As she slowly regained her consciousness and opened her eyelids, she turned to look at me, and I knew the horrors were back.
“Mom? Oh mom, I’m so sorry. All these while I had thought you were selfish to have erased my memories, but it was I who begged you to.” She had uttered immediately.
“Are you alright? Is your head still hurting dear?” I asked, ignoring what she had said.
She nodded with a smile, “I’m perfect mom. I remember everything.”
Every other mother would be leaping for joy that her daughter’s lost memories are back, but not me. I knew what accompanies this joy of hers, and it’s not pretty.
The fact that she can say this with a smile now, is cause for alarm and it scared me.
“Everything doesn’t matter, ok? You have yourself and you baby to worry ab…”
“Where is Sophia?” She interrupted, and it started.
Without Dr Joe, I can’t handle this problem.
“Don’t you remember what happened that got you here? Sophia tried to hurt you, or maybe kill you.” I commented.
“So? Where is she?” She pressed on.
“We can’t find her. The police are searching but she’s nowhere to be found.” I answered frustrated.
“I need to see my sister, I have to make sure she’s ok. Please mom, find her and make sure she is ok.” She pleaded with me.
I wanted to argue with her, but what’s the point. From here on, nobody can say nothing wrong about Sophia- no one.
“I’ll try my best. Markian and Heather are outside, I’ll call them inside ok?” I said before heading out to tell Markian that she’s awake.
It didn’t take a minute for Markian to realize something was off, so he left the room. I sat there in her room for the next few hours, before she got discharged and I took her home with me while their mansion is still being searched.
After I took a shower, I got dressed and then went to her room to talk with her and keep her company.
As I opened the door, I saw her on her bed with her legs on the sheet and her knees under her chin.
“Livy honey, are you alright?” I asked concerned.
Her current posture is a symbol of when she’s sad, and that bothers me.
“You know it’s my fault. The last time Sophy was in this room, she said to me, ‘In the end, my dear sister would always win over me’. She also said ‘Promise me Liv… even if I’m not around tomorrow, you’ll not touch what’s mine… that way I can at least win against you… for once.’ If only I had remembered all these on time, I never would have gotten married to Markian and put us all in this situation.” She stated as tears rolled down her cheeks.
“You don’t mean that. Nothing that has happened for the past 19yrs have been your fault.” I replied in an attempt to console her.
“How can you say that?! She is my sister, I promise her I would protect her! It was my job to protect her!” She yelled at me.
“It’s not your job to protect Sophia, that was my job to do. It’s my job to protect my girls but I failed at it, so don’t beat yourself up. You are not to blame for anything, I should be blamed.” I confessed hastily.
Oscar was wrong about me and so was Selina.
“She hates me mom. You should have seen the look in her eyes when she looks at me. How can my own sister hate me so much?” She asked as the tears flowed.
“She has her demons to fight. Sometimes they take the form of you as her insecurities, but you’re not at fault.” I replied pulling her into a hug.
“I feel hollow inside mom. If I can’t save Sophia, I don’t think I’ll be able to live. It’s the one promise I have to keep, if not I’m as good as being called her killer.”
“You were a mere fetus when that happened, you knew nothing. That shouldn’t rule your life. Sophia’s choice of path isn’t your responsibility, she’s solely accountable for her actions and decisions.” I stated firmly.
“Mom! If I can’t save my sister, I don’t think I’ll be able to live with myself.” She pressed sternly.
“Ok, ok. I hear you. You want to save her right? I’ll help you do that. But you’ll have to make me a promise first.” I bargained.
She pulled away from me and stared into my eyes, trying to read me.
“What promise?” She asked uncertain.
“Promise me you’ll take care of yourself and your baby. You’ll think less about Sophia and stay health, in return I’ll search for her with every resources in my power. Do we have a deal?” I asked calmly.
She took a second before she nodded in affirmation and said, “Yes, I promise. Thank you so much mom.”
She hugged me again, and just in time Markian entered the room. He’ll be staying here with Livy for the next few days, until we are sure that Sophia is nowhere near to their home.
“Mrs. Luthel?” Markian greeted.
“Markian?” I responded before leaving the room.
I honestly pray that the next few days, weeks and months go by without any issues. Because, truth be told, there’s no telling what next Sophia might do.
