Elijah didn’t directly answer the question, but instead asked, “Are you feeling unwell?”
Freya let go of his hand and denied, “No, it’s just that I’ve been standing for a long time and my back hurts a little.”
Apart from that initial glance, her gaze never fell on Elijah again.
She lowered her eyes and said, “It’s late, let’s go back.”
After speaking, she walked ahead.
She tried to keep her back straight, unwilling to let Elijah see her discomfort.
Elijah stood in place and asked, “How much more time do you need?”
Freya’s back stiffened, and after a moment, she quickened her steps.
She didn’t want to discuss this any further with him.
Elijah took a step forward and, regardless of whether she wanted it or not, held her hand tightly.
Freya struggled a bit but couldn’t break free, so she could only follow his footsteps.
The car was parked at the gate. He took out the keys, pressed the unlock button, and the headlights flickered. He opened the car door with one hand while Freya leaned against the car window. “Elijah.”
She raised her eyes and said, “I’m tired today and don’t want to discuss anything with you.”
Elijah pursed his lips and made a soft sound from his throat.
Freya twisted her wrist. “Let go of my hand first.”
Elijah didn’t let go but instead gazed deeply at her.
Freya felt uncomfortable under his gaze.
She avoided making eye contact with him.
She said, evading, “Let’s go home!”
Then she got into the car on her own accord.
Elijah got into the car from the other side and started the engine.
Freya’s stomach felt uncomfortable, so she leaned against the seat, finding some relief. She closed her eyes.
The car was quiet.
Neither of them spoke.
Because it was nighttime, there weren’t many cars on the road, and the journey was smooth.
Feeling the car come to a stop, Freya opened her eyes, but instead of seeing their home, she saw the entrance of a hospital.
Her brows furrowed. “Why did you bring me here?”
Elijah got out of the car without saying a word and walked to her side, opening the car door. “Get out.”
“Why did you bring me to the hospital?” Freya sat in the car, unmoving.
“Your face is pale, so why do you think I brought you to the hospital?” Elijah leaned into the car to undo her seat-belt.
Freya pulled away his hand. “I’m fine, I’m not uncomfortable, and I’m a doctor myself. Whether I’m sick or not, I know it in my own mind. Don’t impose your thoughts on me.”
Elijah looked at her for two seconds. “Why are you so angry?”
“I’m not sick, but you brought me to the hospital. Are you cursing me?” Her words were sharp.
Elijah didn’t get angry. Instead, he smiled, melancholic. He found her getting angry more lively than her being downcast.
Freya frowned. “What are you laughing at? Am I funny?”
“Freya,” he called her softly. “Do you trust me?”
Freya stayed silent for a few seconds. “No, I only believe in human nature.”
Elijah’s expression became serious. “Freya, I feel like our meeting was destined by fate. You said I must have accumulated a lot of good karma in my past life to meet you twice in crucial moments in this life.”
Freya understood what he meant and asked, “Why are you bringing up the past?”
“But I won’t forget. I think it’s something I’ll remember for a lifetime.” He held Freya’s hand. “I said I don’t mind, and I truly mean it. You’ve given me two lives.”
Freya almost burst into laughter, and her serious face softened. “I gave birth to two sons.”
“Taking advantage of me?” Elijah caressed the back of her hand. “You’ve lost weight. I’m sure you haven’t been eating or sleeping well these past few days, right? You look exhausted. Are you having stomach pain since you’re clutching your stomach?”
Freya pulled her hand back. “What did you do while you were away?”
“Busy with work…”
Before he could finish his sentence, Freya interrupted him. “I know you’re busy, and I understand. Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Let’s go back!”
After saying that, she closed the car door.
Elijah furrowed his brows tightly.
Even a fool could tell she was unhappy.
And she was quite furious!
Elijah opened the car door…
