Elijah frowned at the sudden and abrupt question. The topic had shifted too quickly, and he found it quite unexpected.
How did they end up talking about his secretary?
The transition in conversation was too swift.
“She’s just a secretary,” Elijah had never paid much attention to his secretary’s behavior. “Why are you asking this?”
Freya recalled the secretary’s actions in his office and furrowed her brows. “When I went to the company to find you, I saw her in your office.”
Her words were discreet.
Sometimes secretaries entered his office, and Elijah hadn’t detected anything unusual. “So what?”
Freya’s lips twitched. Could it be that she was overthinking things?
But she vividly remembered seeing the secretary leaning on Elijah’s desk, and the posture…
Or was it that she saw it wrong?
But she was sure she hadn’t.
“Are you jealous, Freya? If you feel uneasy about my subordinates, I can replace her,” Elijah’s face, which had been gloomy, suddenly showed a hint of a smile.
Freya blinked, asking, “Do you think I’m jealous?”
“Otherwise?” Elijah lightly laughed in response.
Freya admitted that when she saw the secretary in that state, she was taken aback and felt a chill. However, it wasn’t jealousy. After all, Elijah wasn’t in the office; it was the secretary performing a solo act.
“I’m not jealous.”
Elijah pulled her into his arms, encircling her. “Are you lying? Hmm?”
His face approached her ear, and the warm, humid breath brushed against her ear, making her feel ticklish.
Freya shrank her neck and surrendered, “I’m jealous, okay, I’m jealous.”
Elijah kissed her cheek and teased by her ear, “You’re jealous. Only by being jealous can you prove you like me…”
His voice was deep. Freya sensed something amiss, hastily saying, “You probably haven’t eaten yet, right? I’ll go cook…”
As she spoke, she pushed Elijah away and headed towards the kitchen. Since Linda wasn’t in the house, there were no servants to prepare meals for them. In the kitchen, Freya opened the refrigerator and found it quite empty.
“Do you want to go to the supermarket?” she asked.
Elijah walked in, hugging her from behind. “We can eat out…”
“We could, but Kai is small. Although he drinks formula, he’s at the age where he can start eating solid food. We have nothing at home, and it’s inconvenient.” She spoke softly. “You shouldn’t joke around.”
Concerned about the child, Elijah agreed, “I’ll take you.”
Freya looked up at him. “How come I feel like you’ve been quite free these past few days?”
He hadn’t been going to the company much.
Elijah smiled, “Can’t I have time to accompany you?”
Freya sensed something off but didn’t press further. Smiling back, she said, “Sure.”
“Then let’s go.”
They left the house, instructing the guards at the door to call them once Kai woke up.
The guard said, “Got it.”
Elijah, with his arm around Freya’s shoulder, went to the car.
“I have something to tell you.” Freya hesitated but decided to share, “Zane drugged Kai because someone kidnapped his mother. That’s why he…”
Elijah started the car, his face expressionless. In reality, he heard every word she said.
“I’m thinking that the person who truly wants to harm Kai must be someone who hates you and me. That’s why they want to harm our child. I seem to have a clue.” Freya combined Mrs Quinn’s words today with her speculation, “I think it might be Thorne Silverton.”
“Why do you think it’s him?” Elijah asked.
“Do you remember his girlfriend, Calista Winters? She wanted me to be a judge at the dance competition. I think her motive is definitely not as simple as having me as a judge. There must be something fishy. I want to find out whether she and Thorne Silverton are behind Kai’s incident.”
“I will investigate. You don’t need to go,” Elijah worried about potential dangers.
Freya said, “There won’t be any trouble. There will be many people at the venue, and she won’t dare to do anything openly.”
Elijah still disagreed, but Freya actively held his arm, tenderly saying, “If you can’t rest assured, disguise yourself and sit in the shadows, watching me. You’ve been quite free these days, right?”
Elijah couldn’t resist her coquetry, somewhat helpless but amused, “As you wish.”
Freya laughed happily.
“Why are you so happy?” Elijah raised an eyebrow.
“I just want to see what she can do,” Freya said.
Elijah glanced at her; this adventurous spirit in her was somewhat competitive. He didn’t like overly fragile girls, and Freya wasn’t one. She had a bit of toughness and intelligence. However, she wasn’t completely unyielding-her body was soft.
When he held her, he didn’t want to let go. She was a woman of both strength and gentleness.
They soon arrived at the supermarket. After parking the car, Freya took a coin from her bag to unlock a shopping cart. Elijah’s daily life, including his food, clothing, shelter, and transportation, was arranged by others. He had never been to a supermarket himself.
The food at home was all prepared by Linda. So, when it came to things he wasn’t good at, he stayed silent, just quietly following Freya, not because he was afraid of losing his way but because he wanted to stay close to her.
Freya freed up a hand to hold his, asking softly, “Have you never been to a supermarket?”
Elijah nodded slightly, somewhat arrogantly saying, “Rarely.”
Freya laughed, “There’s nothing wrong with that. You were born into the Silverton family, taken care of since childhood. It’s normal not to have done these things. You don’t need to conceal it.”
Elijah held her hand in return, softly saying, “Is it that amusing?”
“Not amusing at all, not in the slightest,” Freya conceded.
Elijah glanced at her. This woman always played smart in front of him, first mocking him, then conceding, making it impossible to scold or argue with her. Despite her behavior, he found her utterly charming.
In the elevator, they arrived at the shopping area, strolling around for nearly an hour before finishing their shopping with two bags. That night, Freya personally cooked dinner, and Elijah held Kai once he woke up. They spent the evening like an ordinary couple, with the wife cooking and the husband taking care of the child.
During dinner, Elijah asked, “Have you picked a date?”
Freya said, “Not yet. My mom might be busy again in the next few days.”
Elijah frowned, “Hmm? What do you mean?”
“She has to take care of Zane.” Freya had a ‘don’t you know?’ expression.
Elijah, “…”
Was this still his fault?
No, he wasn’t wrong.
His son suffering was a price that had to be paid.
The next day, Freya arrived at the sports center on time. Many kids who had come to participate in the competition were already there, mostly girls, with a few boys, though very few.
Calista Winters approached, smiling, “You’re here?”
Freya returned the smile, “I came because I had to. It’s a bit hard to force myself to come.”
She pretended to be somewhat timid and guilty.
Combined with Calista finding out from Mrs Quinn that Freya couldn’t dance, she felt even more confident. She grinned, full of self-assurance, “We’ll see each other later.”
Freya continued to smile, “See you later.”
Once Calista walked away, Freya’s face immediately turned cold.
