The Vice President couldn’t help but sigh and said, “Dr. Chaplin, the plan you just mentioned falls under conservative treatment, with minimal side effects. However, Paul has already undergone this treatment in foreign hospitals, and it had little to no effect.”
Another doctor raised his hand and asked, “Is minimally invasive nerve repair technology feasible?”
Vice President Barry Charley shook his head again, “This technology is not mature yet, and for Paul’s condition, it has minimal effect with high risks.”
Following this, various doctors and experts at the meeting provided some proposals, all lacking feasibility.
After sitting here for most of the day, hearing one after another that this won’t work and that won’t work, Will couldn’t help but stand up. With some anger in his voice, he spoke in somewhat stiff Mandarin, “Your hospital is well-known. Today, so many expert doctors are invited here, and you can’t even come up with a treatment plan!?”
Will no longer expected the hospital to completely cure his father. He just hoped to preserve his father’s life for a while, giving him more time. Why, whether it’s a foreign hospital or a hospital here, can’t they even achieve this?
Will continued loudly, “We’ve traveled a long way with our father to seek treatment here. If you can’t effectively control my father’s condition, I will specifically write an article and publish it to major foreign media, letting the whole world know how backward the medical level in Langstel is!”
Lisa also stood up from her chair, expressing her anger, “Langstel’s doctors and medical standards are so disappointing. Abroad, at least doctors can come up with some ways to treat my father, but here, you can only sit around and talk big!”
Seeing such a strong reaction from the patient’s family, Vice President Charley hurriedly explained, “Miss Lisa, you have misunderstood us. The disease your father is suffering from becomes more severe in the later stages. I can affirm that even in the best hospitals abroad, doctors there would be helpless too.”
With Vice President Charley’s explanation, Lisa’s expression became even more angry, “I don’t want to hear these useless words. My father is lying in your hospital now. If you can’t effectively control his condition, then I will have to take some extreme measures.”
Will and Lisa had a strong bond with Paul since childhood. When they were still children, their mother divorced their father, and it was Paul who single-handedly raised the two of them.
Now, Will and Lisa didn’t expect their father’s illness to be completely cured. They just hoped that their father could live a little longer so that they could spend more time with him.
Under the pressure from Will and Lisa, Dr. Beck couldn’t help but stand up and said loudly, “Vice President Charley, I personally recommend performing surgery! Through surgery, we can conduct nerve guidance and repair, restoring normal breathing for the patient. This way, the patient can have more treatment time and opportunities.”
Dr. Chaplin quickly retorted, “No, the risks of surgery are too high, and the patient’s current physical condition can’t withstand it!”
Dr. Chaplin spoke the truth. Dr. Beck, feeling helpless, shrugged and countered, “All the proposals everyone offered just now have been rejected. If we don’t proceed with surgery now, what other effective options do we have?”
Dr. Beck’s question silenced the room. The various expert doctors and specialists looked at each other, unsure of what to do.
Seeing the hesitation, Dr. Beck spoke forcefully again, “If none of you has a better solution, then let’s go for the surgery. I’ll do it, and if it fails, I’ll bear the consequences!”
Everyone in the room knew what the consequences would be if the surgery failed. They wondered if Dr. Beck had gone mad, risking everything for this. Was it worth it?
There was no doubt that if Dr. Beck’s surgery failed, Will and Lisa would discredit Dr. Beck and would no longer be able to work here.
Even if the surgery were successful, it would only give Paul one or two more years to live. The significance seemed small, and it wasn’t worth risking their promising futures for it.
In the meeting room, Vice President Charley, along with other experts and chief physicians, looked at Dr. Beck with admiration and respect. In the face of difficulty, this person didn’t choose to retreat but instead faced it head-on, truly deserving of admiration.
Leo looked serious, seemingly contemplating something.
“Dr. Bloomer, do you have a better solution for Paul’s condition?” Dr. Mond couldn’t help but ask.
Leo shook his head slightly. He hadn’t seen Paul himself, so he couldn’t make conclusions.
Dr. Quiller, keeping an eye on Leo, sneered, “Dr. Mond, I don’t think you need to consult this guy. He doesn’t understand anything; he’s just pretending.”
The bespectacled man quickly agreed, “I think he must be just an intern. Dr. Mond, he probably just started working and was assigned to you. You should teach him since he’s one of those who don’t understand but pretend to.”
Dr. Mond couldn’t be bothered with these two self-righteous individuals behind him.
After Dr. Beck finished speaking, he paused for a moment. Seeing no one opposing, he continued, “Since no one has objections, let’s discuss the detailed procedure of the surgery.”
Will turned to Dr. Beck and asked, “Doctor, since you want to perform the surgery, may I ask, what’s the probability of its success?”
Will was shrewd. He could infer from everyone’s reactions that the surgery carried significant risks, hence the question.
Dr. Beck hesitated for a moment but truthfully responded, “If I perform the surgery, the success rate is… around forty-five percent.”
“What did you say!?” Lisa suddenly exclaimed, her voice filled with anger. “A mere forty-five percent success rate, not even half. Are you trying to kill my father!?”
Dr. Beck looked at Lisa, his expression stern, “Miss Lisa, I understand your desperation to save your father. I can tell you unequivocally, if I don’t perform the surgery, your father won’t last more than two months!”
Lisa opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but the last word wouldn’t come out. Indeed, she knew her father’s condition well. Without taking the risk of surgery, it was likely her father wouldn’t survive for more than two months.
At this moment, President Mackintosh, who had been silent, stood up. He looked at Will and Lisa, saying, “Mr. Will, Miss Lisa, Dr. Beck is the most skilled surgeon in our hospital and stands out in all over our country. Given your father’s current condition, I believe allowing Dr. Beck to perform the surgery is a viable option.”
President Mackintosh understood that since they had accepted Paul, there was no turning back. They could only let Dr. Beck take a gamble. If Dr. Beck lost the bet, President Mackintosh would share the responsibility with him.
