to what she was doing, sadness spreading through her as the thought of Isaac leaving. Worst was that she couldn’t bring herself to mind-link him either. She could only hope that he felt her pain and spoke to her.
The way she reacted earlier, was uncalled for and that Isaac must be confused and angry but she couldn’t help it, she had to let him go and live the rest of his life not stuck here in the castle for the rest of his life because of her.
As she tried to encourage herself to be strong that she was only doing what was right for her brother, a tear managed to escape her eyes, falling with a splash on the counter.
But she quickly wiped it away, with or without Isaac, she had to live. She sniffled, blocking all her thoughts to focus on the meal she cooked. In a few hours, she was serving them on a plate and on a tray.
She lifted the tray up and started walking out from the kitchen, the guard who had been watching her followed her swiftly.
She was passing by the sitting room side where she heard both Isaac and Kendrick’s voice, pausing, she turned to look at the direction their voice was coming from.
“What are you waiting for?” One of the huge guards behind her asked.
“Nothing.” She mumbled and continued walking away with the tray.
“Serena.” She heard Isaac call to her but didn’t turn to look at her. She bite her lower lip hard to prevent her from making a mistake.
When she got to the room King Zed was currently in, she knocked on the door and he beckoned her in.
The guard opened the door for her and she entered.
She kept the tray on the table there and took three steps back, away from the meal.
Her heart raced with fear but she kept a straight face, encouraging herself that she would get through this just the way Issac always encourages her.
Of course King Zed sensed the way she was feeling. He turned to look at her but pretended not to know a thing about what she was feeling.
“Go get me a glass of warm water.” King Zed ordered.
“Yes master.” Serena turned and left the room.
She walked lazily to the kitchen, and couldn’t find Isaac at the place she saw him last. She couldn’t smell his scent either, even his voice couldn’t be heard no matter how hard she listened.
The thought that she was going to spend her entire life in the castle without seeing her brother hit her hard again, tears gathered at the back of her eyes but she was determined not to cry.
All she ever did was cry but she wanted to be strong for once.
She took out a kettle, then poured clean water into it. She turned on the cooker and placed the kettle on the fire, standing beside it waiting for the water to heat up.
As she waited, her thoughts wandered to when she had first arrived at the castle. How she was uncomfortable around him, scared to be precise. His Beta aura alerted her and she thought of him as a danger even though he was only being nice.
How he continued being nice to her until she realized that they were siblings. That he was her big brother.
A sad smile spread across her face at the memory.
She felt her skin heating up and glanced at the kettle, steam rushed out of it.
“Oh my gosh!” She exclaimed and brought down the hot kettle from the cooker. She tried turning off the cooker immediately but the heat burnt her so she picked a piece of rag to shut the cooker but it lit up in flames instead.
She dumped the cloth on the floor, gasping out in fear.
“What are you doing?” She heard a very familiar voice asked, Serena turned to see that it was the king standing in bewilderment behind her.
What is he doing here? Serena wondered.
“I.. um.. I want to turn it off, the cooker.. refused…” Serena stuttered.
“Turn it off. Turn it off now!’ King Zed commanded, his eyes fixed on the burning fire which had started spreading through the cloth Serena threw down to the floor.
Serena rushed to the sink and took out water from the tap in a bowl, pouring it on the fire that was spreading pretty fast along the counter.
After quenching the fire down, she went ahead and turned off the cooker, burning her hand again in the process.
She took a deep breath and bit down her lip. She slowly turned when she heard someone panting fast, she looked up and at King Zed’s face to see him standing right behind her, his eyes fixed on the counter.
And his cold grey eyes if he found.. fear?
After staring at it for minutes, he recovered and tore his eyes away from the cooker before leaving the kitchen in annoyance.
Serena turned back to look at the cooker confused.
What just happened? She asked herself, her left hand flying to her chest in fear of almost burning down the whole kitchen.
She took up the kettle and poured the remaining water there into a glass cup. She added a little bit of cold water to it, making sure the water is too hot or too cold before placing it on another tray.
She left the kitchen after that to find him.
She traced him with his scent to his office, she stopped at the door and knocked but no answer came.
“Master, it’s me. You need to drink water.” Serena said, hoping he’ll answer her.
The door opened on its own after some minutes and Serena entered.
She saw the king holding his head and he appeared to be deep in thought.
She carefully walked towards him and placed down the cup of water before taking a step backwards
“You can leave.” King Zed groaned.
Serena nodded once before reaching for the door, but stopped to look at the king who was still holding his head like it was gonna fall off anytime.
Serena didn’t understand why the king reacted to the fire that way, she didn’t know why he of all people could get scared because of a small fire.
King Zed doesn’t get scared, he is not scared of anything or anyone so the situation was very confusing to her.
She kept staring at him, fighting the thought to leave like he ordered.
She kept standing at the door wishing she could go in back, wishing she could ask and confront him.
She didn’t understand why she was suddenly having such concerns for the king but it was as if every bone in her body was asking her to go ask him what the problem was. It was as if disobeying the king and going in to meet him was the right thing to do.
But she still has to obey his orders.
After a conflicting thought, she decided to obey him but not leave him.
She closed the door but leaned her back against the door with the tray which she used in serving him the warm water pressed to her body.
She stood outside his office for what seemed like twenty minutes, constantly listening to see if she would hear him move but he didn’t.
The thought that the king might have a past, something connected to fire, a past that is still scaring him made her extremely concerned.
She doesn’t know how or why she suddenly developed that feeling but it was there.
After another twenty minutes passed and he was still not moving or responding, she summoned up courage and tried opening the door but found it locked.
“My King, I don’t know why you are like this but… if you want to talk to someone, I’m here for you to talk to. I’m your forever slave so your secrets will be buried with me.” She thought out loud hoping that the king heard her thoughts.
After waiting for an extra five minutes, he still didn’t respond. She turned to look at the door sadly before leaving to drop the tray off at the kitchen and also clean up the mess she made.
*********
“Hey man, will you calm down?” Ken said to Isaac who paced around the room.
“No! I can’t calm down, Kendrick. I don’t know what the king did or said to her for her to have behaved that way. I’m mad, you saw the way she ignored me twice and she doesn’t even mind linking me when she knows that I am leaving the castle.
She could have come out and at least say goodbye or something but didn’t. Of course I’m mad!” Issac said painfully.
“You yourself said that she isn’t allowed to see you again. That’s the king’s command, were you expecting her to break it even after what happened.
To me what the king did was quite fair, it’s better than being dead you know.” Kendrick argued.
Issac turned to glare at him.
“What? I’m only telling the truth, it’s better than being dead. Why don’t you just mind-link her instead?” Ken suggested.
“I can’t, the king. I don’t know what he did to my head, I don’t mind linking her, she is the only one I don’t mind linking to and it’s quite annoying. She should do it at least.” Isaac huffed.
“How are you sure she is able to mind-link you since you can’t mind-link her?” Ken turned to Isaac questioned
“Just a feeling. I just know that the king didn’t take it away, she is just avoiding me. She knows that I’m obviously mad at her.” Isaac said, shaking his head.
“Maybe you should stop being mad at her then. When she finds out that you are no longer mad at her then she will mind-link you.”
“Then what? What’s gonna happen after that man? I’m not allowed to see my sister ever again. I can’t see her again, do you know how crazy that is?
I won’t be able to live with it, Ken. I can’t live without seeing her, it will be close to impossible, I mean after searching for her for that long, then I lose her again?
No. I have to figure this out. I have to think.” Isaac said, biting down his lips and thousands of thoughts filled his mind.
