Ridian’s POV
“Why did you leave me?” I asked.
Jane was quiet for a while. I resisted the urge to ask again, and chose to stay silent and wait. Her constant sobbing was beginning to annoy me, but I decided to stay patient. I couldn’t leave without getting the information I wanted. When it became too much, I was forced to speak.
“Okay, Jane. Please stop it. You and I both know that we need to talk. I cannot wait any longer. I need to know why you decided to abandon me on our wedding day.”
“No, I did not abandon you,” she broke down into fresh sobs. “I was taken away from you. I swear, I did not chose to leave. Why would I leave you when you’re the only man I love?”
I sat up straight and faced her. Every inch of me wanted to believe what she was saying. “Look at me, Jane. Tell me what happened when you ‘re looking at me.”
“You don’t believe me, do you? I knew it. How could you think the worst of me, Ridian? You and I were together for a very long time and you know me very well. i made the decision to marry you. Why would I leave on our wedding day?”
“That’s what I want to know, Jane. What happened on that day? Tell me the whole story.”
Not knowing the truth had torn me apart for a very long time. Now that she was back, I needed to get information on everything that happened that day.
“It was Mark who organized the kidnap. I remember every detail of that fateful morning. I had just woken up and was about to call for my personal maid when the door opened and someone walked in, and switched on the light before I could scream.
I was relieved when I saw it was Mark who had become my friend. I asked him what he wanted and he smiled before greeting me. I told him we couldn’t talk at that time but he said he had something urgent to tell me. I believed him, and i have regretted that every day. I sat up on bed and waited for him to talk to me.”
I imagined Jane sitting up while wearing one of her white translucent nighties and felt angry. How could she sit up while wearing so little in front of another man? Jane saw my fingers balling into fists.
“I was wearing a sweater on top of my nightdress,” she continued. “It was very cold that morning. I’m sorry darling I know I should never have entertained his visit. I should have sent him out of my bedroom the moment he stepped in.”
“What’s done is done,” I said. “What happened next?”
“He came and sat on the bed.”
I stood up. “How could you let another man sit on your bed at night when we were about to get married? I don’t believe your story that you were just friends? It’s very clear to me that there was more than that between you two or he would not have got the guts to come that close to you.”
“Why did you ask me to tell you everything when you’re not gonna believe me anyway?” Jane asked. “I was kidnapped, but all you can do is question me. I told you I regret everything.”
“What exactly do you regret, Jane willow? Running off with that good for nothing idiot?”
Instead of retorting back, Jane decided to burst into tears. “What do I need to do to make you believe me, my love? I made some mistakes but believe me, I was kidnapped by that bastard.”
I sighed. Questioning her was not going to get me the answers. I decided it was best to listen to her side of the story until it was complete before making my conclusions. So far, I was finding it very hard to believe the sweetest woman I had ever met which was crazy.
“I’m sorry, Jane. I got taken up by my emotions but I’m ready to listen now.”
“Okay. So he sat on my bed. He put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a white handkerchief which he placed over my face. I fought with all the strength I had but because of the element of surprise, he won and I lost consciousness. I woke up some hours later in a city full of humans.
You can imagine the anguish I felt when I realized that I was no longer at home with you. What was supposed to be the most special day of my life turned into a nightmare. Darling, I missed you so much. I thought of you every day I was held by that horrible man. A day never went by without me thinking of escaping and the moment I was able to do, I came straight to you, my love. It hurts me so much that you do not believe me. I have thought of this moment thousands of times and I never imagined it ending like this.”
I shifted closer to her and pulled her into my arms. I couldn’t resist the urge to have her close anymore. Jane continued to cry even though she was safe in my arms. It was hard to doubt her anymore.
Jane had always been honest, and could never lie without outing herself. No, she could not have turned into a good actress overnight. She had to be telling the truth.
“Oh you poor dear,” I said. “You went through so much and we were all thinking you had chosen to leave. I’m sorry for doubting you, and for not looking for you. I missed you so much, Jane. I can’t believe that you’re back, but I’m very happy.”
“I’m so glad that you finally believe me. I have never loved anyone the way I love you. You are the only man I want, Ridian. You are so sweet. I wish this moment could last forever.”
I was feeling very happy, until a picture of Cilla Markle flashed in my mind. Sh1t! what was I going to do about her and the mate bond that I had already accepted? How was I going to explain to Jane that I had met my mate before our wedding day but did not reveal?
It was then I realized that my life was fxcked.
