CHAPTER 37

I wanted to hit my head on the glass table so bad, but I groaned instead, rubbing my face harshly with my palms.
“I cannot do that mother,” I argued, knowing that none of the options were going to be favorable for me.
“Then we do not have a deal.” she clapped twice as the maids rushed in with bowls and plates of different foods. “Be careful, Son, I might be miles away from you, doesn’t change much. Eat.” she said with a tone that indicated she was done with the conversation and passed me a plate of pasta.
Even if I was hungry on my way here, (which I wasn’t) the banter I just had with my mother was enough to ruin my appetite.
“How’s Courtney?” I asked about my little sister. It was actually rude of me to not have asked about her since I came.
“She’s been headstrong as usual,” she wiped her mouth courteously with a sparkling white napkin. “But I have her under control, allowing her think she can actually do as she pleases now that she’s living on her own.”
The food went completely stale in my mouth at my mother’s words. Seriously? Does she always have to be such a control freak?
“Court left home and I wasn’t aware? Why’s that?” I asked with an irritated tone, dropping my fork on the china glass plate noisily.
‘”It’s not something worth bothering your busy head about, son,” she raises her dignified head to stare at me, “I have it all under control,”
“Courtney is no longer a child, mother!” my voice was hoarse and frustrated. I couldn’t keep my cool anymore.
I was so busy I didn’t even know what was going on in my kid sister’s life, I chided myself, feeling pained and promising myself to invite her over once I get back to London.
“You’ll get indigestion if you yell that way while eating, Connor.” she commented in a soft voice as though the indigestion wasn’t already happening.
I gulped down the glass of water placed in front of me and got up to leave. I was sick of being here already.
“Where are you going Connor? You have a guest,” she grinned mischievously at my confused face and turned her face to the door leading into the dining room.
My gaze followed hers only to see a dolled up Angela coming towards us with one of her fake smiles plastered on her face.
My mouth almost fell agape and I twirled back to see my mother giving me the don’t-say-anything-that-would-implicate-you look. But that was exactly what I planned to do.
Why the hell was Angela here? How could my mother deliberately decide to ruin me this way?
Angela rushed to hug my mother with her sham extra cheerful attitude, calling my mother, ‘Mother’ in my presence.
She kissed my mother’s cheeks and came towards me but I raised my hands up instantly to stop her. “Don’t even dare come close!” I said with an icy glare and tone.
“C’mon, Connor,” she smiled with her cartoonish face, “We haven’t seen each other for over a year now, I’ve missed you even though you haven’t missed me. Besides, we could be a couple soon.”
I sent my mother a nasty glare as Angela spewed her endless trash. That was never going to happen as long as I was breathing. My mother looked away and continued chewing her food.
“That would never happen, besides I’m in love with someone already.” I announced, picking up my phone from the table, “I was already on my way out, Angela, enjoy your meal.” I finalized and walked out of the both of them but caught subtle shock at the corner of my mother’s lips.
It was dusk already, but I was going back home, to tell Grace the truth.
JODY
Grace finally answered her phone.
She said she was okay and was working on the Horror Novel she had been working on for a while now. I knew she wasn’t okay but I felt more at ease now she finally picked her call.
I dropped the phone and came back to my pillow for today, Marcus’s broad and smooth chest. It rose and fell in fluid rhythm as he slept peacefully after the sex.
But I was hungry so I couldn’t sleep peacefully like him. I needed to eat something, urgently. I couldn’t cook anymore, so I decided to order pizza.
I touched Marcus’s bare chest gently, to ask if he was going to eat pizza. His eyes opened almost immediately and I had to stifle bouts if giggles.
“Hey…” he whispered with a sexy sleepy voice, drawing my back down on the bed and resumed cuddling.
“I’m hungry, Marcus,” I giggled out loud now, “I wanted to ask you if you’ll eat pizza, I’m too tired to cook anything.”
“Pizza is junk food, Jody,” he said in his self-righteous tone causing me to roll my eyes at him. ‘I’ll make pasta real quick. You have groceries right?”
I nodded, laughing at him. I never knew he had this side of him, honestly, and that means we’ll fight a lot cuz I’m obsessed with pizzas and I’m so not a fan of cooking. Living alone made it worse.
He got up, put on his boxer short and went down to the living room. Some minutes later, came to join him but it seemed like he had everything figured out already.
By the time he was done, the whole apartment was smelling so nice, I was sure the food would be awesome.
He dished out two plates and we went to eat on the couch while he insisted he must place his on the table.
But before we finished eating, his phone beeped, and because it was close to me, I peeped and saw a creepy text message that read, “Watch your back, Connor Shelby.”
