CONNOR.
Marcus knocked on my bedroom door when I was finally trying to get some sleep. “Come on in.” I called from inside and sat up on my bed.
“Good morning, Alpha.” Marcus was looking all smart and active in his navy-blue colored suit and tailored trousers.
He raised his head to stare at me. “You look spent, Alpha, were you able to sleep at all?” he asked with a worried elevated eyebrow and creased forehead.
Of course I look spent. I couldn’t sleep a wink all through the night, thinking about what Grace could possibly have going on with the Mercedes guy.
I ran in my wolf form all through the night, hoping I could find some relieve or it would help clear my head.
“I’m okay, Marcus.” I said instead. “Just had a lot to do.”
He shot me a disbelieving stare before turning to the tablet on his hands. “An article came out last night about you in Essex, at Dior’s Diner.” he said, his eyes trained on the tablet as he scrolled slowly.
“These guys will never give up, will they?” I mumbled and sighed, throwing back my quilts, getting up and ambling towards my gym which was behind my dresser.
Marcus followed behind briskly. “Should I-”
I waved my hand, cutting him short. “We have enough on our plates already, don’t we Marcus?” I hop on a treadmill.
“Yes, Alpha,” he said politely. “Speaking of our plates, many newspapers and magazines have been calling for interviews.”
I stop treadmilling and turn to face him. “Can you list them?” I asked and for a few seconds he was too surprised to speak. This was the first time of course. He knew I disliked interviews so I had always turned them down. And I’d never been curious about which news agency, like never ever.
He glanced at the tablet once more and started scrolling. “Starcent, Earthners, Mara Cruz, Glass Gossip, Silverline, NAs Daily-”
“Stop.” I cut him short and resumed walking on the treadmill. “Reach out to NAs Daily, tell them tomorrow by ten. And the interviewer must be Grace Jones.” I instructed and increased my pace from jogging to running, imagining with a grin how shocked Marcus would be looking.
“Yes, Alpha,” he replied weakly and left me.
I ended up spending long hours in the gym, thinking about Grace and our child and the attack the day she met me again. I felt a tad grateful to the attackers because somehow, my lost love was led back to me after what they did.
However, I could not let them go scot-free. They had the nerve to lay an ambush and assault me and my driver who were both armless. I had to make them pay, had to make them realize they messed with the wrong dude.
Anyways, I caught their scents and knew for a fact that they were rogue wolves probably from Adrian, my forever enemy.
I soon stopped working out and went on to take a shower. Marcus was back in my bedroom, standing close to one of the long couch with his tablet.
“I believe those were Adrian’s men, Marcus,” I said, toweling my head and puting on a robe.
Marcus looked up at me, totally caught off guard. I haven’t said much about the attack since then, or better still I had refused to talk about it.
“I thought you both have reached a truce about the border thing?” Marcus asked, looking confused. “Why would he try that again?”
“Well we have reached a truce but he still wants the house at the border my father bought seven years ago, and I cannot allow that.” I walked into my dresser with him following quietly behind.
“Besides, I already made that place a shelter for abused women and children. I know he wants the place for his greedy gains.” I skim through clothing items from the casual category.
“So what do we do, Alpha?”
“Let’s investigate as usual before acting.” I stopped fishing for clothes and turned to face him. “I don’t want us jumping into conclusions.”
“Alright, Alpha. By the way your mother called-”
“Yes, speaking of which, do you know the woman we met in front of Grace’s building? Both of you stared at each other for quite a while.” I cut him short, trying to hide the amusement from my face.
“Yes, I do,” he said, staring at his feet.
“Oh” came my response with a raised eyebrow that could pass for a gentle probing.
“She was my first crush in high school. Never got around winning her heart.” He looked uncomfortable, like it was something he didn’t want to talk about, but then he let out a dry chuckle and raised his head. “I made a public confession to her with music and flowers.”
I couldn’t contain the gasp that left my throat. Marcus did that?
“Go on,” I said, stifling an urge to chuckle. If I chuckled, he’d stop talking.
“And then she turned me down right there and then.”
“Let’s go sit, Marcus.” I said and let him out of the dresser even though I was still in my white robe. We sat on the long couch and I realized Marcus hadn’t quite gotten over her yet, if not he wouldn’t have given me that beatup expression that instantly made me swallow my urge to laugh over it.
“I’m so sorry, Marcus,” I consoled him in a soft voice.
“Thank you, Alpha, but it’s all in the past now.” He said with a forlorn look and I knew he wasn’t alright. “Besides, the Luna says you should pick up her call, or she’s coming to Central London.” He smartly changed the topic.
Oh, no god!
My mother knew I was avoiding her, but she would never give up. It was obvious why she was bothering so much, always asking to know if I was dating or met someone new, or when was I going to bring forth an heir and crazy stuffs like that.
She went to the point of matchmaking me with daughters from wealthy families she was acquainted with, knowing fully well I wasn’t going to have the courtesy of meeting them at the very least.
Although I’d never had aserious commitment with most women I’d had shits with, I liked to choose for myself. Besides there were more important things to think about, like Grace and Laurel.
“Marcus?”
“Yes Alpha?”
“I need you to find out the school Grace Jones’ daughter attends.”
