These words caused Sophia’s vision to darken. “How could he get hit by a construction truck out of nowhere? What exactly happened!?” she exclaimed.
“Your father and I were driving out for a leisure trip when a construction truck ran a red light and crashed into our car…” Jessica sobbed, wiping her tears and nose.
Leo stepped forward to console them. “Jessica, Sophia, don’t worry too much. He will be fine. Good things happen to good people.”
Jessica turned to look at Leo, instinctively wanting to scold him, but then she felt it was inappropriate to argue in such a situation. She simply gave him a sideways glance, as if he didn’t exist.
Jessica was a petty woman who had harbored a grudge against Leo for the incident when he hit her before.
“Mom, how long has Dad been inside, and which doctor is operating on him?” Sophia asked.
Jessica wiped her tears and replied, “It’s been an hour since he went in. I don’t know the doctors at Hill Crest General Hospital, but there are several of them in the operating room.”
“I have a classmate who is a surgeon at Hill Crest General Hospital. Leo, let’s go to the doctor’s office and ask,” Sophia suggested.
With that, Sophia led Leo to the doctor’s office.
Inside the office, there was a female doctor wearing a white coat. When she heard the knock on the door, she looked up and asked, “Can I help you?”
“Hello, may I ask which doctor is performing surgery on my father?” Sophia inquired.
The female doctor looked puzzled. “Surgery on your father?”
“Yes, the surgeon currently performing surgery on the second floor,” Sophia explained.
The doctor nodded and replied, “The operating surgeon is Dr. Fox.”
“Dr. Fox, is it Dr. Archie Fox?” Sophia asked uncertainly.
“Yes, Dr. Fox is the operating surgeon. Your father will be fine, don’t worry,” the doctor reassured.
When mentioning Dr. Fox, the doctor’s eyes sparkled with a different light, even a hint of admiration.
Archie was an outstanding figure at Hill Crest General Hospital. Not only was he tall and handsome, but his medical skills were top-notch, not only in Langstel but also in the entire country.
Archie was an overseas returnee with dual doctoral degrees in medicine and biology. He could have stayed at Asnuwana with a high salary, but for the sake of his parents, he chose to return to his birthplace, Langstel.
As the saying goes, gold will shine wherever it is placed.
Within a year of joining Hill Crest General Hospital, Archie had been promoted to the position of chief physician solely based on his abilities.
Just a month ago, he successfully performed a major surgical operation and received high recognition from the international medical community.
The doctor’s affirmative response relieved Sophia.
She never expected that the surgeon operating on her father would turn out to be her college friend. Sophia was well aware of Archie’s abilities and medical skills. As long as Archie was involved, her father would most likely be out of danger.
“By the way, Doctor, is my father’s condition serious?” Sophia inquired, looking at the female doctor once again.
The female doctor had seen Martin being taken into the operating room. After thinking for a moment, she said, “It’s hard to say. We’ll have to wait for the results of the surgery. Please be patient. The surgery should be almost finished.”
After thanking the female doctor, Sophia pulled Leo out of the doctor’s office.
Just as they had reached the outside of the operating room, a male doctor wearing a white coat walked out. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, took off his mask, and said, “Are the family members here? The patient is now out of danger.”
“Doctor, really? Thank you so much,” Jessica’s face relaxed, and she quickly thanked the young doctor.
“Dr. Fox, how is my dad’s condition now?” Sophia approached the young doctor, still feeling worried.
Sophia was well aware that being out of danger didn’t mean everything was fine.
When Archie saw Sophia standing in front of him, he couldn’t help but show a surprised expression. “Sophia!? The patient in the operating room is your father?”
“Yes,” Sophia nodded.
Speaking of which, Sophia and this senior schoolmate of hers hadn’t seen each other for almost four years.
They had met during their time in the student council, and although their relationship wasn’t particularly close, it was still decent.
In addition, Sophia knew that Archie had secretly pursued her during their university days.
After the surprise, Archie smiled at Sophia. “What a coincidence. Don’t worry, Mr. Henley is out of danger now, and all his vital signs are gradually returning to normal.”
If it’s said that men can be charming when they smile, then Archie was a perfect example. Ordinary women with weak willpower would be defenseless against Archie’s smile.
Sophia extended her right hand to Archie and thanked him. “Dr. Fox, thank you.”
“Oh, come on, don’t be so formal. We’re old classmates, so let’s keep it as before. Just call me Archie,” Archie said, taking off his gloves and shaking Sophia’s right hand.
“Dr. Fox, thank you,” Leo walked up to Sophia’s side and expressed his gratitude.
Archie withdrew his right hand and glanced at Leo. He had already guessed Leo’s identity, but still asked, “And who are you?”
“I’m Sophia’s partner, my name is Leo,” Leo replied with a faint smile.
“So, you’re Sophia’s husband. Nice to meet you,” Archie’s smile gradually faded, and a barely noticeable coldness appeared in his eyes.
Then, Archie looked at Sophia, hesitated for a moment, and said, “Sophia, I’m a doctor, and you’re the patient’s family member, so there’s something I must tell you in advance.”
“What’s wrong?” Sophia felt her heart tighten when she saw Archie’s serious expression.
At that moment, Archie’s assistant walked out of the operating room, holding a clipboard in his hand.
Archie signaled to his assistant, and the assistant handed the clipboard to Sophia.
Sophia took the clipboard and looked at it. Her face suddenly changed, and she exclaimed, “What? Amputation is needed!?”
“Yes, the injury to Mr. Henley’s left knee is severe, and the knee bone is exposed. If we don’t amputate, there is a high risk of muscle tissue necrosis, which could lead to gangrene in the entire leg and endanger his life,” Archie sighed and spoke truthfully.
From Archie’s professional perspective, apart from amputation, there were no better options for Martin’s current condition.
Jessica snatched the clipboard from Sophia’s hand and looked at it. Her body trembled for a moment, and she almost fell to the ground.
“No amputation! We can’t amputate! After amputation, Martin will become a disabled person!” Jessica cried out in despair.
Jessica and Martin had been married for nearly thirty years, and to say that there was no affection between them would be a lie.
Leaving that aside, Jessica didn’t want to take care of a legless invalid.
