Nate’s POV
I moped at Rex as he stood there in his casual wear for our school on Wednesdays. He had some blood on his hands and when he saw me look at them he rolled his eyes and cleaned them with a handkerchief he brought out of his pocket and then he threw it on the floor.
” Dad, I’ve taken out the men from the drug cartel who didn’t cooperate.” He said as he adjusted the school bag he was putting on.
So he’s an assassin? Then why the hell was he at school with me? How didn’t he figure out that I was Big D’s son from the start?
” Great job as always” Big D said with a grin as he got up from his chair and embraced Rex.
” Wait, wait, wait. If you’ve been schooling with me for two years now, why didn’t you sell me out since then? Also, how the hell are you older than me?”
Rex chuckled and looked at Big D who answered in his stead.
” Your mother over there had bribed the doctor who helped her deliver you at home to make a fake copy of your attributes in case anyone came looking for you. So when I came looking for you, the description said you had jet black hair and blue eyes, over the years, I searched for you but nothing..” I looked at my mom briefly and she looked away.
” I knew something was up, so I gave up – for fourteen years I didn’t search for you until I got an idea, how about I track down Jane’s last actions before she suddenly disappeared from the face of the Earth and bingo – Plastic surgeon gave me the details I needed to know.
I moved some of my men here two years back but they were no good. Too clumsy for my liking- got too many people killed for coming into their poor hideout”
” Dad the story’s getting kinda long. I’ve gotta go to school and you know, be with my girlfriend” Rex said and I glared at him.
” Right, long story short, with the description the man gave me, I tracked your mom but the boy who lived with her didn’t match the description. So I went back to the doctor that delivered you, threatened him and he confessed that you were blonde.” He said with so much excitement.
” You know, Damien studying at your school was a coincidence. You see his mom – Angel couldn’t give birth to him so we got a surrogate mom for him – the actress, she owed me plenty so I spared her life as long as she took care of my son. Whatever she chose to do next wasn’t my concern.”
” There you have it, question answered”
” Although I’m fairly certain Damien knew you were my son all along, he didn’t just want me to be carried away and maybe love you more than I love him” Big D whispered to me before he blew the smoke from his cigar into my face and walked back to his seat.
” Well, now that I have you, we’ll be going back to London. I’m tired of this shit hole.” He said and as he snapped his fingers to another direction and two men came forward.
” Take him to his room. Also, you can let Jane use the shower now”
” You’re a monster” I spat at him and he grinned and said to me ” from what Damien’s told me, so are you”
As the guys tried to usher us upstairs to what I assumed to be our rooms, I gave up, if the police haven’t come then Big D’s men probably murdered them.
” Don’t touch her!” I growled to one of the men who tried to take my mom upstairs as I carried her in my arms. She looked at me, surprised at my act and I looked away, this was highly uncomfortable for me.
I barely took a step through the stairs when I heard a loud noise, the police had bombed the first entry into their lair.
Big D glared at me before he told more men to make sure they got me and my mother out of town. Another loud bang and the rest of the men took positions waiting expectantly for when they’d blow up the last door. He signaled his men and they all went upstairs and briskly tossed bulletproof vests to everyone and they put it on.
Rex was tossed a gun and smirked when he glanced my way and saw my surprised expression and then he covered his face with a mask just like the rest of them.
Just then, the last bang was heard and the few men who’d gone back downstairs started shooting and so did the police. They kept on shooting until they noticed no one was shooting back.
Some of the policemen moved into the room and Big D’s men started shooting from the stairs with Rex behind them. I couldn’t exactly tell what happened because Big D’s men took my mom and I into another empty room and locked us in there with Big D and his mistress while they stood in front of the door, aiming at it with their guns.
He was so confident that nothing would happen that he sat down on his chair, operating his phone and grinning.
” You’re kidding, you’re just gonna sit there and play games while your men are probably getting killed?”
” Isn’t that what you want though?” Angel said and I ignored her.
” My men are killing the policemen, that’s what’s happening,” he said and after a while, the gunshots stopped.
The door opened abruptly and Rex came through with other men.
” Their dead,” he said and Big D got up and headed downstairs, he didn’t even ask Rex if he was sure.
I bit my lip in frustration as I realized that the police’s plan had failed.
” Let’s go son. Damien, you come with us too” Big D said and we followed him down the stairs and my mom held onto me as we passed several dead bodies on the floor.
” It’s gonna be fine” I assured her with a whisper and she buried her face in my side as I held until her. Rex and the rest of Big D’s men who were still alive and still more than half their previous number went out of the building and I realized that their hideout this time was a mechanic shop.
Big D entered his car – a black SUV along with angel and Rex – no Damien and some other men. While three other men entered the other SUV with my mom and I and they drove off.
” I’m so sorry Nate ” my mom said to me.
“No mom, I’m sorry I caused you so much trouble”
She stared at me once more surprised at my kindness towards her.
” What?”
” You called me mom” she said her voice shaking and then she started sobbing.
” I’m sorry Nate, I shouldn’t have made you -”
” – mom, please stop it!” I said feeling uncomfortable. The three men – one in the driver’s seat, the other in the passenger side in front and one with us at the back pointing a gun at us didn’t seem to be concerned about her sobbing. They were concerned about something else.
” Who the hell are those?” The one at the front said and I turned around to find the van detective Mason had driven behind us.
” Aren’t your men supposed to be behind us?” I asked and the one beside me glared at me.
” Did you organize this whole thing kid?” The man said in a strange accent.
” I wish I were that smart”
” If you weren’t Big D’s son I’d have punched you in the face. Dude drive faster!” He yelled to the one driving but things took a new turn when the policemen started shooting at us.
I crouched and covered my mom as the man at the back lowered the glass by the window and shot back, the other in the front also did the same. I turned back to see who was shooting and scoffed when I saw bill, he went back inside and seemed to exchange seating position with detective Mason as he brought his head out through the window and all it took was one shot, and the man at the back was wounded.
He yelled as he held his right arm he was using to shoot. ” Shit,” I said when I realized that he’d dropped the gun and was trying to reach with his other hand for another behind the headrest of the car but then another shot from detective Mason hit his other hand and he screamed in pain.
I quickly grabbed the gun and without hesitation, I shot the one in the front and placed the gun on the head of the one driving, and said.
” Park the fucking car”
He looked at me from the corner of his eyes and said ” you’re bluffing kid”
” Did I bluff with your friend over here?” I said and he looked at the corpse of his partner and gulped.
” Nate gun!” My mom yelled making me see that he’d been reaching out for a gun in his pocket. I shot him in the head without thinking twice and I opened the door as the car lost control and shoved his body out as I drove the car out of the lane of a trailer coming in the opposite direction.
” Mom help me with the other one,” I said and as I pressed the button unlocking the car, she pushed the other one out and I parked the car and watched as Big D’s car kept driving. He was running and I smirked at the thought of that.
” You good Nate?” Detective Mason said as he parked his car and looked at me. I gave him a thumbs up and right after that I got out and puked.
” The boy’s got his father’s blood,” Bill said as he looked at the two dead bodies on the road. As other police cars pursued Big D’s car in a hot chase.
” Don’t die on me mate” detective Mason said as he looked at the guy whose hands he’d shot.
