CHAPTER 28

Book:The Spell Published:2024-5-1

A celebration of the Lunar New Year has started to let in good luck and ward off bad spirits all throughout the year. With the old year out and a new one in, people have gathered at the beach while some must be sitting at home with their families and relatives, catching up on what they have been doing. Zane and I somehow managed to find a place at the beach far away from people, where there was no one around us. I wore a white maxi dress and left my hair open, a floral tiara was placed on my head. It is said that it brings good luck if you wear white on the New Year’s eve at the beach. Zane was dressed up in a plain light blue shirt and denim jeans.
“Things were so different this time last year”
“This year’s better and the coming year will be even better” he said, tangling his fingers into mine.
“I hope so” I said. All the things that has happened this year flashed in front of my eyes as if I was watching some movie on a projector. Meeting Zane was the best and my favourite thing that has happened this year, the worst thing was me jumping off the terrace. I felt uneasy and a little discomfort as the terror hit me when my thoughts stopped at Gizelle. She has done enough damage to my life. Because of her, my best friend has been separated from me, because of her I’m a vampire today. I made Zane promise me that he won’t go taking revenge from Gizelle, I somehow convinced him and made him promise me that he won’t do anything, but I’m afraid, what if he breaks the promise? The way she was threatening me, I am afraid that she might cause Zane harm if he fights her or even worse, she might stake him like she had said before. A sigh of relief rushed through my veins as I realized that if Zane had to do anything, he must’ve already done it till now, but he didn’t. He won’t break my promise, I was now assured. It’s better to let go of old bitter memories as they only ruin our present and future, and I don’t want to step in 2019 with bitter memories of the past. I want my new year to be filled with lots of happiness and love.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I couldn’t realize that the countdown to the new year has already begun.
FIVE FOUR THREE TWO ONE ZERO and an explosion of bright colours filled the dark sky that lightened up everyone’s eyes. 2019 was welcomed with the fireworks, it was welcomed with the burst of colours exploding in the night sky, raining down brilliant shades of green, blue, purple and even golden. Zane put forth two empty glasses which he then filled with champagne before handing one to me.
“Happy New Year” he wished, raising his glass.
“May this year be good to us and brings loads of happiness in our lives” I said, doing the same.
We layed on the sand at the beach and talked for a while before Zane got a jerk and he stood up as if he were a pop-up card, his such sudden actions always scares me.
“What? You’re okay?” I asked, sitting up straight.
“Stand up fast” he said
“What? But why?” I asked with a frown.
“Just stand up. Quick. No more delay” his urgency made me stand up on my legs. Don’t know what happened to him suddenly. He was fine till now and then he wants me to stand up.
“What are you doing?” I asked confused when he knelt down in front of me. He then took my hand into his and removed a ring from his pocket before asking “Will you marry me?” I was shocked, surprised but also overwhelmed at the same time. Tears gathered in the corner of my eye but these tears were the tears of happiness.
“Yes” I said wiping away my tears and nodding vigorously.
“Yess!!” he jumped high in the air in excitement and then twirled me around. He was so happy that he forgot to place the ring in my finger.
“Zane, ring” I reminded him and then he placed that beautiful diamond ring in my finger. I laughed and smiled all night as we danced, Zane wasn’t ready to leave me, he kept twirling me. While we were happily engaged, I knew that this new year has only good things in store for us and there were no boundaries to my happiness.
The next morning I woke up in my room, I don’t remember walking here, Zane must’ve carried me all the way from the beach since I was fast asleep in his arms. I recalled the moment when he put the ring into my finger and blushed stupidly. Great start to 2019, I thought. But where is Zane? Every morning he wakes me up with a kiss and warm embrace, so where is he today? I put my feet into the slippers and just when I was about to leave the room in search of Zane, my eyes landed on the table, where a note was kept under a heavy book. I went near it and opened it.
It was a letter for me from Zane –
‘Dear Blaire,
When you wake up, I’ll be gone for some important work. It was urgent and you were sleeping so I didn’t find it appropriate to disturb you. But I’ll be back soon, I promise. And when I get back I’ll make you my wife. Till then, take care of yourself.
Yours,
Zane. ‘
Silly guy, left without me. What am I suppose to do here, alone? I’ll get super bore without him. Anyways I just hope that he returns soon, also I can’t wait to marry him and be Mrs Blaire Giezmann. I jumped on my bed in excitement as if it were a trampoline. Mrs. Blaire Giezmann sounds so good and so perfect. I must inform Suzan about this, I’m sure, she’d be happy for the two of us. In fact not just her, Eric and Adam too would be happy on hearing our marriage news.
