Chapter 43

Book:The Lycan King's Mate Published:2024-6-4

Sheena’s POV
Shit! I am going to be late again! Why did everyone like to bully me when they knew that I could fight back? Ever since I was a child, Lica has always been mad at me. I didn’t know why she always glared at me when I didn’t do anything to her at all. She’s my step-sister. Her father and my mother were each other’s second-chance mates, and we started to live together after they marked each other.
It was fine with me at first because I thought that I would be able to have someone to play with. But things didn’t go according to plan because, instead of a playmate, I found an enemy. She always finds fault in everything that I do, and her father was always on my side. Of course, he would! He is such a good man who knows the difference between good and bad, and he knows that his daughter is making things hard for me.
“Sheena! Is this what is serious to you?” The head of the patrol guards yelled at me while I could see Lica smirking. She was the main reason why I was late because she had my clock adjusted, so I didn’t wake up on time. I was just starting, and my body clock was not yet used to the very early call time. I insisted on joining the fighter squad, telling them that I was serious about it. Patrolling is one of the training that I need to go through before I become a full-fledged fighter.
“I’m really sorry. This is not going to happen again,” I replied with my head down.
“Alright, pair up.” the patrol head said, and I walked to Devon. We were paired in sparring until here and there on the patrol. I feel like the world is really against me because he is one of Lica’s lackeys. I don’t know what he sees in her, that he always says yes to her every whim and, with the look on my step-sister’s face, I already had an idea that she already told the bastard to make the patrol difficult for me as well, but I choose to ignore it. I want to become a fighter, and they are not the ones who will stop me.
Kidnappings of omegas and weak pack members had been the talk of our and the neighboring pack. Alpha Remos was worried about our own. As of the moment, we haven’t had any incident reports about it, and thank goddess for that. “So, you really wanted to continue this, huh?” Devon asked, and I rolled my eyes internally. Seriously, did he have to ask that?
“Look, I know that you think that I was bullying you because of Lica, but it was not. I just want you to notice me,” he said afterward, and that shocked me. All this time, I never had a good day every time I saw him around.
“I don’t care about that. It’s nonsense for me,” I replied as I looked around. We are here to patrol and not to profess our feelings.
“Sheena,”
“Devon, I don’t care about how you feel. I only wanted to become a fighter or a warrior so I would be able to help defend the pack and the others, especially those who are being targeted by our enemies. So please, stop professing to me about your feelings or whatnot because that is the least of my concerns.” I said and turned my back to him. It’s such an idiot to do that here.
I don’t know about him, but I am waiting for my mate. It’s my mate or nothing at all, and that’s final. We continued the patrol when I suddenly heard a rustling of leaves. I looked around and tried to catch something. It was still dark, and thanks to the wolf’s heightened senses, I was able to see clearly, even if it was this dark. “Shh…” I motioned him to shut up when he was about to say something.
Then he started to become alert and look around, just like what I was doing. Then I heard it again, and I think he did too because he looked at where I thought I heard the sound. It was behind the tree in front of us, and I’m sure of it. I pointed to him at the other side so we would be able to corner whoever or whatever it was. Then we looked together, and the wolf jumped at Devon.
I was confused because I couldn’t smell the wolf’s scent. How come he or she doesn’t have a scent? I didn’t know if it was a rogue either, so I didn’t know what I was going to do. But when I thought that it was going to attack Devon, I shifted and charged.
Devon shifted as well after I kicked the wolf, but it started to run away. I mind linking the head patrol and meeting on the way where the wolf was going. But we didn’t catch it. The others found us, and we shifted before they asked us what happened.
Devon had told them what had happened, but the idiot forgot about one thing. “It doesn’t have a scent.” the head patrol looked at me and asked.
“Are you sure?”
“Definitely, that’s why I don’t know if it was a rogue or not. That’s why we didn’t notice it until it was right in front of us. We couldn’t smell it.” I replied,
“We should report this to Alpha Remos. Training ends here. You all go back home first, and we will get back to you for your next duty,” he said. I was about to leave when he called me,
“You and Devon will have to come with me,” he said, and both of us nodded and followed him to the pack house.
Alpha Remos asked us when we reached his office. The sun was still down, and yet we were there to discuss something. The pack’s security. Alpha was about to leave the pack for Alpha’s meeting that would be held in the palace with the Lycan king. He wanted to make sure that everything was fine so he would be able to leave without worry. Yet, an unknown wolf appeared in our territory.
The pack has been very busy doing some security checks, and instead of going with his beta, Alpha Remos decided to leave by himself with a promise to return as soon as possible. He needed to go so he would be able to seek help at the palace, and he had a feeling that there was something that the King wanted to discuss himself.
While our Alpha was away, I had the opportunity to be assigned to patrol. I was happy, and I did it like my life depended on it. I was hopeful that once Alpha Remos was back, he would have something good for us and the pack.
It was the day of Alpha’s return, and, knowing him, he would announce what had happened to everyone and let us know the details. He was always like that. For some, he may appear like he doesn’t care or mocking, but it’s not like that. He cared for the pack and its members, and he cared for our kind. That’s why I wanted to become a fighter, so I will be able to help him with his cause.
We were all ears when he started telling us about the meeting, and I got excited when he told us that the palace was going to conduct a training session for every pack member. Not all at the same time, so he will only pick ten representatives from the pack. When he chose Lica and me, I was surprised. I never thought that he already saw potential in me. I accepted it, and even if I didn’t want to be with Lica, I promised to endure her during our stay there.
Being trained in the palace is a great opportunity for me. They will teach us how to fight against a Lycan like them, who is more powerful and faster than us. I prepared myself for a vigorous training session and promised to go back to the pack full of learning and knowledge that I could share with other pack members.
But my bitch of a step-sister left me when we made a stop for a break. I don’t know what she told the driver and the others who didn’t think about me either. So, just like my first patrol in the pack, I was late for my training, too. I rushed only to get shocked when I finally came closer. The trainer is my mate. I suddenly felt conscious because I could see that he was a very powerful Lycan, and he didn’t claim me.
You know, the yelling part, where the males shouted MINE. It was sweet for me, no matter how normal it was. That’s why not being able to experience that was somewhat disappointing. So I ignored him as well. Suppose he didn’t want me, fine. I will just do my best and train. But later, the queen approached me, and I was happy that that wasn’t the case.
