“After this, you all can handle things on your own. If there are any issues, you can report them to us at any time,” the traffic officer said before having the damaged motorcycle that lay overturned at the scene towed away.
Once the traffic officer left, Jessica couldn’t be bothered to even look at the woman lying on the ground. She crossed her arms and appeared indifferent, clearly unwilling to go to the hospital with the woman.
Leo, in cooperation with the nurses, helped lift the middle-aged woman onto a stretcher and then boarded the ambulance with her.
Watching Leo leave with the ambulance, Jessica muttered angrily, “Leo, that little schemer, it seems I’ve been too kind to him lately. I’ll make him regret what he did today!”
Unlike Jessica, Martin believed that Leo hadn’t done anything wrong just now. If he had indeed left with his wife earlier, they would have faced a hit-and-run charge, and the consequences would have been unthinkable.
“How about we go to the hospital to check on things? In case Leo doesn’t have enough money to cover the medical expenses…” Martin began to suggest before Jessica interrupted him.
“Why should we go there? This is a mess he brought upon himself. Since he’s so concerned about a stranger, let him handle it. If he doesn’t care about us, why should we care about him?” Jessica, a domineering wife, rarely allowed Martin to make decisions and instead dragged him home.
Upon arriving at the hospital, the middle-aged woman named Doreen, her wounds were treated by the medical staff, X-rays were taken, and she was admitted to a hospital room. Throughout the process, Leo remained by her side, handling all the necessary payments.
Leo’s actions earned Doreen’s gratitude. When he inquired about her family, Doreen’s expression turned desolate and dim.
From her demeanor, Leo could tell that she had something difficult to express. He asked, “Ma’am, if you have any difficulties, you can tell me. I’ll do whatever I can to help.”
“Young man, it was your father who hit me with the car. You’ve already helped me a lot, and I’m grateful. I know you young people are busy, so you can go back,” Doreen said, looking at Leo.
However, Leo didn’t leave but instead looked into her eyes and said sincerely, “Until your family arrives, I can’t leave. Even though my dad was the one driving the car, I still need to take responsibility for his actions.”
Hearing this, tears welled up in Doreen’s eyes. She had thought that this young man would simply drop her off at the hospital and pay the medical bills, but he had gone above and beyond to assist her.
Doreen introduced herself and shared her current predicament. She had a six-year-old son named Ron, whose intelligence level was stuck at that of a three-year-old. Upon learning of her son’s cognitive issues, her husband had divorced her, leaving her to care for their child alone. Doreen didn’t have a steady job and made ends meet through occasional manual labor. During her hospitalization, she had lost both her income and no one to look after her child, which left her in a difficult situation.
She had initially resisted going to the hospital, but the pain in her legs forced her to lie in the hospital bed. Eventually, Doreen hesitated and confided in Leo about the difficulties she was currently facing.
Leo promised to find someone to take care of Doreen’s child. After all, it was his parents in-law who had caused this situation. While they might act heartlessly, Leo couldn’t do the same.
Exiting the hospital, Leo used the address Doreen had given him to locate a community in disarray. Most of the residents were migrant workers, and due to a lack of management, the sanitation was poor, with garbage strewn about.
After wandering through the community for a while, Leo finally found the house Doreen rented.
Outside the house, Leo encountered four kids bullying another young boy. The young boy was no match for them and had started crying.
Although he was in tears, the four kids showed no signs of stopping and instead continued to torment him while laughing in triumph.
Leo walked over and let out a low growl, “What are you doing!?”
These kids were known as the little kings of this community, spoiled and unbridled. They didn’t fear Leo’s low growl.
One of them, the ringleader, tilted his head and shouted back at Leo, “Who are you? We’re just bullying a dimwit; it’s none of your business.”
Upon hearing the word “dimwit,” Leo knew that the boy being bullied must be Ron, Doreen’s son.
The ringleader finished speaking and was about to hit Ron when Leo stepped in front of him.
Seeing the tall figure of Leo, the kids didn’t dare to approach him directly. The ringleader, however, had no intention of backing down. He raised his head and challenged Leo, “What are you going to do? If you don’t move, we’ll beat you up!”
Saying so, the ringleader signaled the other kids to create some distance between them and Leo, then they took out slingshots from their pockets.
Seeing that Leo had no intention of giving way, the ringleader distributed some small pebbles to the other kids, saying, “Let’s use slingshots against him!”
Before the ringleader could even pull back his slingshot, he suddenly felt a blur before his eyes, and his feet left the ground. Leo had grabbed the ringleader’s collar and lifted him off the ground.
“Kid, it seems like your parents haven’t taught you well. Let Uncle teach you a lesson,” Leo warned.
“Son of a bitch, let go of me!” The lead kid shouted angrily.
*Smack!*
Leo delivered a slap with his right hand, but he didn’t hit too hard, just enough to teach the little rascal a lesson.
Seeing their leader get slapped, the other kids were taken aback.
“You dare to hit me?” The lead kid wore an incredulous expression on his face. He had never been slapped like this before in his life.
You see, his father was a notorious figure in this block, so he had been the absolute king of the kids in this community.
Leo raised his right hand again, making a threatening gesture as he warned, “You little brat, if you ever bully Ron again, I’ll slap you every time I see you!”
After the warning, Leo released his grip, and the ringleader landed on the ground with a thud.
He got up, and although his eyes were filled with resentment as he glared at Leo, he threatened, “If you’ve got the guts, just wait!”
With that, the ringleader scrambled to his feet and ran off in one direction. The other kids, seeing their leader’s retreat, dispersed as well.
Leo squatted down in front of Ron and helped him up from the ground.
Ron looked at Leo with a mix of confusion and a hint of fear in his eyes.
“Don’t be scared, Ron. With me around, no one will dare to bully you anymore,” Leo reassured him.
Though Ron’s intelligence was that of a three-year-old, he understood that Leo had just helped him, so he smiled and called out, “Big brother.”
