“Hmm?” Elijah looked at her.
Freya wanted to ask if it had something to do with Dina. But she had no evidence.
“What do you want to say?” Elijah sat down at the edge of the bed, looking at her.
Freya hesitated for a moment, but decided to speak up, “Did you bring Dina back after Evan had the accident?”
“No, she was brought back by Evan before that.”
“Evan brought her back?”
Freya thought Dina might have come back to harm Evan. But Dina had returned before the accident happened. There seemed to be no reason for her to harm him. So, her suspicion was unfounded. Was she overthinking? But she knew Dina had feelings for Elijah. As his secretary, Dina must have wanted to come back and work by his side.
“Is there something wrong?” asked Elijah.
Freya shook her head, “It’s nothing.”
“Rest well.” Elijah said as he tucked her in.
“Mm.”
Freya closed her eyes heavily. Once she fell asleep, Elijah quietly left the room. He closed the door behind him. Elowen walked over and asked, “I noticed that she has lost a lot of weight. Did she have a difficult childbirth?”
Elijah lowered his gaze slightly, “Yes, that’s why she needs to rest.”
Elowen felt sorry for her daughter. “I will take good care of her.”
Elowen was Freya’s biological mother, and with her taking care of her personally, Elijah felt relieved.
As Elijah started the car, he dialed Orion’s number.
The Russo family’s place.
Haley’s parents were also there. Orion’s current demand was a divorce. But Haley refused to agree, insisting that Orion framed her for infidelity. Now, the two families were at odds. More specifically, it was Orion against the Holt family and his own mother. Mrs Russo was not allowing Orion to get a divorce. She tried her best to persuade him.
“This matter might be a misunderstanding. How can we talk about divorce when it comes to marriage?” said she.
Orion stared at his mother. “She cheated…”
“I didn’t. You framed me, you set a trap to force me to reveal Luna’s whereabouts.” Haley firmly declared. She was determined to hold onto her marriage. Divorce was out of the question. She would never let Orion be free from their marriage.
Whenever Luna was mentioned, Mrs Russo stood on Haley’s side. She believed Haley’s words, that Orion framed her to find out Luna’s whereabouts. She had put so much effort into her son’s marriage. She wouldn’t allow Orion to easily divorce.
“This Luna is indeed a troublemaker, not even resting in peace!” Mrs Russo accidentally let it slip.
Orion stared at her. “What did you say? How do you know Luna is dead?”
The Holt family also stared at Orion’s mother.
“I heard it,” Mrs Russo casually made up an excuse.
“Who did you hear it from?” Orion pressed on. He wasn’t a fool. The only people close to Luna only knew that she went missing, but no one knew if she intentionally disappeared or if she was dead. But he had heard what his mother said. Besides, Haley also accused his mother of being responsible for Luna’s death. He didn’t dare to ask because he was afraid that it might be true and he didn’t know how to face it.
However, his mother admitted it.
“You’re interrogating me?” Mrs Russo suddenly raised her voice, questioning her son, “Is this how you speak to me?”
At this moment, Ten Holt, Haley’s father, spoke up, siding with his own daughter. The Holt couple was aware of Luna’s death, and though they were involved and schemed, it was Orion’s mother who carried out the deed. In a way, they had caught Mrs Russo’s weakness. Regardless of whether their daughter was at fault or not, they supported her unconditionally. They stood by her side and accused Orion, “Orion, I thought you were a good husband for my daughter, someone she could trust for a lifetime. That’s why I married her to you. But now you’re entangled with your ex-girlfriend and falsely accusing Haley of infidelity. Doesn’t your conscience hurt?”
“I always believed you were a filial child, but look at how you defy your mother. You know your family situation very well. Although the Russo family’s company is in your hands now, don’t forget that you have a half-brother, and your father isn’t just you. Our support is crucial. If you divorce Luna, can you still hold on to the Russo family’s company?”
Orion listened to his mother’s words because he knew how difficult life had been for her. That was why he followed her every instruction. He had quit his beloved job and left the woman he loved.
He looked at his mother with a pained expression, “I left her, why did you have to kill her?”
Debra Russo decided not to hide anymore and admitted, “Yes, I killed Luna. Because of her, you couldn’t make up your mind and live a happy life with Haley. So I had to get rid of her. But it’s your fault too. Why did you break up with her and still think about her? As long as she’s around, you can’t peacefully live with Haley. So, I had to eliminate this trouble!”
Debra Russo looked at her son, “Are you going to the police to report me for murder?” She was certain her son wouldn’t dare. Orion’s personality was actually quite soft. He wasn’t very firm. If he were determined enough, he wouldn’t have listened to her and quit his job as a doctor or broken up with Luna.
Debra Russo believed she understood her son’s temperament very well. But she didn’t know that all of Orion’s concessions were because of his filial piety. He knew his mother had a difficult time, with her husband openly having an affair and not treating her well. She only had the status of a wife. That was why he followed her wishes against his own will. But what did his concessions bring him? More demands, coercion, and even the death of the woman he loved the most?
“You’ve disappointed me.” After saying this, Orion turned and walked away.
“Orion!” Debra Russo called out to him.
But Orion didn’t respond. He didn’t want to face such a mother. He didn’t want to stay in this kind of family for a second longer. As he got into his car, he received a call from Elijah and drove to the hospital. Elijah was already at the hospital, waiting in the ward. Orion’s face was extremely grim. Elijah glanced at him and asked, “What’s wrong with you?”
Orion composed himself and said, “It’s nothing.”
“How did the doctor say?” Elijah looked at Evan lying on the hospital bed, his face filled with emotions.
“I’ve arranged for someone to give him professional muscle massages every day, just in case his muscles atrophy from lying down for too long. I’ve also consulted with experts. The chances of him waking up are only twenty percent, it’s a small chance.” Orion’s voice sounded hoarse, not because of Evan’s situation, but because of the mess in his own family.
Elijah fell silent for a moment. “Take good care of him for a while. I have some things to take care of and may not be in the country for a while.”
“Leave Evan’s matter to me…”
“But I don’t trust you.” Orion didn’t even finish his sentence before Elijah interrupted him.
“Tell me, what’s really going on?”
Orion had no idea how to begin.
Suddenly, the device monitoring Evan’s bodily functions sounded an alarm.
