On a regular day, my brother’s decisions about his company are usually flawless, but lately he’s been sloppy- making mistakes, and the statistics are tenably reclining.
But is he worried about that? No… he’s currently in the kitchen making dinner for a super important friend of he’s who’s visiting.
I’m the only one my brother cooks for, which left me thinking just how important this guest was, hopefully the Governor?
I came down from my room and walked into the living room feeling exceptionally grumpier than usually and bored to my bones.
After surfing on the internet for possible science fairs and exhibitions, it seems I’ve gotten through every last one of those mediocre activities.
I turned on the TV to watch a documentary on Einstein and his achievements for the 100th time, because my brother wants me downstairs to welcome his guest who apparently has no sense of punctuality.
“Hey A? Emm… i was wondering if you could be just a bit nice to our guest tonight. It’s kind of a big deal for me to have her here”. He stated.
Her? Our Governor is an elderly man, so who exactly have I been waiting for? I was about to do some analysis, but I stopped my brain from going through such unnecessary task.
“Her?… how important is this lady you speak of? Is she a popular celebrity or a scientist by chance? Did she save the planet or invented a gadget that would save the planet? Or… is she bring ground breaking ideas to Trace-tech Group which have been suffering because of your negligence even after I showed you the statistics?” I asked irritatedly.
First mistake was the move of Trace-tech from New York to Minnesota which was a major burst- a careless mistake that costed the company millions.
And now he’s even more distracted than when he first went to Shanghai few months ago.
“She’s important to me, so please behave” he sternly requested.
Soon we heard the doorbell ring and he quickly ran to the door to answer it amidst all the helps and Butler we have.
I stood up and straightened my sweatshirt, ready to welcome our guest for the tonight.
She came in with a smile as Cal held her hand like she was going to disappear any minute, but I was disappointed.
Honestly, she’s pretty- oozing elegance and wealth, nothing short for a Winfrey lady.
They got to where I was standing in the living room and she stared at me with a smile. I didn’t smile back, it’s a waste of effort for my muscles that have retired for the day.
“Heather, meet my little sister Ava. Ava, meet Heather… my girlfriend.” Cal introduced.
Girlfriend? Ha… now that’s a label she haven’t held in a long time. She stretched out her hand for a hand shake and I obliged.
“It’s nice to finally meet a real genius in person. Jeffery has told me a lot about you and how smart you are. Hope I’m not much of a trouble to you since you and I are from different intellectual background? Please be patient with me.” She cited with a smile.
So, she is as much a game player, as she’s rumored to be. By degrading herself in my home, as a nice host I’ll have to counter her and make her feel better about herself. I absolutely do not want to do that.
“Of course not. Our intellect has nothing to do with tonight’s meeting trust me, so make yourself comfortable. Your mediocrity will be overlooked tonight since you’re our guest” I stated with a straight face.
I got a sting eye from my brother to behave, as if… Let the night begin.
After what I said there was an awkward silence until he decided to break the ice.
“Why don’t we move to the dinning table, huh? I’m sure we can all put our intellect to rest as we eat…” he suggested, indirectly referring to me and i rolled my eyes.
We made our way to the dinner table and, boy- did Callum go all out with trying to impress Minnesota’s Barbie here. There was a complete course meal on the table and a bottle of 1954 Mablowe wine, very expensive.
We sat around the table and started eating. I swear I thought I’ll get indigestion from the meal with the both of them sending lovers signals from across the table.
“So, Heather… what is it that you do?” I asked breaking their eye contact.
She cleared her throat in an attempt to answer my question. I didn’t care at all about what she does, I just wanted to eat my food in peace and go to bed.
“Well, I was a businesswoman. I worked as the CEO of my family business, but retired and recently starting a small venture of my own. So, you can say I’m now an entrepreneur” She answered with a smile.
“And this small venture you said, is what exactly?” I asked again catching her by surprise.
“Oh… well, I plan to open a Destination Spa here in Minneapolis. I thought, why not combine the 2 things I love to do- business and beautification. Luckily, everything is well on its way.” She boasted.
“I see… well you’ve headed a company before, so you know luck has nothing to do with anything. And I’m sure you also know what’s at stack every minute you make a wrong decision that would affect the company, right?” I asked again and she nodded in affirmation.
“But, it bothers me that you’ve never really taken into consideration how your presence in my brother’s life is greatly affecting Trace-tech future? Then again, everything has to revolve only around you, doesn’t it?” I asked irritatedly and with as much sarcasm as I could muster.
“Ava?! That’s enough! She’s a guest and you’ll show some respect!…” he scolded annoyed.
“… babe, please ignore her. She’s always in a foul mood” he reassured her calmly after he just scolded me.
I scoffed in disbelief. Ignore her? She’s always in a foul mood? Wow, this is a whole new side of my brother I’ve not seen before.
“Ava?… I never really thought it was my place to worry about your brother’s company since he has been doing a great job all these years. But I’ll be more considerate, and I apologize for not being attentive.” she commented.
What a sly persona she’s got.
“Oh please, ignore me. I wasn’t trying to make you feel bad or anything. I just wanted you to know that you’re a distraction to Cal, but please, enjoy your meal” I concluded with a smile.
At this point I could tell Callum was fuming in anger because of me, but I ignored him and continued eating.
Whatever cloud that has blinded his sense of reasoning, I promise to unveil.
“How about you, Ava? I heard you’ve held the title of best hacker nationwide 2years in a row. That’s huge right?” she asked politely but I just simply nodded.
“And you work at TNet Telecoms, one of the big dogs in the communications industry. You’ve achieved so much in so little time and I admire that about you, greatly” she said stating the obvious.
It’s official, all of my senses seems to sting at this one and I my instincts are never wrong. To me, she’s just another rich dumb princess looking for a safety net fall into.
And anytime she opens her mouth to talk, I lose brain cell. I wasn’t looking for a compliment or admiration from her, I just wanted this sorry excuse for a dinner to end so I could rest.
I decided to be quiet through the rest of the dinner, and let them talk about different things that I don’t really care about in order to keep the awkward silence at bay.
After dinner, Cal decided to clear the table by himself even though I offered to do it and she offered to assist him.
He wanted Heather and I to talk alone, but I don’t want to do that. I hate to see him upset, and I’ve been extremely rude to him by being rude to his guest, so I indulged him and Heather and I moved to the living room.
“You have a pretty name, Ava. It’s so nice you and your brother invited me to your home and made dinner for me. Nobody have ever done that for me before, so I honestly appreciate it.” She said with a smile, but I didn’t comment.
“Look, I really like Jeffery- so much. He’s a brilliant, caring and wonderful guy, and I really want to make him happy. I know you and I don’t know each other well, but I was hoping if we could be friends- for your brother’s sake at least.” She continued in an attempt to be friendly.
I couldn’t take these anymore. I just wanted an evening to myself, not sit here and listen to a doll talk.
