DARWIN PACK – ALKAROD
“He’s burning up again.” The Alpha’s personal physician, Pelto, started touching the Alpha’s son’s head.
He had been trying to treat him for days now but nothing had worked. Since Ethan had broken the link between him and Elora the day she bit him, he had been suffering from seizures and had never stopped being feverish.
“What do you mean, Pelto? You’ve been pumping him full of medicine and still haven’t made progress!” Rasmus yelled, hitting the drawer with a bang that had the smaller man jumping.
His wife, Thalia, and Luna of the Darwin Pack rubbed circles on his shoulder trying to calm him. She somehow managed to stay strong even though their heir was dying.
“You have to stay calm, My Love.” She cooed, “Yelling won’t do him any good.”
“Alpha, I’m doing my best. I truly am.” The physician tried to explain wringing his hands as beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
“Your best is not fucking good enough! Your best isn’t getting my son healed, you fucker!!” Rasmus yelled, “Don’t give me that shit about doing your best!”
Thalia intervened at this point sending a comforting look the quivering man’s way.
“Mr. Pelto, I believe what my husband is trying to say is, that we need solutions. Give us something. Anything please.”
Ethan suddenly began to jerk on the bed, another seizure racking his body in violent spasms that nearly threw him off the bed. The physician and his parents rushed to his side holding him down. His teeth began to clatter as he shook trying to throw them off him.
“If my son dies, Mr. Pelto, you would die too!” Alpha Rasmus growled visibly restraining himself from strangling the physician.
The small man didn’t visibly react to this threat but as he pulled a small tube out of his bag, his hands quivered a bit somehow managing not to spill the contents as he forced down his patient’s throat.
They watched with bated breath as Ethan shook a little more, foaming at the mouth, and then calmed, breathing labored but slowing. His mother sat beside him and began to wipe his mouth and face with a piece of white cloth.
The silence in the room was almost deafening. All three of them watched Ethan as he slept, struggling to breathe properly. Ethan’s chest heaved as he breathed and his eyes twitched like he was in pain.
“Your son is suffering from the broken link between him and his mate,” Mr. Pelto said, breaking the silence. “I can’t treat him. I’ve tried. He severed the link long after they were declared mates. But…”
“Go on, we’re listening.” Alpha Rasmus said glaring at him.
“We’re all ears, Mr. Palto. What is it?” His wife, Thalia, said looking hopeful.
He sighed deeply since he knew the circumstance between Ethan and his mate. “The only cure is his mate,” Mr. Pelto said. “His mate must have suffered a great deal. This can be the only explanation for his situation.”
“What?” The Alpha exclaimed.
There was no way he was going to get Elora especially not after they had sold her to Kain Kurt and he knew better than to cross the Lycan.
“That’s can’t be!” He said pacing the room.
“I need a few drops of her blood. Just a few drops. Think about this carefully because this is the only foolproof cure. Those drops of blood are the ultimate cure.” The physician shrugged.
“We can’t do that! There’s no way we can reach her. She’s gone!” The Alpha didn’t bother thinking of the possibility of accessing Elora.
It was an impossible task.
“Then you’ll have to take another route. It’s less safe and I’m not guaranteeing a full recovery but your son’s situation is quite peculiar.”
“What is this route?” Luna Thalia asked. She couldn’t lose hope.
“I know healers that can heal almost anything. Some of them are from beyond the southern border.” He stopped, letting the information sink into their minds. These were Blackfoots he was talking about.
“Blackfoots? Slaves? I’ll never trust them with my son’s life!” Rasmus spat! “Are there no others?”
The physician was standing, his bag was packed and in hand. He adjusted his glasses and spoke. “The others are remnants of the invaders from the east. They’re Elven healers.”
“Another set of traitors,” Rasmus declared. “But I’d rather pick Elves over Blackfoot slaves any day. When do we go?”
“We don’t have to take Ethan first. That would be quite risky.”
Rasmus would take on any challenge other than Elora.
Even if he didn’t trust the Elves, he had to risk it.
“I understand,” Rasmus said.
“You and I will journey to the east. The elves will most probably want Incas or gold. You will have to bring some. We’ll ask for a cure or a sample.” As the physician explained the journey, he realized that Rasmus showing up on Elven territory may be unhelpful to their case. The Alpha of Darwin pack in Elven territory was a risk. They could be killed on sight.
“We leave tomorrow,” Mr. Pelto said quietly and then nodded to the leading family of Darwin pack. “Have a good day, Alpha Rasmus. Luna Thalia.”
