Ranita carefully adjusted Brendon’s pillow and even moved his head to make him more comfortable. She was so focused that she didn’t notice his fingers moving at his side.
“Okay…” Ranita’s voice trailed off as she looked up into a pair of deep, dark eyes.
“Brendon, you’re awake…” Ranita covered her mouth in surprise before realizing she needed to find a doctor or nurse.
“Ranita!” But he grabbed her hand with surprising strength. His voice was hoarse and barely audible. “Where are you going?”
“What did you say?”
Ranita leaned in closer, trying to hear him better.
“What did you just say?”
Meanwhile, Ayaan saw Brendon wake up and ran over like a bullet with big red eyes. “Daddy!”
Brendon seemed shocked by the sudden appearance of Ayaan and then looked back at Ranita.
“He’s calling for you,” said Ranita awkwardly.
Brendon nodded but didn’t let go of her hand. He stared at her intensely and asked, “Where are you going?”
“I can’t hear you.” Ranita leaned in even closer until she was almost lying on top of him. “Say it again.”
Brendon reached for his breathing mask which scared Ranita who held onto his hand tightly saying, “What are you doing? Don’t kill yourself!”
“I’m going to call the doctor.”
“Don’t leave me,” Brendon kept staring at her with those dark eyes that made her feel like prey being hunted by a dangerous predator.
Ranita’s heart raced, deciding that as soon as the doctor arrived, she would leave with her son. When the doctor arrived, Brendon refused to release her hand, causing the medical staff to look at her with significant glances, making Ranita extremely embarrassed.
“The patient has woken up, and the treatment will only improve from here. We’ll conduct a detailed examination later and review the reports,” the doctor assured her before leaving.
After the doctor departed, Ranita pushed his hand away. “Let go!”
“Daddy, you’re embarrassed!” Ayaan’s little head leaned towards Brendon’s side, his eyes resembling Ranita’s, blinking away. “You’re all grown up, do you still need to hold mommy’s hand for injections?”
Brendon felt no shame at the comment and even nodded. “Hmm… Ayaan, I’m in pain. Can you lend me your mommy for a bit?”
The little one pondered seriously for a moment and then nodded. “Okay.”
“But daddy, you have to give mommy back. I only has one mommy.”
“I promise!” Brendon held Ranita’s hand, his sickly appearance showing signs of fatigue. “Ranita, could you pour me a glass of water? I’m thirsty.”
“I’ll get it!” Ayaan dutifully ran to fetch water, instructing Ranita, “Mommy, daddy is hurt. You should feed him the water.”
Could Ranita refuse to let Ayaan do the feeding?
“Here you go!” Ranita felt her son’s allegiance shift. Wasn’t he just a dad? Was he really that special?
Carefully, she helped Brendon drink water and couldn’t resist asking, “Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
Glancing at Ranita, Brendon replied, “Everywhere feels uncomfortable.”
“Should I call the doctor?” Feeling guilty, Ranita’s tone softened, and her attitude became more relaxed.
“There’s no need, it’ll get better slowly.” Pausing, Brendon pinched her fingers and playfully said, “My back is a bit itchy. Can you scratch it for me?”
