Someone interjected, “Do you guys know who Dr. Jennings from Read Clinic offended? I heard he not only sold his clinic but also left Langstel. What’s more, the entire Langstel medical community is undergoing a new round of reforms because of the Read Clinic incident.”
“No doubt about it. Dr. Jennings must have offended some powerful and influential family’s scion. I heard the Director of the Department of Health personally got involved.”
“I looked into it, and it seems like Read Clinic didn’t offend any wealthy heirs. Instead, someone challenged them in terms of medical expertise,” Lawrence proudly stated, subtly showcasing his connections.
“Challenged them?” A girl’s face immediately displayed curiosity. “Read Clinic must have had a strong background. Who had the audacity to challenge them?”
Lawrence continued, “Based on what I know, it was a young man, and he possesses exceptional medical skills.”
Leo, who had remained silent until now, raised an eyebrow. He hadn’t expected his actions to become the subject of conversation among these wealthy people.
“A young traditional Chinese medicine practitioner? I’ve never heard of such a person in Langstel. Who could he be?” Everyone looked at Lawrence with interest.
Lawrence shook his head. “I haven’t yet identified his specific identity, but according to my father’s speculation, he’s most likely a privileged scion visiting Langstel from the North.”
Leo took a sip of tea and, upon hearing Lawrence’s words, couldn’t help but spit it out. He then revealed a smile.
Leo’s uncharacteristic reaction made Lawrence furrow his brow, and he demanded, “What’s so funny?”
“This guy is so unknown that he just spat out tea without any manners!”
“Suddenly burst into laughter for no reason, probably a fool.”
“I bet it’s just for attention because no one’s paying any to him!”
Although the guests knew that Leo was accompanying Rosemary, they didn’t hesitate to tease and scold him, including Rosemary herself. She had brought Leo to the conference to pretend to be her boyfriend and deter some unwanted attention, but she didn’t want him to embarrass her.
“Sorry, everyone, and Mr. Lytton. I remembered a joke, and I couldn’t help but laugh. My apologies, please continue.” Leo struggled to suppress his amusement, offering a rather insincere apology to the others.
Their attention finally shifted away from Leo, and they resumed discussing the previous topic.
“I think Mr. Lytton’s father’s speculation makes sense. The young man with medical skills should be from the North,” the man in the suit agreed with Lawrence’s words. “I asked my father to inquire with the Director of the Department of Health, but he refused to divulge anything. What does that indicate?”
“If even the Director of the Department of Health is keeping things under wraps, I understand. The background of that young man is far from ordinary,” someone chimed in.
“Absolutely, it seems like we should be careful when we’re out in the future. We must avoid stirring trouble with people who come from the North.”
“If only we knew his name, we could try to make friends with him.”
Leo did his best to contain his laughter, but his body’s natural reaction was noticed by Rosemary. She rolled her eyes at Leo and lightly tapped his hand with her fork. “Hey, Leo, what’s so funny? What’s making you laugh?”
Lawrence saw Rosemary’s action, and it seemed like a affectionate exchange to him. This immediately fueled his smoldering frustration. He abruptly stood up, pointed at Leo, and demanded, “What’s so amusing, you? Are you finding our conversation hilarious?”
Leo, repeatedly waving his hands in apology, said, “I’m really sorry; I just remembered a very funny joke and couldn’t help myself.”
The man in the suit gestured to Lawrence, reminding him, “Mr. Lytton, this guy has some issues. No need to waste your time on him. I noticed that the Mayor and the others were looking this way.”
Lawrence, feeling annoyed, reluctantly sat back down and shot Leo an antagonistic glare.
“Let’s put this matter aside for now and talk about the Golden Gardens fire. I heard it was the largest fire in the last ten years in Langstel. My uncle was on-site, assisting with the rescue alongside the Mayor,” a bespectacled guy said with pride.
A girl quickly added, “I heard there were explosions at the scene, and many people were injured or killed.”
The man in the suit spoke again, “Logically, such a major incident should have seriously impacted our city’s image, but it still managed to be designated as an example city in the world. Do you guys know why?”
“Of course, because there was an unknown hero who risked his life to save a little girl from the burning building. This incident made headlines not only in the city but worldwide,” someone replied.
The bespectacled guy chimed in, “My uncle said the Mayor wanted to reward this hero generously, but he turned it down.”
Another guy nodded, “That’s right. The identity of this hero remains a mystery to this day. In the news, all we saw was a person in firefighting gear, so we couldn’t see his face. Rumor has it that an order was issued to prohibit the media from tracking or reporting on him. Isn’t that strange?”
As soon as the hero’s story was mentioned, Rosemary, who had been silent until now, couldn’t help but speak, “It would be great if you could find out the identity of this hero.”
The man in the suit immediately offered in a pleasing tone, “After the conference, I’ll have my father look into it. We should be able to uncover his identity.”
Rosemary’s comment made Lawrence feel somewhat uneasy. In his memory, this was the first time Rosemary had shown interest in a man, and it triggered a sense of competition.
So Lawrence said with a dismissive tone, “It’s not a big deal to rush into a fire and save a kid. Anybody could do that.”
Rosemary rolled her eyes and remarked sarcastically, “You talk big, but do you have the guts to rush into a fire and save someone?”
“Rosemary, if I ever encountered such a situation, I would definitely rush in without hesitation,” Lawrence replied confidently, puffing out his chest.
Rosemary scoffed, “Given your physique, you’d probably collapse on the third floor, let alone make it to the fire scene.”
This remark caused everyone to burst into laughter. Lawrence’s face reddened, and he couldn’t refute Rosemary’s taunts, so he sat in his chair sulking.
Regarding the fire that day, Rosemary had done some research afterward.
