Chapter 22: I’ve promised myself

Book:The Blind Wife Published:2024-6-3

When Umberto went blank, Miguel embraced Albina, who leaned meekly without refusing.
After Miguel and Albina left the room, Umberto bowed his head, looked at his hands and said to himself “He thinks I’m a hog!”
-Umberto -said restlessly Yolanda, who tugged at his sleeve.
Taking a deep breath, Umberto, whose eyes were full of tears, answered sadly:
-I have to go to the company.
But at this moment Yolanda suddenly cried out:
-You could not forget Albina for the past three years, I am sure you have fallen in love with her!
-No!” turned suddenly Umberto, who was looking at Yolanda with bloodshot eyes.
Surprised, Yolanda took off her shirt, biting her lip.
A large scar that appeared on her white skin made her slender body look less than perfect.
-Yolanda -saying with a hoarse voice, Umberto, who tried to calm down, approached the girl and put her shirt on.
Unable to stop crying, Yolanda continued:
-Remember that I saved you from the fire? You swore to me that you would live with me forever, don’t regret it!
Umberto clenched his fist and answered desperately:
-Of course.
Yolanda smiled, threw herself into his arms and said:
-Don’t disappoint me. If you don’t, I will die in front of you.
-Okay,” Umberto, disappointed, was unable to move, as if he had become a rigid corpse.
-Tomorrow you’re going to divorce Albina, okay?
-Okay.
Having received the answer she expected, Yolanda burst with satisfaction, “You’ll never be able to beat me, Albina. As much as Umberto loves you, I’m his only option.”

Miguel took Albina to his office to help her bandage the wound on her finger. Sitting next to the girl, Miguel asked in distress:
-Albina, does it hurt?
-No!” answered Yolanda.
-That’s impossible!
Without raising her head, she said in a weak voice:
-My heart hurts, not my finger.

That night, Umberto smoked two full packs of cigarettes on the balcony and Albina sat on the bed without gluing her eyes.
The next morning, Umberto and Albina came to the town hall to apply for a divorce certificate.
Lined up with Umberto, Albina concentrated on what the bride and groom were talking about their futures.
One girl nervously arranged one and whispered to the groom:
-I’m so nervous. I didn’t imagine the town hall looked like this.
Albina pouted when she heard this.
Three years ago, when she got married, she couldn’t see the town hall. Today when she was here to divorce the man she loved, she couldn’t see what it looked like either.
A while later, Umberto suddenly said in a hoarse voice:
-It’s our turn.
As Albina was about to enter the office, Umberto grabbed her arm, pressed him against the wall, kissed him suddenly, and let go before she could react quickly.
Seeing this scene, the couple behind them continued to jeer:
-Your husband looked cold, but he really has been more romantic than we imagined. No doubt he loves you very much,” said an excited girl to Albina.
Looking at the girl, Albina wiped her lips,
-We are here to get a divorce.
Everyone went blank at her words.
The girl was also surprised. Since she was here to get a divorce, why would this man kiss her like that? Obviously, he still loved her.
The two filled out the form, got the seal stamped, and got the divorce certificate, which ended the marriage.
When Albina stood up, Umberto looked at her pale face and dark eyes that were mingled with patience and helplessness,
-Albina, I am getting engaged to Yolanda in three days.
