Cheney’s pov
I intentionally left the door open when I went out just now. I really heard the conversation.
I looked inside and then walked in.
I walked to the hospital bed and took a seat. I just looked at her and didn’t say anything.
I just know now, she just asked me if the reason for my betrayal by the person I love the most will be revealed. It’s no surprise she was stimulated.
It was her favorite father, and her mother, who gave birth to her, was the other one.
How can she feel painless and not sad when she knows this?
She had tears in her eyes and a sorrowful look on her face as she looked at me. “You’ve heard it, and it’s ridiculous, right? I used to believe that the most beautiful feeling in the world is love, rather than affection, since I saw my father adore my mother with my own eyes. My childhood dream was to find a man who loved me as much as my father did, marry and have children, and love each other, but it turns out that… love may also be poisoned by impurities.”
“You can’t count as love if you’re mixed with impurities. It’s only fair to say that your father spent love on the wrong person, and that your mother does not deserve your father’s affection.”
She drew her eyes closed. “But, even if it was tainted with impurities, she used to like it, right?
Why is she so vicious, joining up with others to harm my father? That man is a beast. I’m at a loss for words. I’m at a loss as to what to do.”
For a little moment, I was deafeningly silent. “How can you blame your mother for this? What did Quincy’s said to you?”
She opened her eyes and sighed, “Quincy said that my father gave up his name because he had someone he wanted to guard. At that moment, I suddenly realized that only my mother and I could make my father give up everything. When I came home, I opened the safe and saw that my father kept all the previous documents in the safe, but kept the Cross River Bridge in the book because he knew that someone would move the files he kept after he died. Besides me, only my mother can touch the safe. I can’t hurt my father, so the person my father is guarding can only be my mother. My mom was on Brent’s side of the Cross River Bridge, which is why my dad was so desperate.” She said, her hands covering her cheeks.
“My father is completely despicable. What a terrible price he had to pay for his mistake. Despite  reputation, life, and… there is another person who has the most basic trust in love.”
She let go of her hand and looked at me with a sad expression on her face. “Cheney, you can say how painful it must have been for my father at that time, so he jumped from the bridge without hesitation. When he needed it the most, a woman who had lived with him for 20 years stood beside him. What a helpless man my father should be.”
To comfort her, I raised my hand and softly rubbed the back of her hand. Besides, I was at a loss for words to comfort her.
She breathed hard several times and calmed her mood.
When she opened her eyes again, there was a touch of ruthlessness in her eyes. “My dad shouldn’t have been wronged so much, but he still had a reputation of not being innocent. He put the drawings in his most cherished architectural book. He knew that my mother would never touch it in her life, but I would read it. My father must be unwilling, so he would leave me such important evidence, and he wanted me to rehabilitate him. Cheney, I have to clear my father’s name. I have to go to war with the Brennan group. I have to reverse his conviction.”
I held her hand in mine and my eyes were locked on her. “As long as you think about it, I’ll help you.”
“I think clearly, and I can’t think any clearer than that. I played cards with my mom today. Brent isn’t a fool. As long as my mother goes back and tells him about it, he should be able to figure out what I’m looking into. I don’t have any choice but to move forward.”
“Who says you don’t have it?” I raised my brow and clenched my lips. “I am your retreat.”
She looked at me with a mixture of appreciation and sadness in her eyes. “I appreciate it.”
I rubbed her head unconsciously with my hand.
She shrank her neck slightly, and I took back my hand and teased, “Silly.”
She blushed. “Well, I’d like to meet engineer Tyrone.”
“I’ll go with you.”
“But, aren’t you busy?”
“Even if I leave the company, it will continue to operate. Otherwise, I would have spent a large amount of my monthly salary. What’s the use of hiring so many people?”
She nodded her head.
Krista’s pov
To tell the truth, I’m afraid to go abroad alone, and I am really afraid of how things might be different. With his company, I feel at ease. I stayed in the hospital for a night, and I really wanted to leave the hospital the next day.
Cheney asked Gia to book us a flight out of the country at two o’clock that afternoon.
At 5:00 p. m. local time, the two of us got off the plane from Orly in Paris.
It was already 7:00 p. m. when we checked into the hotel.
When I entered the room, I lay in bed for a few minutes because I was a little tired.
Cheney went to the side and called Tyrone immediately.
Tyrone is in the hospital with his children because his grandson is ill. He made an appointment with us and will come to the hotel to meet us at ten o’clock the next morning.
I went out to eat with him, enjoying the night scenery while eating. Cheney said, “Actually, it’s not bad here, is it? When we are old, we will return here and enjoy the same scenery.”
I suddenly looked at him, old?
He… has me in his future plans. But I never thought about getting old with him once.
He raised his eyebrows. “Why are you looking at me like that? Didn’t you just say it was nice here?”
I looked away and hesitated to say something. “Things do change as we get older.”
He put down his knife and fork and narrowed his eyes. “Don’t tell me again that you have no intentions of living with me in the future.”
I asked, “Are you really planning on growing old with me?”
“Otherwise you might think that I will divorce you? I have clearly said many times that this marriage will work and I have no plans on leaving you any time soon. You don’t really listen to me.” He said coldly.
I snuffed. “I didn’t turn a deaf ear, I just couldn’t see how things are in the future.”
“Then you can fantasize from now on, it should not be too difficult.”
I shook my head. “It’s hard, because I know clearly that you don’t love me, and a marriage without love… is actually hard to manage.”
He turned his head and smiled. “Do you have to love someone in order to be married?”
“Isn’t love the foundation of marriage?”
He sneered, “I think the most important thing in marriage is trust. Your parents started their marriage on the basis of love, and your father loved your mother until the day of her death, but what happened? Do you think their marriage was happy?”
The expression on my face has changed a lot. “Yes… their marriage seems to be happy, but it is only a phantom.”
I also slowly put down my knife and fork, picked up my glass and sipped my wine. “There was this one time, because my parents were so happy. I really believed that there was love in this world, but now… I don’t think love is true at all.”
“Since you don’t believe in love, what’s the difference between living a lifetime with me and living a lifetime with others? After all its lifetime we’re talking about. The most important thing is that I have plenty of capital, which can make your life a lot better and keep you at ease for the rest of your life. Shouldn’t I be your best choice?” His words silenced me for quite a while.
When I lived with Cheney, I found that he was not as cold-blooded and ruthless as rumored. He was approachable and kind. Different from how other people viewed him. Since I no longer believe in love, why not choose one who is really more comfortable to be with than those hypocrites instead of living together? I looked up at Cheney, and as I was getting along, he… seemed to be a good choice.
“What are you thinking? Don’t think too much, don’t you think what I said makes sense?” He raised his chin.
