Esmeralda
I let my gaze get lost in those oval shaped green eyes of his. Gem-stone green eyes that pierced through me as if trying to read me. At once, they darkened as I could feel his wolf wanting to take over. Those cold, strange, ruthless eyes that were fixed on me suddenly melted as they were replaced with softness and curiosity. I knew what he was thinking without him saying it.
His eyes roamed my dried, tangled strawberry coloured hair with questions on his mind. It was rare for a wolf to have strawberry coloured hair. I was grateful that he didn’t ask me how I possessed such weird hair colour because I didn’t know how. Once, my father told me that every firstborn of the Harper family possessed certain powers and the confirmation of such powers was having a strawberry coloured hair.
I froze the moment I felt his curious gaze land on my body, looking at me from head to toe, like I was on display. I quietly hugged my small frame feeling ashamed of my appearance. As if my arid hair wasn’t enough, my exposed body was marred with marks, marks I had gotten from punishment and my floral dress was too casual for the ceremony.
I looked like a mere servant while he resembled a demi-god.
He scrunched his face in a manner that showed he was not impressed with me.
Well, I was not impressed with myself either.
At once, those soft, curious eyes were gone in a flash of light as they were replaced with coldness and hatred.
Did I offend him?
I leaned closer to the canopy stand as his deadly aura blasted me, making me want to take a wrong step and fall flat on the ground. I heard him inhale sharply and exhale slowly as if he was trying to calm his nerves.
“What is your name?” He asked in a more animal than manly tone, causing shivers down my spine, making me gasp in fear as a debate sprung up in my mind. A part of me wanted to reply, to avoid whatever would make him mad at me, but as much as I would love to reply to him, I couldn’t as I was scared to death. It was like an invincible rope wired my tongue to my mouth and sealed it shut.
Seconds turned into minutes, yet, I hadn’t replied to him as I was torn between two options. My eyes widened in shock at my mate’s first words to me. While a part of me got scared, a part of me found it sexy, causing my cheeks to turn red.
Silly me!
“I asked a question that deserves an answer,” He let out an angry growl, snapping me out of my imagination. I could sense that he was an impatient person and my silence only heightened his anger.
He had asked for my name. I had two names. The one my pack referred to me asand the only my parents and Selene referred to me as.
I swallowed the lump in my throat with my gaze fixed on the floor, “Omega. The name is Omega,”
He had the right to know what my pack called me. His prolonged silence only heightened my anxiety as I regretted telling him my rank instead of my name.
“You are an Omega?” His deep baritone voice filled my ears as I could sense disgust in it. The moment he took a step away from me, I knew he was disappointed, but I kept my hope alive. He was my mate and he was the one to end my suffering.
“I am,” I replied, feeling ashamed of my rank as anxiety, fear and frustrations got the best of me, making it impossible for me to calm down. I muttered a silent prayer to the moon goddess, pleading with her to let my mate accept me.
I longed to hear his next words, the words of assurance that will let me know my stand in his life, but his prolonged silence increased my frustrations and restlessness.
I closed my eyes in anticipation, hoping to hear those comforting words but I was thrown off balance when he took a few steps further from me as his aura radiated rage.
“I, Alpha Kade Otto, reject…”
“No!” I screamed immediately, interrupting him before he could pronounce my rejection as my gaze met with his.
“Please, No,” I fell to the ground, weeping uncontrollably as I couldn’t bear the rejection.
My heart ached badly and my wobbling knees hit the cold, hard floor, but I clung to the canopy stand for support. I had been accustomed to pain all my life, and it was safe to say that pain was part of me. But this one hit differently. While other pains were caused by outer forces, focusing on one particular part of my body, trying to bend me to their will, this one radiated everywhere within me.
I had experienced greater pain and I didn’t let it get to me, but this pain might be the end of me. It shattered my heart into a thousand pieces, draining all the strength I had left.
Not even the pain from the lashes in the correction room could be compared to this one.
This pain caused by an inner force, circulated my body in a flash of light, threatening to break me.
I felt weak.
I felt hopeless.
I felt frustrated.
My mate was rejecting me!
What was my offence, Moon goddess? Why does my life have to be a recurring tale of sadness?
Was there ever going to be happiness? Even if it was for a day?
Happiness!
I laughed at that word. The last time I experienced happiness was when my parents were alive. Thanks to my half-sister who brutally murdered them, wiping all the traces of happiness from my life, sentencing me to eternal sadness.
I felt like the ground should swallow me as I was already tired of my life. Even if he hadn’t completed the rejection, the thought that he had it in mind to reject me shattered me into a thousand pieces.
“Please don’t reject me,” I pleaded shamelessly as I held his boot tightly with my teary eyes on his hardened face. I watched his hardened ice-cold face turn soft the moment his gaze landed on mine.
