Jace
I have been checking through my old stuff looking for any remaining artwork that I forgot to throw away. I only find two paintings which I keep in the drawer of my dresser. I hope Amy will like them. I had no idea she had any kind of interest in art. Amy never seizes to amaze me. She even got me thinking about doing art again!
It is almost three o’clock when my wolf starts getting restless. Something has awoken him from his sleep.
“Calm down buddy,” I try to soothe him but it only makes him worse. I try to ignore the feeling and head down stairs.
Sophia has gone in town to get some groceries. Jose and Jordan have gone out somewhere. The house is very quiet when I reach down stairs. There is usually some noise or something clicking in the kitchen.
Events of last weekend come unfiltered in my mind reminding me of my beautiful woman and the way she interacted with my family. My wolf kicks in pain and I yelp with the sudden infliction of pain and discomfort that fills my body.
“What is wrong with you?” I shout at my wolf which neither stops not calms.
Our mate!
Amy!
She is not safe!
My wolf keeps communicating to me. He has been silent for a while. It must be serious that which is bothering him. I grab my phone and send Amy a text.
Me: Hi. I just want to check on you.
I keep staring at the phone in hope of getting her usual quick reply. I later give up and place the phone down. What is wrong with Amy? She is usually quick to respond. I get to the phone and send another text.
Me: Are you okay? Am just worried you aren’t replying back to my text.
I wait impatiently for her response which doesn’t come soon enough. I can feel my heart pounding in my ears at the thought that Amy must be in trouble. My wolf must be quick to sense his mate is in danger because he keeps trying to come out.
“Calm down! Let’s figure this out in a sensible way,” I urge him but he doesn’t calm.
I dail Amy’s number and call her. Her phone rings and rings but she does not answer. I dail it again and it keeps ringing.
Damn it, Amy! Pick up the damn phone!
I am fuming with anger. Not because I am angry at Amy. I know she wouldn’t ignore my call or text. I know she isn’t mad at me because I haven’t been so cynical lately. I have tried very hard not to be a jerk. I am mad at whoever would dare to land a finger on my mate.
I grab my car keeps and dash out of the house. I drive to Amy’s apartment trying to keep my calm and driving at a reasonable speed so that I don’t cause a damn accident because the last I want to get in my way. I keep calling Amy but all the calls go to her voicemail.
I park the car infront of Amy’s apartment complex and jump out like a mad man. The elevator takes hours reaching the floor of her place and I nearly run mad thinking about very many things that could have happened to Amy in the meantime.
I knock heavily on the door and it flies open. There is no damn way Amy would ever leave her door open. Something is not right. Hell! Everything is not right.
Her laptop is open on the desk in the corner of the living room. She must be around here somewhere.
“Amy!” I call out dashing into the kitchen but she is no where to be seen.
“Amy!’ I shout out while climbing up the stairs taking two at a time, but there is still no answer. I burst into her bedroom praying that at least she will be there to scold me for entering her room without Knocking, but she is nowhere to be seen. The room is very neatly organised and the bed is very well made and inviting. That is one of her very impressing characters that always makes me fall in love with her over and over again. A brief memory of me teasing her about making my bed yesterday morning runs in mind. I had just got her. I had just started enjoying the thrill of having the love of my life.
Oh, Amy baby please don’t do this to me, I plead in my head as I open the door to her bathroom and do a quick search. She isn’t there. She isn’t anywhere in this house. I go back down stairs and check every corner of the house. I know she is a too grown a woman to be hiding in corners but there is no time for making assumptions.
I try calling her again and I hear her phone ringing in the living room. I rush to where the sound is coming from. It is coming from the desk in the corner of the living room. She must have left her phone behind. Her laptop is on and the manuscript she was working on is still on the screen. Where on earth did she go that was so urgent that she had to leave her laptop on?
I check her phone and it has fifteen missed calls from me and the texts I sent her. She hadn’t read them yet. She must have left earlier than I sent them. I check around the desk because it is the only place I haven’t checked. Maybe it could give me a clue about her whereabouts.
There is a small note on the back of her laptop. My face breaks into a cold sweat as I read it.
Hey, Jace.
I knew you would eventually come here. I have your girlfriend, or should I say your mate. I can’t believe you left her unprotected. Anyway, come and get her. I won’t promise that I won’t touch her. The clock is ticking, so delay if you must.
PS: Come alone if you don’t want to carry a dead body with you back home.
Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!
Dwayne has got Amy. This is a fucking disaster. I ran my hands through my hair in frustration and tug at the roots like a madman. This can’t be happening. I know Amy needed to move in with me. She should have started living with me a long time ago. I would have protected her, but now, I didn’t even see Dwayne coming. I would have stopped him. Poor Amy. She must be so scared right now. She will be even more horrified when she knows the whole truth about me.
Fuck this! Amy will be so mad at me. She will probably hate me. I never thought about this. She shouldn’t know the truth from anyone else. She is supposed to learn the truth from me, and I wasn’t planning to tell her any time soon.
I race to my car and drive off back home. I burst into the house and find Jose and Jordan standing in the living room.
“What is the problem, Jace? You don’t look fine,” Jose says noticing my facial expression when I reach them.
“Dwayne has got Amy,” I reply closing my eyes realizing the bitter truth that this is really happening.
“What?” Jose and Jordan both say at the same time with utter shock visible on their faces.
“Are you sure?” Jordan inquires from me.
“Yeah, he left this note in her apartment,” I say while showing them the note.
“What the fuck!” Jose curses under his breath.
“He asked you to go alone. Is he out of his mind?” Jordan says while rereading the note.
“I know he did this to get back to me. He kidnapped Amy because he knows that I will eventually look for her and fall into his trap,” I say. I can’t believe he is using Amy to fight against me. She is innocent. She knows nothing about our past and what happened between us. I would never forgive myself if anything bad happened to her because of me.
“This is all my fault. Amy shouldn’t have been dragged into this mess,” I say. A heavy thud of something falling makes all of us turn to look at the door immediately.
“What happened to Amy?” a shocked Sophia inquires from the door way. The grocery bags are on the floor on either sides of her.
“Dwayne kidnapped Amy,” Jose replies her and her eyes go wide with shock.
“He did?” she examines our faces for conviction.
“Yes. He left this note in her apartment,” Jose responds while handing her the note. She receives it with shaking hands and reads through.
“Oh, my God! He really took her. How dare he? Amy is innocent. She has nothing to do with all of this,” she says while shaking her head frantically.
“I know, but we all have to come down and think of a sensible plan. We can’t just jump into action, because we definitely have no time for regretting and correcting mistakes,” Jose says. He’s right. My wolf, however, just feels like bursting out and running off to the Redclaw pack residence and fight for his mate.
“We should get everyone together and inform them,” Sophia says.
“Yes, I will go and inform the others,” Jordan says and Jose gives him a slight nod. He sprints out of the house with out wasting any second. This is happening. I can’t believe this moment I have dreaded all my life is finally happening. This is the game that Dwayne was playing at when he kept poking us. He wanted to hurt me using my life’s most precious possession.
“Don’t worry, Jace. I believe we are going to get her,” Jose tries to soothe me. I wish it was so easy for me to believe that. My whole world is standing on its head now. I can’t live without out Amy. I can’t live without my mate. At least I will die trying.
