This sound, so full of twists and turns, was sweet and delicate, making one’s scalp tingle.
“Brendon, Holly and I came to see you. Are you doing okay today?” Shannon said, reaching out to hold Brendon’s arm, but he evaded her. The man spoke indifferently, “I’m fine. Why did you come? If there’s nothing important, you should go back. I have a lot of things to take care of.”
Outside the door, Ranita held onto the doorknob without pushing it open.
Seeing Shannon and Holly inside, Ranita hesitated and then heard Brendon telling them to leave, “Holly, take Shannon back.”
“Brother! We just got here, and you’re in such a hurry to kick us out. Do you really despise us that much?” Holly paused for a moment, then complained, “Never mind me, but Shannon is your fiancée. Isn’t it normal for her to come to the hospital and take care of you when she’s worried?”
“Why are you so indifferent towards Shannon? Brother, ever since you met Ranita, you’ve been acting strange. Do you still want to be with her?”
Holly really had no filter, and Shannon felt uncomfortable hearing those words. “Holly, please stop.”
Shannon looked up with a touch of grievance on her face, unable to hold back any longer.
Holly spoke rapidly, “Brendon, it’s not that I want to meddle in your relationship with Shannon, but as a bystander, I can’t bear to watch anymore! How many times have you hurt Shannon since Ranita appeared? In Berlin, you didn’t even come back for mom’s birthday! And this time, you openly said that you bought that set of green jade for Shannon, but then you gave it to Ranita…”
Ranita pursed her lips, barely daring to breathe. Through the crack in the door, she could see the man’s brows furrowed tightly.
Brendon’s voice was low, “Holly, this is a private matter between Shannon and me. Please don’t interfere.”
“I…” Holly stomped her foot in anger, wanting to say more, but Shannon pulled her back, saying, “Holly, please stop! Brendon must have his reasons for doing this…”
“Let’s not make trouble for Brendon, okay?” Shannon tenderly persuaded Holly, then pleaded with Brendon, “If you’re angry with Holly, she’s just being friendly with me. She has a straightforward personality. Don’t blame her. Blame me instead. She was just standing up for me.”
Shannon took the blame upon herself, and Brendon couldn’t say much with his brows furrowed.
“Holly, wait outside for a while.” Seeing that she was about to be left alone, Holly reluctantly said, “Brother, why can’t you say what you have to say in front of me?”
“Go out.” Brendon’s tone was firm, and Holly had no choice but to leave.
Ranita didn’t want to run into Holly, so she quickly hid in the nearby fire escape.
After an unknown amount of time, she heard Holly shout Shannon’s name, followed by hurried footsteps growing fainter.
Ranita cautiously took a peek and saw Shannon wiping her tears, unaware of what Brendon was saying.
After hesitating for a moment, Ranita knocked on the door and entered.
Brendon’s expression was somewhat cold, but when he looked up and saw Ranita, he suddenly smiled. It felt like her heart was fiercely struck.
The icy coldness in the depths of his heart instantly melted into spring water, nourishing the soil and blooming tiny flowers.
“Ranita, why did you take so long to come?” he asked softly, with a hint of hoarseness and barely perceptible reproach.
Ranita’s heart felt a tinge of sourness, but suddenly, an indescribable sweetness surged forth, something that no one else could give her.
Brendon saw her standing still and got off the bed, his shadow enveloping her. He gently tugged at her wrist.
His eyebrows lifted, and he smiled again.
