For Reuben, this reaction was somewhat unexpected.
He frowned.
-I have no reason to lie to you,” he said, tossing some photos to Saul, who picked them up and saw that the girl in them was Sandra.
She looked a bit emaciated, but she was in good condition and had not suffered any kind of abuse.
Saul then believed Ruben.
-How did my daughter get into your hands? Jaime told me…
As soon as the name came out, Saul knew he had revealed himself and covered his mouth in panic.
Although Ruben had known for a long time that the person behind Saul was Jaime, it was still different that it came out of his own mouth.
-So the person behind you is really Jaime.
Saul was stupefied, his eyes twitching with panic. Seeing that he had been exposed, and with his daughter on his mind, he simply resigned himself and said:
-Yes, it was Jaime who authorized me to come here, and the reason I risked coming here this time was that Jaime used my daughter Sandra to threaten me -he said, gritting his teeth with hatred. I have had very little contact with my daughter since I joined the Santangel Group, but for the last few days I have not been able to find her or contact her anywhere. Jaime knows I’m looking for my daughter and he says he has Sandra and if I don’t help him with this, he’ll make sure I never see her again.
Saul’s eyes turned a little red.
He was an incompetent and cowardly man who had been found by Jaime. Moreover, he had pretended to be Umberto’s benefactor to try to earn a future and get some money so that he and Sandra could have a good life.
He admitted that he was greedy and vain, but this was nothing compared to the only family he had, his only daughter.
But he never imagined that Jaime would lie to him.
Sandra was not at Jaime’s house, but had been taken by Umberto.
Saul looked at Ruben with nervous eyes.
-What are you doing with my daughter? Why is she in your hands? Did you already know that Jaime sent me and that’s why you took my daughter?
Ruben was speechless.
-Not everyone is as shameless as Jaime. Lord Santangel is not going to do such filth.
Saul felt guilty listening to his words.
Because he was incapable, Sandra never listened to him, and she had her own big ideas. He, as a father, had no idea what Sandra had actually done, nor did he expect her to be so bold.
-Please let my daughter go, she is young and confused for a moment. I will do anything if you let her go. I can go and accuse Jaime…..
Ruben made a hand gesture and interrupted him.
-What accusation would you use?
Saul froze for a moment. Indeed, Jaime had let someone find him before and had trained him for months, but the man was so cautious that he hadn’t left the slightest trace. He had always been contacted by someone else, and had never actively met him or contacted him, aside from the only two times they had met.
Seeing him frozen in place, Ruben growled coldly.
-You still have a chance, but it’s up to you whether you’ll be able to turn this crime into a merit or not.
Saul looked at him stunned, his eyes snapped open.
After a long while, Saul walked calmly out of the Santangel Group building and headed for the place where he had previously met Jaime’s men.
The narrow, dreary alley was pitch black, with only a faint streetlight and a man standing under it.
Saul took a deep breath and quickly approached him.
The man stood on guard when he saw someone approaching, and Saul hastened to say:
-It’s me! I have brought something that the Dry Lord wants.
Hearing this, the man relaxed.
It was the first time Saul had ever done anything like this, and a cold sweat broke out on the tip of his nose.
-Where are the things? -The man’s voice was cold and stern.
Saul hurriedly handed over a small USB flash drive.
-All the information Mr. Seco wants is on it.
The man took the things, looked at them and was about to leave, but Saul hurried to stop him.
-Wait, wait!
-Is there anything else? -said the man a little impatiently.
-I have risked a lot to retrieve this information. Mr. Seco said before that he would return my daughter to me as soon as I had the material in my hands? -Saul said cautiously.
-I know, I know. When the auction ends tomorrow, Mr. Seco will return your daughter to you, can’t you still trust Mr. Seco?
The man finished coolly and left impatiently without waiting for Saul to speak.
When his figure disappeared, Saul’s eyes grew cold and his fingers clenched to death.
Jaime and his men were a bunch of liars, to cling to him and use him when they clearly didn’t have their daughter in their hands was outrageous!
A car drove by and stopped in front of the alley, Saul hurried over to it, opened the door and sat inside.
-Mr. Escribano, I have already delivered the material.
Ruben pursed his lips.
-Perfect, I’ve sent your daughter to where you live. Take her and go while Jaime prepares for tomorrow’s auction. Don’t go back to Sogen City. Jaime is merciless, after tomorrow, he will not forgive you.
Saul’s heart trembled at her words and he nodded.
-Yes, yes, we will leave tonight.
Then he paused for a moment, his face flushed with shame.
-Mr. Scribe, in fact, I am not the one who saved Mr. Santangel’s life. The year of the fire I did come to Sogen City, and when I saw the hotel in flames, I only came to observe it. I was too timid, cowardly and useless to do something so risky.
Ruben listened without changing his expression, tapped his fingers on the steering wheel and scoffed:
-This is something Lord Santangel discovered from the first day you approached the Santangel Group.
Saul was surprised.
-It was more than ten years ago, the hotel surveillance was destroyed and there were only a few witnesses, Jaime is one of them. He told me all the details, and authorized me to tell them. I even know more than the Santangels have investigated, how did Mr. Santangel know?
He felt really incredulous and curious at the same time, and approached Ruben.
Reuben was in a good mood, and since the story would come out tomorrow anyway, he didn’t beat around the bush and said to Saul:
-What a coincidence that the person who saved our Mr. Santangel’s life back then was none other than his father-in-law, and Mr. Santangel and Mrs. Santangel had also just recently found out by chance.
Ruben himself found it unbelievable when Umberto told him what had happened.
It was too great a coincidence, but it was the truth.
Saul was astonished, and it took him a while to pull himself together and sigh.
-It’s unbelievable.
The car soon pulled up to Saul’s building, and as soon as he got out, he saw a woman standing there. The light was dim, but he could tell from the silhouette that it was his daughter Sandra.
Saul’s eyes moved slightly and before he could say anything, he saw Sandra rushing towards him and hugging him tightly:
-Dad, let’s go, let’s leave Sogen City.
Sandra was dressed in a simple white T-shirt, and without any makeup, so she looked very young.
She was also a girl in her early twenties, who had been blinded by glamour and forced by Jaime to think things she shouldn’t have.
These last few days cooped up with Santangel’s family, with no cell phone and no one to talk to, had also given her time to think a lot in silence.
Sandra had realized that what did not belong to her from the beginning, would never belong to her.
It was better to take it one step at a time, work hard to achieve your ambitions and fight for what you want.
She did, and so did her father.
It is unrealistic to rely on this kind of trickery and luck.
Sandra was disillusioned, she used to rely on her good looks, but found that her tactics didn’t work on people who had real taste and insight.
In the end, she was just a plaything for the rich, and when she grew old, she would be abandoned.
She was frustrated enough by her successive events with Umberto and Michael. Besides, she was almost killed by Umberto.
